  • Algolux Extends Eos Perception Software to Address Critical ADAS and Autonomous Vehicle Depth Limitations

Algolux Extends Eos Perception Software to Address Critical ADAS and Autonomous Vehicle Depth Limitations

The new Eos Robust Depth Perception Software resolves the range, resolution, cost, and robustness limitations of the latest lidar, radar, and camera based systems combined with a scalable and modular software perception suite.

    Press Release

    Sep 12, 2022

Algolux Inc., the leading provider of robust and scalable depth perception solutions, has announced its Eos Robust Depth Perception Software. The expanded AI software offering builds on the company’s advanced perception portfolio to now deliver both industry-leading dense depth estimation and robust perception to further increase the safety of passenger and transport vehicles in all lighting and weather conditions.

This new offering addresses the cost and performance limitations in today’s automated driver assist systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicle (AV) platforms by applying the same breakthrough deep learning approach used by Algolux’s award winning robust perception software.

Mercedes-Benz has a track record as an industry leader delivering ADAS and autonomous driving systems, so we intimately understand the need to further improve the perception capabilities of these systems to enable safer operation of vehicles in all operating conditions,” said Werner Ritter, Manager, Vision Enhancement Technology Environment Perception, Mercedes-Benz AG. “Algolux has leveraged the novel AI technology in their camera-based Eos Robust Depth Perception Software to deliver dense depth and detection that provide next-generation range and robustness while addressing limitations of current lidar and radar based approaches for ADAS and autonomous driving.

The ability to estimate the distance of an object is a fundamental capability for ADAS and automated driving. It allows the vehicle to understand where things are in its surroundings in order to know when to perform a lane change, help park a car, issue a warning to the driver, or automatically brake in an emergency situation such as for debris on the road. This is accomplished today by various types of sensors, such as lidar, radar, and stereo or mono cameras, and edge software that interprets the sensor information to determine distance to important objects, features, or obstacles in front and around the vehicle.

Unfortunately, each of the current approaches have limitations that hamper safe operation in all conditions. Lidar has limited effective range (up to 200m) due to decreasing point density the further away an object is, resulting in poor object detection capabilities, and low robustness in harsh weather conditions such as fog or rain due to backscatter of the laser. It is also costly, currently in the hundreds to thousands of dollars per sensor. Radar has good range and robustness but poor resolution, also limiting its ability to detect and classify objects. Today’s stereo camera approaches can do a good job of object detection but are hard to keep calibrated and have low robustness, and mono cameras have many issues resulting in poor depth estimation.

Eos Robust Depth Perception Software addresses these limitations by robustly providing dense depth together with accurate perception capabilities to determine distance and elevation even out to long distances (1km) and identify objects, pedestrians, or bicyclists, and even lost cargo or other hazardous road debris to further improve driving safety. These modular capabilities provide rich 3D scene reconstruction and provide a highly capable and cost-effective alternative to lidar, radar, and today’s stereo approaches.

    Eos accomplishes this with:

    • a multi-camera approach supporting a wide baseline between the cameras, even beyond 2m, especially useful for long-range applications such as trucking
    • flexible support of up to 8MP automotive camera sensors and any field of view for forward, rear, and surround configurations
    • real time adaptive calibration to address vibration and movement between the cameras or misalignments while driving, historically a key challenge for wide-baseline configurations
    • an efficient embedded implementation of Algolux’s novel end-to-end deep learned architecture for both depth estimation and perception
    • the ability to detect and determine distance for typical road objects and even unknown road debris

Algolux has proven its Eos depth perception performance in OEM and Tier 1 engagements involving both trucking and automotive applications in North America and Europe. Visit www.algolux.com to learn more and schedule an evaluation.

  • BluWave-ai and Summerside Deliver 100% Solar Powered Concert During Bryan Adams’ 2022 Canadian Tour

BluWave-ai and Summerside Deliver 100% Solar Powered Concert During Bryan Adams’ 2022 Canadian Tour

First 100% Directly Connected, Time Shifted, Solar Energy Powered Indoor Rock Concert in North America

    Press Release

    Sep 12, 2022

The City of Summerside and BluWave-ai completed the first 100% time-shifted solar energy powered concert in North America. This feat took place on the first stop of the 2022 Canadian Tour of globally renowned Canadian musician, Bryan Adams, at the Credit Union Place in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada from 8-11 pm on Tuesday, August 31st. The concert was run indoors at night leveraging solar and battery solutions. This milestone for BluWave-ai and Summerside is building off of their shared project, the Canadian Smart Grid AI Center of Excellence at the City of Summerside, announced earlier this year.

Leveraging the BluWave-ai energy optimization platform running in the cloud, BluWave-ai Edge and BluWave-ai Center, the partners were able to predict solar production during the day of August 31st. Through this, they could store sufficient solar capacity in a 890 kWh battery to cover the projected energy demand of the concert such as lighting, audio equipment, and air conditioning. With a day of immense solar fluctuations, the system was able to operate the building in advance of the concert while storing enough solar energy to drive the concert in the evening.

Once the concert started, the automated platform took over to detect the increased load created by the concert and peripheral elements and managed the stored solar energy to supply the concert load over the 3 hour period.

Below is how the system played out on concert day:

    • The AI platform left enough battery capacity unfilled during the night of August 30th to August 31st to fill the battery with solar production at the Summerside CUP on the day of the Bryan Adams concert, August 31st.
    • From approximately 8:00 am to 12:00 pm AST the battery was loaded with 496kWh of coincidental solar produced energy by setting thresholds. This way, solar generated over capacity was moved to the battery for the concert in the evening while the rest of the facility could run on a combo of Summerside Wind Power and regular grid power.
    • Baselining of the overall facility power usage from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm AST on days without a concert showed the electricity load. During this time averaged 718.5 kWh for the facility with no concert.
    • During the 3 hour concert the facility used 1173 kWh. The total incremental energy from the concert was 454.5 kWh compared to regular days.
    • During the concert the BluWave-ai system delivered 496kWh of time-shifted green solar power via the battery or an average of 165kW per hour more, covering the entire needs of the concert and associated climate control.

To showcase the performance of the BluWave-ai Canadian Smart Grid Center of excellence which works with Summerside’s wind farm, solar array, battery storage, grid connection, and smart metering assets, the cloud-based AI optimization platform was able to deliver a 100% solar powered concert with less than 24 hours to configure, commission, and operationalize to support the new demand of the system to support the green rock concert.

In November 2021, BluWave‐ai and the City of Summerside announced the completion of the first-end to-end AI‐optimized grid in North America, the first industry proof point of a scalable system applicable to entire regions and countries for transitioning energy networks toward maximizing the use of renewable assets. In 2021, BluWave-ai was awarded a major contract to advance Summerside’s system utility manager software to integrate a new 26‐megawatt Solar and Battery project.

The test during the Bryan Adams August 31st concert used a subset of the Summerside smart grid and AI control system to manage operations, perfectly matching solar powering the concert load.

“As a testament to the robustness and flexibility of the BluWave-ai energy optimization platform, and with very short notice, the system was able to manage energy use at the arena to supply the concert with 100% solar energy,” said Devashish Paul, CEO of BluWave-ai. “Once the constraints were identified, the automated platform took over. This proved a compelling use case for time-shifting solar energy which is applicable for large commercial enterprises, electric vehicle fleets and for supporting the grid with demand response and resiliency without resorting to diesel backup generators and shows another example of our company’s live real-time deployments on streaming data and renewable energy assets.”

“Summerside is committed to growing our net zero economy and leading PEI’s Clean Tech Innovations has invested in the smart grid, building renewable energy generation and creating the CUP Arena microgrid with the solar and battery energy storage system from Samsung C&T. We brought in BluWave-ai as a partner to set up the Canadian Smart Grid AI Center of Excellence and provide the AI-enabled control of the city smart grid,” said Mike Thususka, Summerside Director of Economic Development. “To showcase our capabilities as a leading North American municipality, we decided to deliver a 100% green solar energy concert experience at our arena. We continue to invest in our green future and by 2023 with the Sunbank solar and storage facility, Summerside will be running off 70% renewable energy with an eye to hit 100% in the very near future. Industries setting up operations in Summerside may be eligible for various clean tech and first customer experiences using Summerside’s leading edge infrastructure which we demonstrated at the concert working with our partners BluWave-ai.”

“SDTC has been a proud supporter of BluWave-ai’s data-driven AI technology since 2018,” said Leah Lawrence, President of SDTC. “What better way to showcase the power of this homegrown Canadian innovation than by running a major concert event from one of our country’s rock icons off of solar energy! Congratulations to the team at BluWave-ai and the City of Summerside for leading the way in making the entertainment industry more sustainable as we move towards Net Zero.”

Even following a partially cloudy day, Summerside and BluWave-ai delivered a 100% solar energy power for the Bryan Adams concert by time shifting solar energy over-production to the evening and matching it to the concert load. This proved that the entertainment and sports events industry can run their events without depending on elaborate carbon-emitting diesel generation backup systems for resiliency when solar powered batteries can be connected to events. In Summerside’s case, the battery and solar generation are on site. For concert locations without this capability, batteries can be charged off-site and moved to the venue by electric trucking rather than by installing diesel generators moved by diesel-powered trucks, enabling a similar 100% clean operation.

To learn more about decarbonizing your city, utility or enterprise applications, please contact info@bluwave-ai.com.

BluWave-ai Research Note: According to existing public documentation of equivalent sized or larger solar installations at sporting and entertainment facilities across North America, none of the facilities which exceed Summerside’s solar capacity have sufficient storage capacity to run a 3 hour 400+ kWh concert event with purely stored, locally generated solar energy.

  • FORO Helps Indiana Make Automotive History Again

FORO Helps Indiana Make Automotive History Again

Indiana DOT uses AI to save money and time.

    Press Release

    Jun 28, 2022

FORO of Atlanta, GA, and their AI-powered Data and Decision Analysis Solution (DDA) for DOTs gain traction. What started in Indiana at the Crossroads of America in 2019 was well-received by recent AASHTO attendees seeking new and innovative ways to work more efficiently and meet or exceed their goals. For many years, Indiana was the center of the automobile industry. Elwood Haynes built one of the first successful automobiles in 1894 and tested it on the Fourth of July in Kokomo. He wanted to show the world that he could do better.

Fast forward 125 years later to 2019 when the Indiana DOT had the same desire as Elwood Haynes. They wanted to do better like most DOTs do today in tackling their gigantic missions with limited resources and staff. So they asked themselves, what changes can we make or what innovations can we use in order to do better than we’re doing right now? INDOT concluded that if they could find a way to spend more time making the best decisions possible to optimize their budgets and maximize their efforts and less time pouring over the mountains of project data they used in order to make those decisions, they could do better. Their answer came in two words, artificial intelligence.

Enter FORO, a company founded in 2017 with the desire to become a leading facilitator in the improvement of organization, collaboration and decision-making for clients using artificial intelligence and machine learning. Turned out that INDOT the client and FORO the company were the perfect match. “What INDOT was looking to achieve through AI ticked off many of the boxes on what we were looking to deliver to our clients,” recalls FORO Founder Brett Boston. “We could not have been more aligned in our goals, which made our collaboration all the better in creating a custom data and decision analysis solution to suit their needs and gain the positive results that we were both looking to achieve through mission-focused AI.”

That was the beginning for FORO’s AI-based DDA solutions for DOTs. The word has spread and other DOTs are now doing what started in Indiana in 2017. AI is a critical tool in the private sector, helping corporations to maximize their revenue through improved decision-making and heightened productivity. As data becomes more leveraged in the business world, so too will the adoption of AI-based decision-making in the public sector.

“The men and women of our nation’s departments of transportation have a vital and never-ending job of keeping our roadways open and safe. It is an honor to work with these dedicated professionals and provide a platform tool that saves staff time, taxpayers’ money, and keeps the greatest road system on the planet moving,” added Boston.

Blyncsy’s Machine Vision Technology Selected to Improve Public Transit in New York Tri-State Area

Transit Tech Lab announced that Blyncsy was selected among nearly 150 other applicants for the COVID-19 Recovery and Environmental Sustainability challenges, a global competition calling for technologies to improve public transit safety and meet clean energy objectives.

    Press Release

    May 24, 2022

Transit Tech Lab announced that Blyncsy was selected among nearly 150 other applicants for the COVID-19 Recovery and Environmental Sustainability challenges, a global competition calling for technologies to improve public transit safety and meet clean energy objectives.

Transit Tech Lab presented Blyncsy with the opportunity to pilot it’s Payver technology to gain insights into the condition of bus shelters and properly allocate resources to ensure bus shelters are clean and safe for NJ Transit. Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will also be piloting Payver to monitor paint line striping visibility and pavement condition. Blyncsy’s Payver technology utilizes dash cam imagery and machine learning algorithms to passively provide a roadway view of bus stops and automatically detect maintenance issues. Blyncsy’s machine vision technology can detect anything the eye can see, like whether a bus shelter is blocked or if trash and graffiti are present. Payver can also detect street lighting to see if shelters are properly lit at night or if a light is on during the day.

Currently, bus shelter maintenance relies on manual inspections and public complaints which can result in longer response times to issues. By using machine vision on roadways, agencies will gain near real-time insights, thus decreasing emissions and increasing the speed and efficiency of maintenance.

The COVID-19 Response Challenge was launched with the goal of ensuring customers and employees feel safe, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and making transit more responsive to the needs of New Yorkers. “Blyncsy’s goal is to make people actually want to use transit again and that they feel safe doing so. By addressing safety critical issues the minute they occur, we can help rejuvenate transit everywhere,” said Mark Pittman, founder and CEO of Blyncsy.

Blyncsy, along with the other seven companies chosen, will test their solutions over an 8-week period with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and NJ TRANSIT.

“We at Kronos are building a world-class team of mathematicians, physicists, scientists and other professionals whose mission is to reverse global warming by helping to make  Fusion Energy commercially viable in the near future,” said Michael Pierce Hoban, the CEO of Kronos Fusion Energy Algorithms

Recreating the power of the sun on earth in a controlled manner takes computing power, machine learning, artificial intelligence, blockchain, quantum computers, neural networks, and other technological advances that were not even dreamed of 60 years ago when Fusion Energy research began globally. But now, with these three technological breakthroughs, the global competition to design the next-generation Fusion Energy Power Plants that are more efficient than today’s carbon-burning power plants is underway in full swing.

The first technological barrier that was overcome is that the computing power now exists to model the sun in simulations more accurately with the launch of the Summit Supercomputer in Oak Ridge that set the world record in 2018, and in June 2021, Japan’s Fugaka Supercomputer set a new world record of 422 petaflops.

The second technological barrier that was overcome in September 2021 was the announcement of the most powerful magnet ever created on earth (https://news.mit.edu/2021/MIT-CFS-major-advance-toward-fusion-energy-0908). This is the first magnet with enough power capable of containing a fast-moving plasma field at heats in excess of 150M degrees Celsius without touching and melting the containment barrier.

The third technological barrier that has been the most difficult to overcome is the 1% efficiency rate (Q1 Mechanical Gain) of the top fusion energy demo reactors on earth today. The first two breakthroughs will enable the world’s top Fusion energy designers to reach a 25% efficiency rate (Q25 Mechanical Gain) by 2050. This has been a major technological barrier because there has been no fusion energy reactor solution that has been proposed in the world that exceeds 25% efficiency until now.

Kronos Fusion Energy Algorithms LLC announced that after five years studying the global research in Fusion Energy, we have developed advanced algorithms and simulations to achieve a 40% efficiency rate (Q40 Mechanical Gain) for Commercial Fusion Energy Power Plants that will enable a 20-year advancement in the launch dates of the world’s first Fusion Energy Power Plants that are more efficient than today’s carbon burning power plants. Our algorithms and simulations use Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, neural networks, blockchain, quantum computing and other advances to reduce the error rate at a Fusion Energy Reactor from the 15% error rate experienced today at the International Thermodynamic Experimental Reactor (ITER) in France to a 1% error rate after our simulations have optimized the numerous variables to identify the disruptions that cause 31% of the maintenance shutdowns at ITER.

Vouch Marks Entry Into Europe With the Setup of Its London Operations

Singaporean technology start-up aims to revolutionise hospitality industry in Europe one hotel property at a time

    Press Release

    Oct 11, 2021

Award-winning guest experience platform provider – Vouch – has announced plans to expand into global markets, with the opening of its operations in London as a gateway to the rest of Europe.

In the United Kingdom, Vouch Concierge is currently working with boutique brands Hotel du Vin and Malmaison to set up their pre-stay concierge, and with a further six properties under the Frasers Hospitality Group throughout Britain for their guest experience platforms as domestic travel in the UK surges. Vouch is also giving all UK-based hotels the opportunity to trial the platform with a free Vouch subscription from now until the end of 2021.

Vouch aims to have at least 30% of revenue coming from Europe and is setting a target of having a strong presence in at least 3 European countries by the end of 2022.

The Singapore headquartered start-up provides innovative AI-powered technology to the hospitality and travel segment.

Armed with seed funding of SGD$1.51 million (USD$1.1 million) led by Forge Ventures, the funding will be used for expansion and product development for a new category of technology for hotels: the guest experience platform.

Without needing to download an app for a short-term stay, Vouch’s guest experience platform allows guests to check-in, make room requests, order food and beverages and get instant answers to commonly asked questions, by scanning a QR code on their mobile phones. Vouch Concierge has seen wide adoption of its platform in Asia to improve productivity through the streamlining of hotel operations and providing round the clock services for guests. In attractions like museums, users can enjoy the full experience with audio tours, find out about artefacts and even play interactive games to enhance the visitor experience.

Since its launch in 2018, Vouch has rolled out its services and partnered with hospitality brands in Asia and is now looking to expand globally. Founder and CEO Joseph Ling said: “In Singapore, for example, we have covered 25% of all rooms under international groups such as Frasers Hospitality, Hyatt Hotels, Pan Pacific Hotels Group and the InterContinental Hotels Group. There is a genuine need for a solution that helps hotels improve manpower efficiency and the pandemic has accelerated this need. Our plan this year is to expand aggressively into new markets that will benefit most from a productivity platform like ours, namely Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea and the United Kingdom.”

While travel and tourism have remained low across the world due to COVID-19, Vouch Concierge aims to help businesses and consumers in these sectors cope better in a pandemic.

By incorporating Vouch into their operations, businesses can better plan for manpower requirements and avoid greater uncertainty associated with fluctuating pandemic intensity and accompanying social distancing requirements.

  • College of DuPage Becomes First NJCAA Program to Adopt PlaySight’s Smart Sports AI Technology

College of DuPage Becomes First NJCAA Program to Adopt PlaySight’s Smart Sports AI Technology

    Press Release

    updated: May 20, 2019

Today, the College of DuPage and PlaySight are excited to announce a new technology partnership – PlaySight’s SmartCourt sports AI technology will be coming to the Chaparrals coaches and student-athletes. The Chaparrals will have access to live streaming and automated production technology, as well as video and performance analysis tools. PlaySight officially partnered with the NJCAA in November of last year, and College of DuPage is the first member-school to adopt the technology for its athletic department.

Top athletes and teams across the sporting world have been training and playing with PlaySight for several years now, including the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons, several leading NCAA basketball programs, including the University of North Carolina and Wake Forest University, and over 70 other NCAA programs across tennis and other varsity sports. PlaySight also works with leading high schools, prep schools and academies throughout the country and around the world.

PlaySight was the first company to develop advanced artificial intelligence (AI) software for sports that has enabled a pro-level platform to be brought to all levels of athletics. PlaySight makes courts, gyms, fields and rinks ‘Smart’ by installing its software and connected camera technology. Once set up, SmartCourts provide several benefits to athletes, coaches, teams and fans, from automated HD broadcast live streaming and advanced coaching tools to instant replay video, VAR, and a content platform to store, manage and share video quickly and seamlessly.

Greg McVey, the director of Athletics and Recreational Programs at College of DuPage expects PlaySight to help his program engage with both its student-athletes and community in new ways. “Technology allows athletic departments to reach out in new and creative ways all of the time.  By partnering with PlaySight and its Smart technology and becoming its first community college client, this will enhance College of DuPage and its student-athletes and programs in ways that we haven’t achieved before. We’re excited about delivering our message to our athletes and community with this new platform.”

“As a company, we are focused on bringing technology to all teams and levels, and that is why we were so excited last year to officially partner with the NJCAA,” said PlaySight Director Erik Gormley. “DuPage has established itself as a sports technology leader within the community college level and we’re excited to see the impact that our Smart platform will have on the school, alumni, community, coaches and athletes. We’re leveling the playing field with our affordable platform and our goal is to give every team the same experience with our video technology.”

Both PlaySight and the NJCAA expect DuPage to be the first of many community colleges to add this technology heading into next season. “It is exciting to see the innovative technology from PlaySight starting to grow with our member colleges,” said Brian Luckett, Chief External Affairs and Development Officer of the NJCAA. “The autonomous video production and SmartCourt technology has a significant impact for NJCAA programs when they are expected to do more with less. This technology helps to do just that.”

  • Top Canadian Law Firms’ Courtroom Performance Revealed by Legal Analytics Software

Top Canadian Law Firms’ Courtroom Performance Revealed by Legal Analytics Software

    Press Release

    updated: Sep 19, 2017

A Miami-based software firm is causing ripples in the Canadian legal sector with the release of its free Canada Courts Report 2017, which ranks the nation’s top lawyers and law firms based on their courtroom performance. Although data from the courts analyzed in the survey, which range from the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT) to the Territorial Court of Yukon, has been publicly available for many years, Premonition is the first company to create a comprehensive, searchable archive of these records. The Canada Courts Report ranks the most successful litigators in each court according to the percentage of their cases won over the past three years, providing the public with a taste of the deeper analysis available to Premonition clients.

“What we’re talking about here is translating the performance of lawyers and firms into hard statistics,” says Premonition CEO and Co-Founder Guy Kurlandski. “For literally centuries, legal services have been a credence goodbuyers make their best guess based on a firm’s marketing and reputation, and win or lose, never really know whether they made a good purchase or not. We aim to put an end to this unfair system.”

“The rankings you see in the Canada Courts Report are fairly basic,” continues Premonition’s other Co-Founder and CIO Toby Unwin. “All they tell you is who has won the highest percentage of their cases in a given court. Once you dig a little further into the numbers though, you start to get a picture of why certain attorneys win more than others.”

One of the value propositions Premonition mentions over and over again in their materials is the centrality of the relationship between a lawyer and a given judge. The impact of judicial preference on Canadian court decisions has long been anecdotally testified to, but quantitative research has been limited by the sheer scale of data involved. Now, with a few keystrokes, Premonition can identify outlier attorneys who massively over- or under-perform before certain judges. Internationally, the company has claimed this lawyer-judge dynamic accounts for a 30.7% skew in case outcomes.

“If a modest investment in the legal ‘scouting’ we provide can turn a corporate client’s litigation portfolio from a 50/50 proposition to an 80/20, that represents a potential savings in the millions,” Unwin notes.

Canada is Premonition’s most recent national expansion, joining operations in the United States, United Kingdom, India, Australia and more. Per its report, the firm is currently seeking a Canadian representative. Thanks to the controversial response its previous domestic rankings have provoked among attorneys who don’t find themselves listed, local partners like Premonition UK’s Ian Dodd often find themselves making industry headlines.

“There were a fair number of upset barristers when we released our first Courts Report for the UK,” says Dodd, “but before long I was taking calls every day from firms with clients who demanded performance data before putting money on the table. Now it’s ‘the new black,’ and Premonition’s right in the thick of it.”

Premonition’s Canada Courts Report 2017 is available now as a free download at https://www.premonition.ai/reports.

  • 13-Year-Old Girl Creates a Siri Clone in Less Than a Week

13-Year-Old Girl Creates a Siri Clone in Less Than a Week

Kari is a young girl of amazing talent and brilliant mind; yet, due to no fault of her own is unable to find a school place.

    Press Release

    updated: Jul 12, 2017

Through a new interest in computer science and wanting to learn more about artificial intelligence 13-year-old Kari Lawler from Solihull, UK set herself the challenge of creating her own virtual assistant like Apple’s Siri or Amazon’s Alexa. After purchasing a few books, she very quickly taught herself the necessary programming skills and within a few days it was apparent she was making considerable progress and amazingly within just one week she had a working prototype.

Her family has stated it’s amazing what she has achieved at her age with very little resources. The fact her personal assistant responds in a similar manner to Siri and even has the same witty attitude when asked something out of the ordinary is marvelous. It’s also especially incredible when you consider what the large technology companies have probably spent on producing something not much different to what Kari has managed to achieve in such a short amount of time.

Looking to the future Kari does plan to expand on her prototype and does see great value in this type of technology. She is currently working on making her assistant more realistic with more human like back and forth conversation. If achievable she thinks this type of virtual human interaction would be of great benefit in areas such as social care; like providing company to the elderly or assistance for people with dementia. Similarly, she sees it been used as a learning assistant for whole class teaching or for helping individual students in a school. Realistically though, she appreciates she has a long way to go before realizing this vision. However, in the meantime she would very much like to connect and learn through maybe a mentoring role with any individuals or companies in this field.

    About Kari
Kari, now 14 is a very bright and gifted young lady excelling in English, mathematics and science. At the age of 11 she was diagnosed with ASD. Since her diagnosis and through no fault of her own she has had great difficulty in accessing an education in a mainstream setting which has resulted in her being out of school now for just over a year. The resistance Kari is facing is solely down to a complete lack of understanding of Autism. Even though Kari has never had any learning needs, behavioral issues, communication or high anxiety issues at school, schools approached just assume the worse based on stereotypes and dismissively say no without looking at her as an individual. Overall Kari wants nothing more than to be back in school doing what she loves the most, which is learning.

EyesOnALZ Citizen Science Project to Enlist Millions of PBS Viewers to Fight Alzheimer’s

    Press Release

    updated: Apr 6, 2017

EyesOnALZ (http://eyesonalz.com) – a project to crowdsource Alzheimer’s research is launching an online competition to #CrushALZ on April 6th, in partnership with The Crowd & The Cloud – a public television documentary series about citizen science.

The documentary, created by a producer of Carl Sagan’s original COSMOS series, shines first light on a growing movement of citizens participating en masse in the advancement of scientific research. The creators of this 4-part mini-series are dedicated to “turning viewers into doers” by encouraging hands-on participation in science.

Normally it would take a year for Cornell to analyze these data, but with the momentum of the documentary, we hope to enlist the help of millions of viewers to answer a key research question that will help us leap forward toward a treatment.

Pietro Michelucci, Director, Human Computation Institute

Stall Catchers (http://stallcatchers.com), developed as part of the EyesOnALZ project, is the first citizen science game to tackle Alzheimer’s disease. EyesOnALZ and Stall Catchers are featured in Episode 1 of the The Crowd and The Cloud, which will premier on National Public Television across the US on April 6th, and is available to watch online at http://crowdandcloud.org.

EyesOnALZ founder Pietro Michelucci will kick-off the “#CrushALZ Team Competition” on Stall Catchers during the social media event immediately following the series premiere. This live after-show event will take place at 10PM ET April 6, on The Crowd and The Cloud Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/crowdandcloudTV/).

Dr. Michelucci will join the live video stream with other subjects of the series, including EyesOnALZ biomedical collaborator Chris Schaffer from Cornell University. The month-long team competition aims to accelerate Cornell’s groundbreaking Alzheimer’s research program, which, according to Dr. Schaffer, “would be impractical without Stall Catchers”.

Any interested organization will be able to create a team on Stall Catchers and compete with other organizations who want to help eliminate Alzheimer’s. The team registration will open up at 6AM ET, April 6 at StallCatchers.com. Instructions on how to set up teams and invite members will be posted on the EyesOnALZ blog (http://blog.eyesonalz.com) that morning.

The most active teams in the competition will receive daily exposure via EyesOnALZ media channels and those of partner organizations. A number of PBS stations, also set to participate in the competition, will invite their local viewers to join forces and #CrushALZ.

According to Dr. Michelucci, a new Alzheimer’s dataset has been loaded into Stall Catchers just for the competition: “Normally it would take a year for Cornell to analyze these data, but with the momentum of the documentary, we hope to enlist the help of millions of viewers to answer a key research question that will help us leap forward toward a treatment.”

Players’ collective progress toward answering the research question will be reported throughout the competition. Dr. Michelucci plans to reveal the potential impact of this research question during the after-show event. “If all goes well, in one month we will have our answer and move on to the next question.”
