HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — An hours-long standoff at a home in Kingwood ended Friday afternoon after the barricaded suspect set the house on fire.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said it later recovered a charred body and a rifle from the home in the 2000 block of Shadow Rock Drive.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said deputies arrived at the home around 10:30 a.m. to arrest the homeowner who was identified as 46-year-old Christian Andrew Peck.
Records show Peck had two warrants out– one for assaulting his then-wife and another for violating a protection order she had taken out.
Cellphone video shows deputies informing Peck of the warrants and instructing him to come out of the house.
Instead, deputies say the suspect remained inside the home, though they did not say for certain that person was Peck.
Around 2 p.m., deputies said the person inside the home started shooting at some of their equipment. Moments later, flames could be seen shooting from the house.
“We heard a loud bang, a couple other, like, shots, it sounded like, and then we saw the house was starting on fire and there were big flames and smoke everywhere,” neighbor Lawrence Hack said.
The fire laid waste to Peck’s house and ruptured a gas line.
“He made some comments that the individual that was (inside), that he was willing to burn the house down. He didn’t want his, I guess, spouse or former spouse to have the home,” Gonzalez said,
Records show Peck’s divorce was finalized on Aug. 12.
Court documents also show he was arrested in 2022 after police say he tried strangling his wife.
In 2023, online court records show he was given four years’ probation as part of a deferred adjudication deal. However, the deal was revoked, and a warrant was issued for Peck’s arrest two months later after prosecutors say he violated the terms of the deal.
Months later, a warrant was issued for his arrest in Montgomery County for allegedly violating his wife’s protection order by repeatedly messaging her. The arrest affidavit notes he had homicidal and suicidal tendencies and that he hadn’t been seen for the past six months.
The body found at Peck’s home is still pending official identification.
