AP Decision Notes: What to expect in Alabama on Election Day

    [ad_1]

WASHINGTON (AP) — Alabama voters head to the polls on Nov. 5 with a newly drawn congressional district and a long history of Republican dominance in the state on the line.

The Democratic candidate for president hasn’t carried Alabama since Jimmy Carter in 1976. Since then, the state has become reliably red. Both U.S. senators, six of the state’s seven members of the U.S. House and the governor are Republicans. Former President Donald Trump won the state by 28 percentage points in 2016 and 26 points four years later.

Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and three independent candidates round out the field on the presidential ballot. Alabama has nine electoral votes.

Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District was redrawn this year after the Supreme Court ruled that the state had illegally diluted the influence of Black voters. The district stretches across the lower third of the state and includes the cities of Mobile and Montgomery. Democrat Shomari Figures and Republican Caroleene Dobson are both seeking the open seat. Its voting-age population is 49% Black, up from 30% from when the district was reliably Republican.

The current representative, Barry Moore, opted to run in the neighboring 1st District where he beat incumbent Jerry Carl in the primary. The other five incumbent representatives are running for reelection in their current seats.

Neither senator nor the governor is on the ballot this year, and the state’s lone ballot measure would affect only Franklin County.

Alabama doesn’t offer early in-person voting. It also is one of the few states that still requires an excuse to vote by mail. As a result, nearly all Alabama voters cast their ballots in person on Election Day. In recent elections, the state has reported more than 80% of its votes between poll close and midnight on Election Day.

Here’s a look at what to expect in the 2024 election in Alabama:

    Election Day

    Nov. 5.

    Poll closing time

8 p.m. ET (portions of some counties that operate in Eastern Time have the option to close at 7 p.m. Eastern).

    Presidential electoral votes

    9 awarded to statewide winner.

    Key race and candidates

President: Harris (D) vs. Trump (R) vs. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (Independent) vs. Jill Stein (Independent) vs. Chase Oliver (Independent).

    Other races of interest

U.S. House, state Supreme Court, Civil Appeals, Criminal Appeals, Public Service Commission, state Board of Education and a ballot measure.

    Past presidential results

    2020: Trump (R) 62%, Biden (D) 37%, AP race call: Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020, 8 p.m. ET.

    Voter registration and turnout

Registered voters: 3,776,498 (as of September 2024).

Voter turnout in 2020 presidential election: 62% of registered voters.

    Pre-Election Day voting

Votes cast before Election Day 2020: about 13% of the total vote.

Votes cast before Election Day 2022: about 3% of the total vote.

Votes cast before Election Day 2024: See AP Advance Vote tracker.

    How long does vote-counting take?

    First votes reported, Nov. 3, 2020: 8:11 p.m. ET.

By midnight ET: about 84% of total votes cast were reported.

4 killed, 18 injured in mass shooting at popular Birmingham, Alabama neighborhood

    [ad_1]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Four people were killed and more than a dozen were injured in a shooting in Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday night.

Police said officers responded to reports of a major shooting. “Officers are on the scene of multiple people shot with possibly multiple casualties,” the Birmingham Police Department wrote in a post to X.

The shooting occurred in the Five Points South area of the city, the post added.

ABC News Birmingham affiliate WBMA reported that at least four people were killed and dozens injured in the shooting. At least four of the injured have life-threatening injuries, WBMA said.

As of 6 a.m. CST on Sunday, officials say 18 others were also hurt during the shooting. Their injuries range from non-life-threatening to life-threatening.

WBMA said the shooting occurred around 11 p.m. Saturday night in the busy Five Points South area.

Three of the four victims died on the scene, WBMA said. The fourth victim died at the hospital.

Investigators said they made no arrests and believe there were multiple shooters who fired upon a large group of people who were outside in a public area in the 2000 Block of Magnolia Avenue South.

Police are investigating whether a gun fitted with a so-called “switch” — which allows a semi-automatic weapon to fire at a faster rate — was used in the shooting, WBMA said.

The Birmingham Police Department has requested FBI and ATF assistance with the investigation, WBMA reported. Authorities are also seeking information from witnesses as they work to determine who were the intended targets of the shooting.

“There is no greater resource than the public,” Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald said. “We will do everything we possibly can to make sure we uncover, identify and hunt down whoever is responsible for preying on our people this morning.”

This is a developing story. This article will continue to be updated as more information becomes available.

BREAKING NEWS IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW, AND IT IS 201 ON A SUNDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 22ND. I’M JARVIS ROBERTSON HERE WITH GLADYS BAUTISTA. WE CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THAT BREAKING NEWS A MASS SHOOTING IN SOUTH SIDE OF FIVE POINT SOUTH. AND WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR IS THAT FOUR PEOPLE ARE DEAD. FOUR PEOPLE ARE CRITICALLY INJURED. AND DOZENS OF OTHERS ALSO INJURED. WHEN POLICE SAY MULTIPLE SHOOTERS OPENED FIRE ON A CROWD STANDING OUTSIDE IT ALL HAPPENED ON MAGNOLIA AVENUE. NOW, POLICE SAY THAT THERE ARE SEVERAL VICTIMS IN THIS SITUATION. AS WE KNOW, DOZENS ARE INJURED. SOME HAVE LIFE THREATENING INJURIES, SOME HAVE VARIOUS INJURIES. WE DO WANT TO GET OUT TO WVTM. 13 S ZOE BLAIR. SHE IS ON THE GROUND FOR US RIGHT NOW FOLLOWING THE LATEST GLADYS. I’M SORRY ZOE. TELL US WHAT YOU ARE SEEING AROUND YOU NOW. THANK YOU FOR. YEAH. JARVIS GLADYS. YOU CAN SEE HERE BEHIND ME. BIRMINGHAM. POLICE ARE STILL INVESTIGATING THIS MASS SHOOTING. IT HAPPENED JUST AFTER 11:00 LAST NIGHT. I’M TOLD THAT IT HAPPENED BACK THAT WAY. ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FOUNTAIN. SOMEBODY OPENED FIRE ON THE SIDEWALK. WE BIRMINGHAM. POLICE TOLD US THAT DOZENS OF PEOPLE GOT GUNSHOT INJURIES FROM THIS. EIGHT PEOPLE WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL. FOUR PEOPLE ARE DEAD. THERE ARE STILL TONS OF PEOPLE OUT HERE LOOKING FOR THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS AND TRYING. SOME OF THEM ARE JUST TRYING TO GET BACK TO THEIR CARS TO GET HOME. MANY OF THEM ARE STILL LOOKING FOR ANSWERS ON WHAT HAPPENED. BIRMINGHAM POLICE SAY THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE ANYONE IN CUSTODY RIGHT NOW, BUT THEY’RE STILL WORKING TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED. BACK TO YOU GUYS. ALL RIGHT, ZOE, THANK YOU SO MUCH. AND FROM WHAT YOU CAN SEE FROM THAT SCENE, IT LOOKS LIKE THERE IS POLICE TAPE ALL OVER THE PLACE. POLICE HAVE SAID THAT DOZENS OF THE VICTIMS ARE AT VARIOUS HOSPITALS. SO RIGHT NOW, IT JUST SEEMS LIKE THIS IS A REALLY FLUID SITUATION, A VERY FLUID SITUATION. AND KEEP IN MIND, THIS HAPPENED ON A SATURDAY NIGHT WHEN THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE OUT IN FIVE POINTS SOUTH. AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THAT CRIME SCENE TAPE THAT WE JUST SAW AROUND ZOE, POLICE ARE GOING TO BE THERE FOR SOME TIME. AGAIN, THEY SAY THAT A GROUP OF PEOPLE STARTED FIRING AT PEOPLE WHO WERE STANDING OUT IN THE OPEN, AND SOMETHING INTERESTING THAT POLICE SAID. THEY SAID THAT THEY COULD NOT SAY HOW MANY SHOTS WERE FIRED, BUT THEY DO BELIEVE THAT GLOCK SWITCHES WERE USED. AND WE KNOW THAT THAT HAS BEEN A MAJOR ISSUE FOR THE BIRMINGHAM POLICE DEPARTMENT, FOR FEDERAL PARTNERS AS WELL, DEALING WITH THE REGULATION OF THESE GLOCK SWITCHES. WE ALSO HEARD FROM POLICE CHIEFS LAST WEEK EVEN SAYING THAT THEY’RE WORKING RIGHT NOW AT THE STATE LEVEL TO MAKE THOSE GLOCK SWITCHES THEY BELIEVE WERE USED IN TONIGHT’S SHOOTING ILLEGAL AT THE STATE LEVEL, BECAUSE RIGHT NOW THEY’RE ONLY ILLEGAL AT THE FEDERAL LEVEL. AND FOR SOME TIME THAT BIRMINGHAM CITY LEADERS, THEY HAVE BEEN WORKING TO GET THESE GLOCK SWITCHES OFF THE STREET. BIRMINGHAM BIRMINGHAM MAYOR RANDALL WOODFIN, HE HAS BEEN VERY VOCAL EVEN NOT TOO LONG AGO WITHIN THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS, POSTING ON SOCIAL MEDIA SAYING THAT WE ARE COMING AFTER THE PEOPLE WHO USE GLOCK. GLOCK SWITCHES. NOW KEEP IN MIND, ONCE HE MADE THAT POST, THERE WERE SOME PEOPLE WHO DECIDED TO THINK IT WAS A JOKE. THEY POSTED GLOCK SWITCHES, POSTED THEM SHOOTING GLOCK SWITCHES AND GUESS WHAT? HE POSTED THAT POLICE, FEDERAL PARTNERS THEY WENT AFTER THOSE PEOPLE. WE DID HAVE A CHANCE TO HEAR FROM SOME PEOPLE WHO WERE ON THE GROUND OUT THERE THAT NIGHT THAT WALKED UP SHORTLY AFTER THE INCIDENT HAPPENED. TAKE A LISTEN. VERY SCARY, VERY LIKE WHEN I ASKED, I WALKED UP WHEN IT WAS LIKE JUST ENDED BECAUSE EVERYBODY WAS SCREAMING. IT WAS PEOPLE CRYING. POLICE OFFICERS. THEY WAS TRYING TO GET INFORMATION FROM DIFFERENT PEOPLE. SO THEY JUST WAS TRYING TO DO THEIR JOB. AND I GUESS GET THE AID AND INFORMATION THAT THEY NEED. YOU SAID YOU SAW SOME PEOPLE CARRIED OUT ON STRETCHERS. YES, MA’AM. IT WAS LITERALLY PROBABLY ABOUT 6 TO 7 PEOPLE, MALES AND FEMALES. THAT WAS COMING OUT ON STRETCHERS. AND IT WAS AMBULANCE COMING BACK TO BACK. SO IT WAS DEFINITELY A BAD CRIME SCENE FOR THE FIVE POINTS AREA. YOU DON’T SEE STUFF LIKE THIS JUST YOU GOING OUT TO HAVE A GOOD TIME AND YOU WALK UP ON SOMETHING LIKE THIS. SO IT’S JUST IT’S VERY RARE THAT YOU SEE SOMETHING LIKE THIS VERY CLOSE TO HOME, YOU KNOW, SO JUST KIND OF SAD FOR, YOU KNOW, THE PUBLIC AND THE FAMILY MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF THE PEOPLE THAT GOT WOUNDED. YEAH. AND SO DOES THIS MAKE YOU RETHINK YOU WANTING TO GO OUT DOWN HERE OR ANYTHING? YES, MA’AM. DEFINITELY. IT’S A GUY WALKED BY AND HE SAID, THIS IS THE MAIN REASON WHY I STAY AT HOME. YOU KNOW, AND I KNOW THINGS CAN HAPPEN NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO, BUT YOU JUST HAVE TO, YOU KNOW, BE MINDFUL OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS AND, YOU KNOW, USE YOUR BEST JUDGMENT. AND LIKE I SAID, I WAS GOING TO COME OUT EARLIER, BUT I DIDN’T. I KIND OF LAGGED AROUND AND IT WAS A REASON. SO EVERYTHING HAPPENED FOR A REASON. YOU JUST HAVE TO KNOW WHEN IT’S IT’S TIME TO GO OR IT’S TIME TO GO TO ANOTHER LOCATION BECAUSE THIS AREA HERE LATELY, THE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKENDS, IT’S BEEN GETTING BAD. IT’S BEEN GETTING BAD. WOW. CAN’T EVEN IMAGINE WHAT THAT MUST HAVE BEEN LIKE. SO HAPPY THAT THAT GENTLEMAN THAT SHE SPOKE TO IS OKAY. BUT WE KNOW THAT THAT’S NOT THE SITUATION FOR SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE. AND HE TALKED ABOUT PEOPLE GETTING CARRIED OUT ON STRETCHERS ON MY WAY IN HERE. I PASSED THROUGH THAT AREA. POLICE SAY THAT THE AREA THAT I CAME DOWN, WHICH WAS UNIVERSITY BOULEVARD, HE SAID THAT THIS AREA RIGHT NOW, WE HAD TO ESTABLISH A PERIMETER SO THAT THE MEDICAL VEHICLES, THE AMBULANCES COULD GET OUT AND HAVE A PATHWAY OUT OF THAT. THAT IS, YOU KNOW, JUST TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF HOW POPULATED THIS AREA WAS WHEN ALL OF THIS HAPPENED. YEAH, WE KNOW THAT AGAIN, A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE OUT ON THE WEEKENDS AND FIVE POINTS OUT IN BIRMINGHAM. YES. AGAIN, WE DO WANT TO REITERATE THAT THIS HAPPENED JUST AFTER 11:00 LAST NIGHT. BIRMINGHAM POLICE SAY THAT SEVERAL SHOOTERS OPENED FIRE ON A CROWD OF PEOPLE. WE KNOW THAT UNFORTUNATELY, FOUR PEOPLE ARE DEAD, FOUR PEOPLE HAVE LIFE THREATENING INJURIES, BUT DOZENS OF PEOPLE HAVE VARIOUS INJURIES. MULTIPLE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL RIGHT NOW, MULTIPLE FIRST RESPONDERS STILL BEING DISPATCHED TO THAT SCENE, TRYING TO JUST GET EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL. NOW, THE MOTIVE FOR THE SHOOTING IS STILL UNCLEAR AT THIS MOMENT, AND THAT IS THE ONE THING THAT PEOPLE WILL BE LOOKING FOR, RIGHT? AND THEN WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THIS ENTIRE AREA THAT POLICE NOW HAVE TO SIFT THROUGH TO TRY TO FIND THEIR EVIDENCE WHEN THEY’RE TALKING ABOUT GLOCK SWITCHES, YOU’RE TALKING, YOU KNOW, WE DON’T EVEN KNOW THE NUMBER OF SHOTS THAT WERE FIRED, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT A SWITCH ON A GUN LIKE THAT FROM MULTIPLE SHOOTERS. SO POLICE HAVE A LOT. THEY’RE GOING TO HAVE A LOT TO DEAL WITH. AND WHAT’S INTERESTING, YEAH, WHAT’S INTERESTING ABOUT IT WITH THOSE GLOCK SWITCHES, ONCE THEY INSTALL THEM ON A TYPICAL HANDGUN. RIGHT. I MEAN, IT CAN FIRE RAPID SUCCESSION FOR HUNDREDS OF BULLETS. SO I MEAN, BIRMINGHAM OFFICIALS, AFTER TONIGHT, THEY’RE DEFINITELY GOING TO BE PUSHING EVEN HARDER TO GET THESE OFF THE STREETS. RIGHT. AND WE HEARD FROM POLICE, THEY SAID THAT RIGHT NOW THEY WANT TO FIND THOSE SHOOTERS AND THEY’RE GOING TO HUNT THEM DOWN AND MAKE SURE THEY ARE BROUGHT TO JUSTICE. AND REALLY QUICKLY. I DO WANT TO REITERATE WHAT THE GENTLEMAN SAID, THAT IT’S SAD. I MEAN, JUST LOOKING ACROSS FACEBOOK RIGHT NOW, THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE POSTING THIS IS SAD. BIRMINGHAM WE HAVE TO DO BETTER. SO THIS IS A COMMUNITY THAT IS HURTING BY GUN VIOLENCE. DEFINITELY. UNFORTUNATELY, AND RIGHT NOW WE DON’T KNOW HOW IT’S GOING TO END. AND WE DON’T EVEN KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN AFFECTED. WE WILL CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THIS DEVELOPING STORY FOR YOU. WE HAVE CREWS ON THE GROUND THERE AT THAT SCENE. WE’RE GOING TO BE UPDATING THIS THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT.

All nature is good, but some nature is just a little more fun. That’s the case in coastal Alabama, where landscapes collide and sandy beaches meet freshwater lakes meet pine-oak woods meet the mighty Gulf of Mexico. That diversity means you can enjoy outdoor activities of all kinds within the span of just a few miles. Hiking and biking trails wind through an astounding variety of ecosystems. You can also enjoy canoeing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and foilboarding—and that’s just above water. A vast artificial reef system off the Alabama coast provides habitat for a highlight reel of gulf life and amazing snorkeling and diving. Try packing all this into one weekend and get your fill of nature, guaranteed.

    Paddling

At Alabama’s Beaches, the kayaking and paddleboarding options are so rich and varied they have their own trail network: the Coastal Alabama Back Bay Blueway. Stretching 30 miles from Fort Morgan in the west to Orange Beach in the east, the system encompasses four distinct trails and 21 launch sites. Fort Morgan Trail on the western end dips into Mobile Bay, where you can paddle past a Civil War–era fort and Bon Secour Bay. Little Lagoon Trail, which covers ten miles and has three launches, is known for great kayak fishing and a sandy bottom.

    Snorkeling

Just head out a few hundred feet into the Gulf to reach the Orange Beach Snorkeling Reefs, three artificial (a.k.a. circalittoral) reefs constructed to make homes for marine creatures like red drum, grouper, crabs, and sheepshead. The reefs average just eight feet deep and can be reached from Romar Beach, Alabama Point, and the Gulf State Park Pavilion. This easy-access site is great for snorkelers of all levels.

    Dolphin Cruising

No other wildlife sighting thrills quite like spotting dolphins playing in the bright-blue waters off the coast of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Booking a dolphin cruise from one of the many tour operators in either town is the best way to get a good look at these amazing creatures. Options range from sailboats and catboats to tour boats and glass-bottomed vessels.

    Fishing

The fish are always biting on Alabama’s Beaches, whether you’re casting right into the surf or heading miles offshore. The newly renovated Gulf State Park Pier is a favorite spot for onshore angling. Locals and travelers alike come here to try their luck catching Spanish mackerel, flounder, Florida pompano, and more. Plus, the logistics are easy: you can buy a fishing license, rent a rod and reel, and buy bait all on-site.

    Wildlife

On the western side of Gulf Shores, Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge provides a quiet sanctuary for rare and threatened creatures. The refuge protects neotropical songbirds as they migrate through the area in spring and fall, provides crucial habitat for the endangered Alabama beach mouse, and hosts nesting loggerhead, green, and Kemp’s ridley sea turtles. A network of hiker-only trails weaves through Bon Secour’s diverse ecosystems, including sand dunes, marshes, and maritime forests. Highlights include the Jeff Friend Trail, a one-miler that loops through the coastal woods; Gator Lake Trail, a two-mile dune ridge-walk to a peaceful lake; and Pine Beach Trail, a four-mile out-and-back that connects a saltwater lagoon and a freshwater lake.

    Camping

Looking to really get away from it all? Gulf State Park’s Outpost Campsites require a 1.5-mile hike or bike ride to access. But the effort is rewarded with a unique campground that comes with shelter and beds, so you don’t need to pack a tent or sleeping pads. The park provides three military-style canvas platform tents that each come with four cots, a shaded porch, and beach chairs. Guests share on-site bathrooms with showers. There’s water but no electricity, ensuring dark skies and great stargazing.

  • Make Better Memories

    Make Better Memories

    [ad_1]

    </div></div>”],”filter”:{“nextExceptions”:”img, blockquote, div”,”nextContainsExceptions”:”img, blockquote, a.btn, a.o-button”},”renderIntial”:true,”wordCount”:350}”>

You could say that making memories is our highest purpose. The experiences we remember fondly (or not) become part of who we are. So you can’t aim high enough when it comes to making good memories.

That’s why we go on vacation. Traveling with family and friends, seeking out new places and activities, breaks us out of the day-to-day rut we all fall into. You probably know that’s true—just think about how hard it is to remember details from a routine workweek last year compared to recalling last year’s big adventures.

Researchers have actually begun to study this phenomenon, and it turns out that your brain likes experiencing the unexpected. Unexpected events trigger the nucleus accumbens—the brain’s pleasure center, delivering a shot of feel-good dopamine. That would be good enough on its own, but it gets better: a recent study by MIT scientists suggests that the element of surprise also improves memory. So feel good and remember it better—win-win.

Which is why Alabama’s Beaches should be at the top of your list for vacation planning. If you’ve never been there, prepare to be surprised and amazed by the sugar-sand beaches, aquamarine waters, leaping dolphins, and gorgeous sunsets. It’s a coastal paradise, with 32 miles of white quartz sand on the Gulf of Mexico, split between the adjacent towns of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Here are three spots where the unexpected is on the itinerary.

    Beach

Get two beaches in one at Little Lagoon Pass Park, which sits right on the pass where Little Lagoon empties into the Gulf of Mexico. This means you can lounge on the white sands of the Gulf or along the placid waters of the lagoon—a great choice for families. There’s a fishing pier on the lagoon side if you want to cast a line for flounder or speckled trout, plus convenient parking, bathrooms, and showers.

    Underwater

Discover a whole new world under the waves. In 1920, the Whiskey, a 200-foot Spanish rum runner, sank just off the Gulf Shores coast. Today, the Whiskey Wreck is a stellar spot for snorkelers and beginner divers. It’s a shore dive, just 150 yards off the beach (and Bahama Bob’s Beach Side Cafe), and because the ship sank in about 20 feet of water, it’s easy to see the wreck and its marine life.

    Food and Drink

Not only can you order seafood boils and lobster rolls at Zeke’s Restaurant, an iconic Orange Beach establishment, but the chef will also cook up your catch of the day. And since Zeke’s also operates a marina and fishing charters, it’s a full-service operation, from casting to cleaning to cooking. Nothing will surprise you like hooking a snapper and amaze you like eating it that night.

Dine and drink by the water.

    Above the Water

The coastal conditions here have made Gulf Shores and Orange Beach a hotbed for foilboarding, where you “surf” on top of the water. Foilboards (also called hydrofoils) have a fin or foil that lifts the board out of the water, so you’re cruising above the surface. It’s as wild as it sounds. Beginning foilboarders should head for the back bays of Orange Beach, while more experienced riders can surf the Gulf waters. Rentals and lessons are available from Foil Gulf Coast.

    [ad_1]

ATHENS, Ala. (AP) — Country singer Keith Urban gave just a few hours’ notice before performing a free concert Friday night in the parking lot of a large convenience store and gas station in north Alabama.

About 5,500 people turned out for the show in Athens, about 100 miles (161 kilometers) south of Nashville, said Athens Police Department Capt. Brett Constable. The concert was outside a Buc-ee’s, a chain of roadside stores known for barbecue.

“I came down to this Buc-ee’s about a month ago. And when I left, I went, ‘It’d be kind of fun to do a show there,’” Urban told the crowd during the concert, according to an Instagram video posted by WAFF-TV in Huntsville, Alabama.

Urban said his “cave man brain” told him it would be fun to set up a little stage for a small audience.

“I swear to you, I thought maybe 100, 200 people,” Urban said as a video showed a larger crowd.

People started gathering hours before the show, news outlets reported.

“I was at work and we heard it on the radio that there was going to be a surprise concert at Buc-ee’s in Athens,” Cindy Wilson told FOX 54 WZDX-TV in Huntsville. “And I was like, ’Oh my God, it’s on my way home.’ And it’s 15 minutes from my house. So I couldn’t believe it.”

While he was at the store, Urban also worked behind a food counter. A video showed him wearing a Buc-ee’s T-shirt and apron as he poured barbecue sauce on some brisket and chopped the meat into smaller pieces.

Former Alabama police sergeant pleads guilty to excessive force charge

    [ad_1]

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A former Alabama police sergeant has pleaded guilty to beating a man in a jail cell.

Federal court records show that Ryan Phillips, a former sergeant with the Daleville Police Department, pleaded guilty Thursday to a charge of depriving an arrestee of his civil rights under color of law. The assault happened on March 1, 2022 at the Daleville Police Department, according to court records.

In the plea agreement, Phillips acknowledged that after an argument he entered a cell and struck the man “multiple times about the chest, back, and face.” The man was alone in the cell and was not a danger to himself or others, according to the plea agreement.

The man, called only by his initials in the court filing, suffered bruising and cuts to his scalp, face, neck, back, and chest.

Phillips will be sentenced on Nov. 13. Prosecutors said they are recommending a sentence of 22 months in prison.

“The defendant lost his composure and beat an arrestee inside his cell. This type of excessive force cannot be tolerated. By holding accountable those who disparage the profession by breaking the law, we will protect the reputations of the countless officers who serve honorably,” U.S. Attorney Jonathan S. Ross said in a statement.

A defense attorney for Phillips did not immediately return an email seeking comment.

Vote sets stage for new Amtrak Gulf Coast service. But can trains roll by Super Bowl?

    [ad_1]

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — A 6-0 vote Tuesday by the City Council in Mobile, Alabama, has set the stage for Amtrak passenger trains to roll from New Orleans to Mobile next year.

The Sun Herald reports that the Mobile council voted to fund the passenger train service for three years. The funding had already been approved in Mississippi and Louisiana. Amtrak’s projected start date for the service is spring of 2025. It is uncertain whether it can begin before the Super Bowl is played in New Orleans on Feb. 9.

“I think everybody wants to get this running by the Super Bowl,” said Knox Ross, chairman of the Southern Rail Commission, the interstate organization promoting rail transportation. “But they can’t guarantee it.”

Platforms are ready in New Orleans and in the Mississippi cities of Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi and Pascagoula. But a platform still has to be built in Mobile.

Ross said a schedule and fares will be posted on the Amtrak.com website about 90 days before service begins. The current plan calls for two trains a day running from New Orleans to Mobile and two a day heading from Mobile to New Orleans — with brief stops at the cities in between for passengers to get on and off.

  • An Online Rant Against A Trans Counselor At The Space & Rocket Center Is All It Took To Unleash The Wolves

An Online Rant Against A Trans Counselor At The Space & Rocket Center Is All It Took To Unleash The Wolves

    [ad_1]

For LGBTQ+ employees at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, what used to be a haven now feels like a nightmare — and it only took one fearmongering rallying cry from a parent.

In a Facebook post from March 9, Clay Yarbrough, the father of a child enrolled at Space Camp, urged parents to pull their children from the program and started a smear campaign against a camp counselor named Molly Bowman.

    Why? Because she’s trans.

As a bisexual woman who has struggled with her identity for years, I’m pretty tired of rhetoric that not only makes queer people question our own worth, but frequently makes us, especially members of the trans community, feel unsafe. As I watched all of this play out in the news, I knew I had to get the story from those who hadn’t yet been included in the conversation.

Though the post included no evidence or credible allegations of wrongdoing on Bowman’s part, the crux of Yarbrough’s argument hinged on the idea that Bowman could do something wrong — a possibility that, of course, isn’t exclusive to the LGBTQ+ community.

Yarbrough misgendered and used slurs against Bowman online, his post amassing comments that made unfounded accusations that she and the rest of the LGBTQ+ counselors had behaved inappropriately. The group dissected Bowman’s personal social media pages, and even her Amazon wish list, in their attempts to pull something from nothing.

Yarbrough’s post blew up with over 6,000 shares, garnering the attention of right-wing groups and politicians. Moms For Liberty Alabama tweeted Yarbrough’s Facebook post with the comment: “Do not send your children to Space Camp in Huntsville, AL. The entire program has gone woke! Girls as young as 7 attend Space Camp and this is what they are exposed to! Protect your kids!!!!

Given that the age range for the camp begins at 9, the group was already off to a rocky start.

Meanwhile, the right-wing account Libs of TikTok misgendered Bowman and repeated the baseless claim that Bowman “went into the girl’s showers while they were changing.”

Bowman’s supporters began researching Yarbrough. Commenters on his Facebook post raised questions about Yarbrough’s own alleged criminal past, which he dismissed on March 11 as irrelevant. After the backlash, Yarbrough wrote on Facebook: “Oh and because I have a mug shot on the internet and have been arrested before then I am a axe murdered with 12 criminal records, in a place I haven’t been since I was 23, IM ALSO ARMED AND DANGEROUS.”

He also posted a comment that read: “The crap is hitting the fan and I just spoiled the devils plans to hurt some kids!!! Major change is coming and the GOD I worship is still in charge and still more powerful than anything they can throw at me!!”

The Facebook conversation caused so many ripples that local conservative officials quickly weighed in.

“I call on the Center to immediately remove this individual and open a safety review to consider the potential harm and damages they have inadvertently caused children,” Rep. Dale Strong (R-Ala.) wrote in a statement.

Rep. Gary Palmer, another Alabama Republican, posted a similar sentiment on March 11, writing on social media: “The situation currently unfolding at @SpaceCampUSA is unacceptable. When parents send their kids to Space Camp in Alabama, they should be confident they are going to a safe, educational environment.”

The Space & Rocket Center said in a statement that the organization conducts extensive background checks on prospective employees, so Bowman wouldn’t have landed the job to begin with if she had a criminal record. The space center said in the statement that she has not been reported for misconduct.

On March 20, Alabama state Rep. Mark Gidley (R) attempted to amend House Bill 130, also known as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which would ban discussions of gender identity and sexual orientation in public school classrooms through grade 12. (Under current law, discussion of those topics is only forbidden through fifth grade.) The amendment, which would have specified that Space Camp is subject to those same rules, died in committee, and HB 130 was likewise killed in mid-May.

On March 15, Rocket Center CEO Kimberly Robinson sent an internal memo to staff, which an employee shared with me. The memo described how employees had been harassed and how “people on our staff have also received threats over email and phone.”

Patricia Ammons, senior director of public and media relations at the Center, told me over email that Robinson “wanted to send a message expressing her care and concern for our employees’ safety and well-being.”

Following an investigation, the Rocket Center said in a March 29 public statement that “there is no evidence of inappropriate behavior or malfeasance between any Space Camp staff and student campers.” The statement said the Rocket Center provides private areas for campers to change, shower and use the restroom, and no staffers had been in those areas.

Four Rocket Center employees told me that the center fostered an inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ employees, but that it has soured somewhat since the incidents of harassment.

“It seemed like a very queer-positive place, especially for Alabama,” said one. “My department has a ton of LGBTQ+ people in it and most of us feel a bit hung out to dry by higher-ups.”

Another employee said they’d feel better if the center made a “definitive statement” against anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination, instead of the “HR bullshit we always get at jobs.”

When asked about its support for LGBTQ+ workers, a Rocket Center representative said: “Space Camp is and will remain an equal-opportunity employer adhering to all state and federal laws regulating hiring practices. We are an apolitical organization with no social agenda. Our singular mission is to inspire and educate.”

The Rocket Center conducted an internal investigation and a review of on-campus footage, and concluded that Bowman had done nothing wrong. But she was still transferred to a new department — something that the first employee claims amounted to “punish[ing] a trans employee for online weirdos being mad she’s trans.”

As these trolls have gotten more boisterous and bold, Bowman and her peers have grown concerned for their physical safety.

“As LGBTQ+ folks, we are just trying to do a job that we are underpaid for,” an employee told me. “We’re not indoctrinating your kids or being inappropriate.”

Recently, there have been “many comments from guests regarding our looks and religion,” another said. “It’s a mix of hate and love, but more hate lately.”

“Many [employees] have left because they are scared for their lives, regardless if they are trans or not,” this employee said. “I would feel safer with metal detectors. It’s reasonable for a place that is part of the [NASA] arsenal and that has kids to have metal detectors.”

When I asked what safety precautions the center has taken to protect employees and keep them in the loop about any developing safety issues, a representative told me: “We take the safety of our campers, visitors, and staff extremely seriously. As reported [in the center’s post-investigation statement], we worked with the Huntsville Police Department to increase patrols through our campus and engaged a private security firm in the days and weeks following the social media post with accusations against an employee.”

The employees told me they hadn’t seen much change, beyond noticing police cars on patrol every so often.

The most concerning safety risk, multiple employees told me, was when someone shot a BB gun at the windshield of an employee’s car toward the end of March. The queer employees said the incident spurred fear for themselves and the kids who visit the center — the very children whom all these agitated conservatives are ostensibly trying to protect.

The Huntsville Police Department would neither confirm nor deny that a police report was filed, citing confidentiality restrictions. The Rocket Center said it couldn’t confirm that an employee’s car had been shot at. One of my sources speculated that the center’s leadership is worried about losing funding, and is therefore opting not to confirm any specific threats or violence.

The employees I spoke to don’t feel like management is showing up for them when they feel particularly vulnerable. One employee told me that a recent policy change prohibits employees from wearing any pins other than those provided by NASA. Many of the non-NASA pins that employees wore were Pride- and pronoun-related.

“Regarding pins staffers may wear, it has been a long-standing policy that pins and other embellishments focus on and don’t distract from our mission,” a Rocket Center representative said. According to the workers I talked to, their pins weren’t previously policed.

All in all, I believe that the center missed an opportunity to really stand up for Bowman and queer employees as a whole. Staff there are limited in what they’re allowed to say, and the political pressure brought against them has been significant. Still, the higher-ups have a duty to protect all employees, especially given the widely held attitudes about queer people in the state of Alabama.

“Shame on the transphobic politicians that want to kick out the LGBTQ+ [employees],” one employee I spoke to said. In my opinion, calling for someone’s termination without any facts to back up that action is irresponsible at best and blatant discrimination at worst.

If the politicians who are so up in arms about a trans person working at the Space & Rocket Center want to protect children ― as they claim ― then they need to protect all children. Keep religion-based ideology out of the classroom and out of integral programs like Space Camp. Allow for safe spaces for queer kids to feel seen and worthy of education and love. The separation of church and state exists for a reason, and dismantling that freedom is inherently un-American. It’s about time that political leaders in this country stop weaponizing religion to justify agendas based on personal bigotry.

If one person’s hateful comments hadn’t snowballed, and politicians and hate groups hadn’t bullied Bowman, maybe she wouldn’t now feel like she needs to pack up and leave her state — along with her job, friends and family — to feel safe. But that’s what she feels she has to do.

Due to recent events and media coverage I no longer feel safe living in Alabama,” she wrote in a note on a GoFundMe drive. “This move is not just a change of scenery; it’s a crucial step towards rebuilding my life and securing a stable future.”

Queer people should be allowed to live, work and thrive in every single state. What will it take to get us there?
