Former CEO is finally facing the music for alleged sex trafficking and prostitution ring during his time at Abercrombie

Millennials: You’ll remember walking into Abercrombie & Fitch in the late ‘90s and early 2000s. Loud, thumping music, perfume so strong you could barely think straight, and posters of half-naked men were all part of the experience—and a desire to feel “cool.”

    David Turner/WWD/Penske Media—Getty Images

Mike Jeffries, Abercrombie’s former CEO, was behind that vision. And on Tuesday, he and his partner Matthew Smith were arrested in Florida in connection with sex trafficking-related charges, according to a federal indictment. The duo, along with an employee of theirs, James Jacobson, allegedly ran an international sex trafficking and prostitution ring from 2008 to 2015 that allegedly involved paying for secret sex with potentially dozens of men, including 15 unnamed victims.

The official indictment has been a long time coming. Last year, BBC released a documentary about Jeffries’ shady practices. The BBC investigation revealed that Jeffries and Smith allegedly used a middleman to find men to attend and participate in the sex events. Jeffries and Smith would allegedly engage in sexual activity with about four men at these events or “direct” them to have sex with one another, several attendees from the events told BBC. Jeffries’ personal staff dressed in Abercrombie uniforms and supervised the activity, according to the allegations, and staff members gave attendees envelopes filled with thousands of dollars in cash at the end of the events.

The middleman “made it clear that unless I let him perform oral sex on me, I would not be meeting with Abercrombie & Fitch or Mike Jeffries,” David Bradberry, who was introduced to Jacobson in 2010 when he was 23 years old, told BBC. An agent posing as a model recruiter introduced Bradberry to Jacobson, who described himself as the gatekeeper to the “owners” of Abercrombie and Fitch, according to the BBC investigation.

The federal indictment included related allegations and more.

    Jeffries’ shady past with Abercrombie

According to a 2006 interview with Salon, Jeffries wanted to make the 130-year-old retailer into the hearthrob teen clothing brand of the time, which he successfully did—but not without offending swaths of people. His interview pretty much sums up his marketing approach as only making it about “cool” people.

“Those companies that are in trouble are trying to target everybody: young, old, fat, skinny. But then you become totally vanilla,” Jeffries told Salon. “You don’t alienate anybody, but you don’t excite anybody, either.”

By 2006, Abercrombie & Fitch’s earnings had risen for 52 straight quarters, with annual profits of more than $2 billion. Plus, the company had opened hundreds of new brick-and-mortar stores and launched three new labels, including Hollister.

“But the marketing approach that made A&F into a financial success also made it an HR and PR nightmare,” according to NPR. Abercrombie’s approach to marketing ignited a response from women through mock ads and a boycott call from the American Decency Association. Black, Latino, and Asian American employees in 2004 filed a class-action lawsuit against the company alleging minority applicants were discouraged from applying.

In the early 2010s, Abercrombie started going south financially as a result of age discrimination and hiring practice lawsuits, and Jeffries’ 2006 interview with Salon started being circulated again and went viral. In 2013, Jeffries was named as the worst CEO of the year by TheStreet’s Herb Greenberg. To boot, CNBC’s Jim Cramer named him to his “Wall of Shame.”

“Since its early trading in 1996, Abercrombie has barely beaten the S&P 500. It has dramatically trailed the index over the past one-, three- and five-year marks,” Greenberg wrote in 2013. “The past year, in particular, has been an abomination, leading activist firm Engaged Capital to demand his ouster.”

By 2014, same-store sales slumped for 11 straight quarters and two of its subsidiary brands, Ruehl No.925 and Gilly Hicks, shut down just a few years after launch. Teens were just also over Abercrombie’s style at that point, and the shopping mall era was coming to a close. And in 2016, Abercrombie was deemed the most-hated retailer by the American Customer Satisfaction Index for its hypersexualized marketing and controversies.

    Abercrombie’s second wind

But as Abercrombie has distanced itself from Jeffries, the brand is making a major comeback after posting its best first-quarter earnings in company history this year. Abercrombie reported $1 billion in net sales, a 22% increase from 2023. Last year, its annual revenues were $5 billion.

This was an epic comeback for the brand. CEO Fran Horowitz took the helm in 2017, revamping stores and inventories as well as expanding sizes and introducing clothing for a variety of lifestyles.

“We moved from a place of fitting in to creating a place of belonging,” Horowitz said in a 2022 speech at the Fordham University Gabelli School of Business’ fifth annual American Innovation Conference.

I cover more sales in November than I can count on my fingers, but I’m honestly most excited about Abercrombie & Fitch’s Black Friday event. The rebrand has done wonders for the clothing company, and I, for one, have been on an AB&F kick and have no plans on stopping anytime soon. Give me all the trousers and sweaters, please!

I think we can all agree that the nostalgic Abercrombie of the past will always have a special place in our hearts. Matching (or mismatching) sweatpants and jackets tucked into UGG boots, anyone? Distressed skinny jeans and colorful v-neck tees, anyone? Nothing will ever replace our collective memories of rummaging around in darkly lit stores and swallowing clouds of cologne, but I’ve been to the new and improved Abercrombie stores and shopped online, and I’ll gladly take this fresh, ultra-chic iteration of the company. It’s evolved into a brand I and so many others can count on for trendy closet mainstays.

That’s why the Abercrombie Black Friday sale is such a big deal (no pun intended). The company has discounts at almost any given time, but rarely ones as good as these Black Friday markdowns. So, keep reading for all of the highly-anticipated details on this year’s Abercrombie Black Friday sale, including every item I have in my cart in case you need a little inspo.

When I was a kid, I was always baffled by how cartoon characters would wear the exact same outfits in every episode of a TV show. Minnie Mouse was always in her staple red polka-dot dress with a matching bow; Kim Possible was deeply committed to her pairing of denim cargo pants with a cropped green tank to match; and even Lizzie McGuire’s animated alter ego would don her pink tank, high-waisted jeans, and orange platform sandals time and time again. In my adolescent mind, I always just assumed these characters had a closet stocked full of the exact same clothing items — presumably, I put much more thought into the wardrobes of fictional characters than most kids.

Ironically, my closet as an adult has (albeit unintentionally) sort of started to mirror that concept in a lot of ways. The older I get, the less interested I am in experimenting with new clothes or wasting my money on styles that I’m not convinced will still be relevant next season. I’m more focused on creating an investment wardrobe with staple pieces that can grow with me — and more importantly, ones that I trust already look and feel great on me. The viral Abercrombie A&F Sloane Tailored Pants ($90) have proven to be such a style — after panic-buying them for a work event earlier this year, I’ve since expanded my closet to include the pants in three colors (and have no intention of stopping there). Ahead, I break down why exactly I love these comfortable pants so much and why I’d argue that they’re the ultimate wardrobe staple for anyone.

What I Like About the Abercrombie Sloane Tailored Pants

Given that I own them in three different colors — and have every intention of buying more — I think it’s fair to say there’s a lot to love about these tailored pants. First and foremost, I appreciate their breathable design. When it comes to formal wear, I’ve long felt that women’s clothing has lacked in the comfort department — the styles are often too stiff or heavy and noticeably more uncomfortable in comparison to men’s workwear pieces. Evidently, these Abercrombie pants are made from an everyday menswear fabric that’s designed to encompass everything great about a classic trouser pant, just in a more loose and flexible design. The material feels cooling on the body, almost like a spandex type of fabric. And despite their casual fit, the pants also look undeniably flattering while on, thanks to their tailored drape and pleated accents. I’m happy to wear them to a work event or just while lounging around the house; they truly work for every occasion.

I also appreciate how easy they are to dress up or down. For a relaxed daytime look, I can keep it simple with a cropped tank top, ballet flats, and a crossbody bag. For an elevated office look, it’s easy to team the pants with a bodysuit, an oversize blazer, and Mary Janes — the ensemble immediately makes me look polished and put together (even if I’m actually just running out the door). And then for a cool everyday outfit that can take me from the office to after-work drinks with my girls and beyond, I love keeping it simple with a body-con sweater and heels to match. The styling options are truly endless, which means I can really get my money’s worth with the formal pants.

    What’s Worth Noting

Abercrombie has a unique size guide that’s atypical to other fashion brands, so it’s recommended that you reference the guide first before placing your order or assuming you know your correct size based on past purchases. For example, I am 5’10” and will usually wear a medium size in the pants department (which usually translates to a size 4 or 6). Because Abercrombie offers a wide range of sizes and lengths (including extra short, short, regular, and long), I decided to order the size 28 long — which is labeled as being a small on the brand’s website — and found that the pants fit perfectly. Make sure to double check the brand’s size guide to ensure you get the best fit and length for your body type.

Who Are the Abercrombie Sloane Tailored Pants Best For?

If you (like me) are all about investing in more wardrobe essentials that can live in your closet for the longterm, then you need these Abercrombie pants in your life. I’ve worn them in such a diverse range of environments — traveling through the airport, attending a show at New York Fashion Week, grabbing dinner with my girlfriends (and receiving endless compliments from them on how much they similarly love the style on me), and even just running errands around my neighborhood. Through it all, I’ve never felt out of place, underdressed, and, most important of all, uncomfortable. The bottoms are so versatile, and thanks to their ultra-flattering design, I immediately feel more put together the moment I slip into them. Whether you are looking to expand your work wardrobe, are in desperate need of a new everyday pant, or simply want an excuse to add more Abercrombie pants to your closet (because why not?), these are a style you can wear for any season or occasion.

  • Abercrombie & Fitch is cool again | CNN Business

Abercrombie & Fitch is cool again | CNN Business

    New York
    CNN Business
     —

Abercrombie & Fitch has shed its perfume-filled mall stores, shirtless models and logo sweatshirts to win over Millennials and Gen Z.

    It’s working.

    Abercrombie

    (ANF)
said Monday that its women’s segment was on track to deliver its highest holiday sales period ever, and its men’s division was growing, too. The company lifted its fourth quarter and full-year sales and profit outlook, sending its stock up 9%.

“Abercrombie was a key destination for holiday shopping,” Neil Saunders, an analyst at GlobalData Retail, said in a note to clients Monday. “This a further sign that the brand has successfully ditched the baggage of its past.”

The brand, which has about 225 stores, plans to open around 10 Abercrombie stores a year over the next three years. This would bring Abercrombie closer to the 285 stores it had a decade ago.

Abercrombie was a staple of teen wardrobes during the 1990s and 2000s. Its sexualized advertising featuring young, shirtless male models turned the brand into a preppy status symbol for high schoolers. And it was proudly exclusionary, refusing to make size XL or XXL for years. (A new documentary on Netflix documents its culture of racism and discrimination.)

“We go after the cool kids. We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends,” former CEO Mike Jefferies said in 2006. “Are we exclusionary? Absolutely.”

But the brand alienated customers and fast-fashion stores like H&M emerged to win them over during and after the 2008 recession. Its sales slumped and by the time Jefferies left as CEO in 2014, the brand was toxic and had settled race and sex discrimination and harassment lawsuits.

Abercrombie tried to scrub its image of the Jefferies era. Soon after he left, brand said it would stop “sexualized marketing.”

It overhauled its marketing, stripped the old moose logo from its clothes and pulled back on the Fierce fragrance in its dimly lit stores. It also expanded its sizes.

“We are a positive, inclusive brand, with a nice sensibility, very different from what they encountered in the past,” Fran Horowitz, now Abercrombie’s CEO, said in 2016.

Today, Abercrombie’s stores are lighter than they once were and its clothes are looser. The brand has become known for its (logoless) basics, loungewear and jackets. Instead of trying to dress high schoolers for class, Abercrombie tries to outfit adults for everything from the gym to happy hour.

“They have a lot of different options for whatever you’re trying to do,” said Galenn Sekulich, 30, a fashion influencer on Instagram and TikTok who posts her shopping hauls from Abercrombie and other stores.

She said Abercrombie’s sizes did not fit her when she was younger, but its wider-cut Curve Love jean brand gives her an extra two inches in the hips.

“They made their sizing more true to size,” she said.

Abercrombie’s success comes at a moment of uncertainty for clothing stores and the broader retail industry. Shoppers have curtailed their discretionary spending and shifted from buying goods to services.

    Macy’s

    (M)
said Friday that it expects its holiday sales to be at the lower end of its forecast, while Lululemon

    (LULU)
warned Monday of lower fourth-quarter profit than it initially anticipated.
