  • Brighton man charged with vehicular homicide in DUI crash on I-76 that killed his daughter

    A Brighton man has been charged with vehicular homicide and child abuse resulting in death in a Commerce City crash that killed his daughter last week, according to a news release from the Adams County District Attorney’s Office.

    Aaron Aguirre-Garay, 40, was driving his truck on Interstate 76 on Feb. 12 when he crashed into a fence, injuring himself and killing his daughter, according to an arrest affidavit from the Commerce City Police Department.

    Aguirre-Garay was charged with child abuse causing death, vehicular homicide – reckless and vehicular homicide – DUI in the crash, according to the district attorney’s office release. The affidavit and the release do not specify how old the girl was.

    Multiple witnesses saw Aguirre-Garay driving on a dirt shoulder off the road before his truck veered toward a fence, possibly because of a popped tire, according to the report. One witness saw the white truck swerve several times before the crash. Another person who went over to the vehicle after the crash spoke to Aguirre-Garay and said he smelled like alcohol. Witnesses found the girl lying on the ground outside the truck.

  • Officers seize 67,000 fentanyl pills, other drugs in Adams County; 2 men face felony charges

    Two men face multiple felony drug charges following searches of Adams County apartments and the seizure of what authorities said were an estimated 67,000 fentanyl pills, 521 grams of methamphetamine, 45 grams heroin and 667 grams of cocaine.

    Oscar Serrano Romano and Enrique Delgadillo Ruiz were arrested Dec. 18.

    As part of the investigation, the Northern Colorado Drug Task Force and the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Front Range Task Force executed search warrants for apartments in Thornton, Aurora and Westminster. During the search of the Thornton apartment, officers found several duffel bags containing bundled packages of suspected methamphetamine, cocaine and fentanyl, according to an affidavit from the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

    Officers reported finding bags they believed were being used to distribute drugs. They also found a parking pass for an apartment in Thornton where Ruiz was staying, according to the affidavit.

    Investigators obtained a search warrant for the second apartment on Dec. 18. They said they found a duffel bag containing suspected counterfeit fentanyl pills, cocaine, methamphetamine and heroin. Officers also found clear bags of suspected cocaine, an undetermined amount of money and a notebook that appeared to be handwritten daily logs of drug sales.

    Two Northglenn women are charged with 109 counts of animal cruelty after police rescued more than 70 dogs and cats from a home in the 1900 block of 116th Drive in July.

    Patti Joslin, 69, and Dakotah Joslin, 32, each is charged with 11 counts of felony aggravated animal cruelty and 98 counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals, according to the 17th Judicial District.

  • Aurora teen sentenced to 35 years in prison for deadly rental hall shooting

    A 17-year-old who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in a shooting at an Aurora rental hall was sentenced to 35 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections, the district attorney’s office said.

    Xavier Garcia, 17, was arrested after a shooting during a party in the 2000 block of Tower Road on March 23, 2024.

    The victim, 19-year-old Joseph Martinez, was standing against a wall when a fight broke out and Garcia approached him, pulled out a handgun and shot him in the chest, according to the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

    Martinez was taken to the hospital and later died.

    A 27-year-old man who shot two of his Topgolf coworkers — killing one of them — in December has pleaded guilty to murder and attempted murder.

    Victor Salazar-Guarache took a plea deal in Adams County District Court on Thursday, according to court records.

    Salazar-Guarache pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder, court records show. The plea deal dropped charges of first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree attempted murder and a violent-crime sentence enhancer from his case.

    The then-26-year-old Topgolf dishwasher was arrested in December after a midnight shooting in the parking lot of the Thornton Topgolf, 16011 Grant St., left one man dead, police said.

    Police said Salazar-Guarache got into an argument with one of his coworkers, clocked out early and waited in the parking lot for an hour to ambush him.

    Bryce Holden, a 22-year-old Topgolf dishwasher, was shot multiple times and died from his wounds, police said. The kitchen manager who walked out with Holden also was shot.

    As Holden and the manager exited the building and entered the parking lot, Salazar-Guarache got out his car and fired 12 shots at the pair, continuing to shoot even after Holden fell, according to his arrest affidavit.

    A former professional MMA fighter and Aurora community activist was charged with first-degree murder this week after police say he fatally shot a 28-year-old man during a child’s birthday party at a Commerce City park in retaliation for his son’s death.

    Lumumba Sayers, 46, is charged with first-degree murder and two counts of felony menacing in the Saturday shooting death of Malcolm Watson near Paradice Island Pool at Pioneer Park.

    He appeared in Adams County District Court on Thursday, where a judge increased his bail from $1 million to $5 million.

    According to an arrest affidavit and witness statements made in court Thursday, Watson was carrying party supplies for his son’s birthday at the pool at 5951 Monaco St. when Sayers walked up to him and shot him multiple times, including once in the head.

    After shooting Watson, Sayers went to talk with a man and a woman in a black Cadillac Escalade parked nearby before returning to Watson’s body, taking his keys and trying to place a handgun under his body, according to the affidavit.

    Commerce City police officers arrived on scene to find Sayers crouching over Watson before he started to walk toward the Escalade, according to the affidavit.

    Officers arrested him after witnesses began yelling that he was the shooter. Watson was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Witnesses told detectives they believed the shooting was retaliation or revenge for the death of Sayers’ son, 23-year-old Lumumba Sayers Jr., who was killed almost a year ago in a shooting involving one of Watson’s friends, according to the affidavit.

    Lumumba Sayers Jr., was one of two people killed in a shooting near 18th and Welton streets in Denver’s Five Points neighborhood on Aug. 19, 2023.

    Denver police arrested 24-year-old Tyrell Braxton on suspicion of first-degree murder in the shooting, but no public court records are available in the case.

    In response to an inquiry about Braxton’s case, the Denver District Attorney’s Office stated “no such records exist,” which is the only response prosecutors can provide under Colorado law when a case has been sealed.

    Braxton is on trial in federal court in Denver this week for a weapons charge related to the August 2023 shooting, according to court records.

    He was indicted by a grand jury in January on one count of possession of ammunition by a prohibited person, court records show.

    The trial is scheduled to wrap up this week, court officials said Thursday.

    In the wake of his son’s death, Sayers told Denver7 reporters that Sayers Jr. was dedicated to preventing gun violence in the community and was frequently at his father’s Aurora gym, the Heavy Hands Heavy Hearts Center.

    A 36-year-old man forced a woman into an SUV outside a hotel and fatally shot her as they argued, according to an arrest affidavit from the Westminster Police Department.

    Jesse Aaron Gladney is charged with first-degree murder in the domestic violence shooting death of 36-year-old Valarie Garcia on Saturday.

    A witness called 911 at 8:07 p.m. after seeing a man grab a woman by the neck and tell her to get into a Chevy Equinox at the Super 8 at 12055 N. Melody Dr., according to Gladney’s arrest affidavit. The witness also told police there was another person in the front seat.

    Ten minutes later, a witness reported a man shot a woman and she was unconscious near 120th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard in Thornton. Police later found the woman, Garcia, at Platte Valley Hospital in Brighton.

    The woman driving the Equinox during the shooting later contacted police and told them Gladney had asked her to pick him up from a hotel in Brighton and told her to keep driving. When they reached the Super 8, he went inside and came out with Garcia.

    Garcia and Gladney were arguing and he was pushing her against the car, the woman told police. The argument continued as they got in the car, until Gladney told Garcia to “Shut up or I’ll shoot you.”

    A few moments later, the woman reported hearing and smelling a gunshot while she was driving. Gladney told her he shot Garcia and started slapping Garcia and telling her not to fall asleep, according to the affidavit.
