Washington – Active shooters in America killed or injured 313 individuals across the country in 2022, the most casualties recorded in the last five years, according to a report released by the FBI on Wednesday.

Federal investigators define “active shooters” as “one or more individuals actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area.” The FBI said the report is intended to assist law enforcement, first responders and the public understand current threat levels.

Despite an 18% decrease in violent incidents involving active shooters in 2022 compared to the year prior, the number of casualties increased by nearly 29% — from 243 to 313 — the highest in the last five years.

In all, according to the FBI’s report, 50 active shooter incidents were carried out in 2022, down from 61 incidents in 2021, across 25 states and Washington, D.C. The statistics released also highlighted certain locations targeted by these violent actors, including schools, places of worship, residences and areas of commerce. Nearly half of all incidents occurred in what the FBI classified as “open spaces,” the report said.

The report did not encompass incidents that were related to gang violence, self-defense, drug violence, contained residential or domestic disputes, controlled barricade or hostage situations, crossfire of another criminal act or an action that appeared not to have put others in peril.

According to the report, 48% of shooters in 2022 had a known connection to either the location of the shooting or an individual who was targeted.

Texas experienced six active shooter incidents in 2022 — the most of any state — followed by Arizona, Florida, Michigan and New York.

Sixty-one firearms were used by shooters in the 50 active shooter incidents in 2022, the vast majority either handguns or rifles.

One hundred  individuals were killed in America in 2022 were killed during designated active shooter incidents, and another 213 wounded. The FBI said one law enforcement officer was killed and 21 were injured in the same type of active shooter incidents. Only 9 active shooter incidents had no casualties.

After a year marred by gun violence — including the deadly Uvalde, Texas, school shooting that left 19 children and two adults dead — the FBI’s statistics revealed a vast majority of the 50 active shooters in 2022 were male. Forty-seven were male, one was female, another nonbinary and one was unidentified, the report said. All were between the ages of 15 and 79.

According to the report, citizens across the United States were responsible for bringing 16% of the active shooter incidents in 2022 to an end, intervening to save those around them. In one instance, an unarmed man took down a shooter inside a church. And in another, an armed bystander killed a perpetrator who was shooting into a crowd. Twenty-nine active shooters were apprehended, the rest were either killed, died by suicide or remain at large. In 9 incidents, law enforcement engaged the shooter with gunfire.

“The FBI emphasizes the importance of active shooter training and exercises for both law enforcement, first responders, and citizens,” said the report. “The FBI remains dedicated to assisting federal, state, local, tribal, territorial, and campus law enforcement in its active shooter prevention, response, and recovery efforts, as well as training its international law enforcement partners. The FBI also remains steadfast in its efforts to train private citizens in active shooter survival, as it is imperative that citizens understand the risks faced and the resources available in an active shooter incident.

    Press Release

    Jan 10, 2023

SafeDefend, LLC, the nation’s leading provider of comprehensive crisis management solutions, and Findlay City Schools announced today that all staff in the Findlay City Schools organization will be receiving active shooter and crisis management training on Friday, Jan. 13. Findlay City Schools has adjusted the school calendar to be able to provide staff with this valuable training. Dr. Greg Vecchi, Phd, FBI (ret) is the Director of Training for SafeDefend. His experience as the former Chief of the FBI Behavioral Science Unit has been instrumental in developing the most effective, evidence-based, active killer response training available. Dr. Vecchi not only understands the best practices for crisis management and mitigation, but has deep understanding of the behaviors associated with active killers. Staff will be provided training on the SafeDefend system installed recently in Findlay City Schools as well as have an opportunity to engage in scenarios utilizing the SafeDefend system in coordination with Findlay City law enforcement, Findlay City fire, and first responders. The staff will be provided a full day of training to help prepare them to evacuate, evade or engage in an active shooter or life-threatening situation. Findlay first responders are working closely with Findlay City Schools and SafeDefend to provide emergency operation plans to facilitate the coordination of response for any crisis at a school.

“The Findlay City Schools are absolutely at the forefront of school safety. Providing the real-time notification and training that SafeDefend provides combined with their focus on a coordinated and effective law enforcement, fire, and EMT response puts Findlay City Schools as one of, if not the most, safe and prepared school districts in the country,” Jeff Green, President of SafeDefend.

“Findlay City Schools has an unwavering commitment to ensuring academic excellence and the safety of staff and students is paramount. Implementation of SafeDefend helps continue our work to ensure that our schools are safe places for learning and growth.” Mrs. Krista Crates-Miller, Interim Superintendent, Findlay City Schools.

“I am excited to bring our training to the staff at Findlay City Schools. Although I hope and expect that staff will never have to be involved in an active killer or life-threatening event, the training will empower staff to manage the crisis until help arrives and put them in the best position to ensure everyone gets home safely should it ever happen.” Dr. Greg Vecchi, PhD, FBI (ret), Director of Training, SafeDefend,

“SafeDefend coupled with the training on Jan. 13 highlights our commitment to the safety of our students and staff here at Findlay City Schools. We are proud of our proactive approach to providing this additional layer of safety and security, which is an expectation of every parent that trusts us with their child. However, we go much deeper with the partnership to provide a comprehensive notification and response package that is not only a model for communities moving forward but has brought everyone to the table to preplan available resources, communication, and pre-deploy and preassign those roles and responsibilities. All law enforcement, fire, EMS, and others in the community that have a role have these plans, and we are thankful to have this partnership and are proud of our collaborative efforts. The execution of this community-wide tactical plan takes shape and is noticeable in the trainers that will be involved on Jan. 13.” Mr. Matthew Cooper, Findlay School Board President, and Findlay Fire Department Battalion Chief.

Findlay City Schools has partnered with SafeDefend to bring this training to their staff and are working together to create the model of school safety for school districts across the country.

UVA shooting: 3 killed, 2 wounded and community told to shelter in place with suspect still at large

Charlottesville, Virginia — The University of Virginia was locked down and classes were cancelled on Monday morning as police searched for a student in connection with a fatal shooting the previous night. The university’s president confirmed in a letter to the community that three people were killed and two others wounded in the shooting on Sunday evening.

The suspect, identified as university student Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. by UVA President Jim Ryan, remained at large.

The warning for students and staff to shelter in place came late Sunday night following after a report of shots being fired on the campus. The university’s emergency management issued an alert on Twitter at 10:42 p.m. of an “active attacker firearm.”

“There has been a shooting on Culbreth Road and the suspect is at large and considered armed and dangerous,” Ryan said in a tweet, asking the university community to “please shelter in place.”

Ryan later sent out the letter with the message to the university community, saying he was “heartbroken to report that the shooting has resulted in three fatalities,” with two others being hospitalized and treated for unspecified wounds.

The UVA Police Department also posted a notice online saying multiple police agencies were searching for a suspect who was considered “armed and dangerous.”

Ryan said in his Monday morning letter that only designated essential staff should come to work.

A UVA student who was in her dormitory room near Culbreth Road said she heard six shots fired, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.

Jewish Community Campus, Site of 2014 Active Shooter, Installs SafeDefend Active Shooter Response System

    [ad_1]

The new system is a proactive solution in a crisis situation.

    Press Release

    updated: Oct 30, 2018

Two organizations at the Jewish Community Campus – Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy and the Jewish Community Center’s Child Development Center recently installed SafeDefend, a proactive crisis response system. This system uses multiple communication methods to alert security, faculty, students, and visitors within seconds of a crisis situation occurring. It also sends an immediate detailed message to local police.

The installation of this security notification system, which was made possible by a security grant from the Morgan Family Foundation, is one of the Jewish Community Campus’ newest security enhancements. The system was installed after a thorough review of the Campus’ security needs by Chuck Green, Community Wide Security Director for Kansas City’s Jewish community.

“The more information and the more quickly we get it, the safer we can keep our community. The SafeDefend system allows us to improve our response time and security awareness. My job is to make this community a safer, more secure place for everyone to enjoy, and this system is a critical tool in helping us achieve this goal.”

The security enhancements in Kansas City’s Jewish community come as a result of April 13, 2014, shooting at the Jewish Community Campus and nearby Village Shalom senior living center. Three individuals were killed in the shooting. Following the shooting, a Jewish Community Security Director position was immediately put into motion. Green came on board as the current director in February 2017. He has extensive experience in the security field, having served as a special agent for the U.S. Secret Service for more than 30 years.

Jeff Green, a former Kansas elementary school principal, developed the SafeDefend Active Shooter Response System to address the following priorities.

    1)     Ensuring law enforcement and onsite staff has detailed, real-time information about a crisis.

    2)     Reducing law enforcement response time.

    3)     Providing onsite staff with tools to effectively manage a crisis until help arrives.

About SafeDefend: The SafeDefend system uses multiple communication methods to communicate specific details of a crisis situation to local police and onsite staff. Police and staff are immediately notified of the specific location of the crisis in detailed text and/or email, a 911 call is placed, and audible sirens and warning lights notify onsite staff and visitors. Staff is provided with training and tools to survive the crisis until help arrives.

Faculty and staff will attend active shooter response training as well as SafeDefend system training on Friday, Nov. 2, from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. at the Jewish Community Campus.

  • Catholic School Installs Active Shooter Response System to Protect Students and Staff

Catholic School Installs Active Shooter Response System to Protect Students and Staff

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 10, 2018

St. Mary Catholic School in Newton, KS has installed the SafeDefend Active Shooter Response System. Responding to recent school shooting tragedies, Principal Philip Stutey and his safety team had vetted numerous approaches to increase the security of their students and staff. After much review, the decision to adopt the SafeDefend system was an easy one.

The SafeDefend Active Shooter Response System was developed by a former elementary principal. As a father of three and with 475 students under his watch, Jeff Green realized that schools were not addressing the four critical areas needed to protect students and staff. Those four priorities were:

    1)      reducing law enforcement response time

    2)      ensuring law enforcement and staff had real-time crisis information

    3)      providing the ability for staff to effectively manage the crisis until help arrives

    4)      realizing the biggest threat to our schools is already inside the building

SafeDefend utilizes multiple ways of communication in a crisis. Police and staff are immediately notified of the location of the crisis through text and email, a 911 call is placed, sirens notify all staff and visitors, and staff are provided with tools and training to survive the crisis until help arrives. Staff can utilize the tools to escape and evade, provide protection, and respond to trauma. SafeDefend is protecting students and staff in school districts across the country.

“Traditional methods for protecting our students and staff fail us. Current and former students are the most likely threats and will be in the building. Law enforcement and staff need critical, accurate information to perform effectively.” – Jeff Green, Founder and President of SafeDefend

Mr. Philip Stutey concurs: “SafeDefend supports our mission statement of meeting the needs of our school community spiritually, academically, emotionally and physically by providing the security needed in today’s world. Schools have safeguards against fire and weather issues but have been behind in protecting against an active intruder. No other company or product that we found offers the protection, law enforcement compatibility, empowerment of staff and peace of mind to our community like SafeDefend.”

St. Mary Catholic School is located in Newton, KS and is part of the Wichita, KS Diocese.
