Renck: Russell Wilson went from “Let’s Ride” to “Last Ride” with Broncos, revealing dangers of desperation

From “Let’s Ride” to “Last Ride” in two years.

Broncos coach Sean Payton filed for divorce from quarterback Russell Wilson on Monday. The only thing to figure out now is who gets custody of Thunder.

I was enjoying my return to The Denver Post, stomach full of lunch and face sore from laughs. Then the phone pinged. Any time there is an alert in early March about an NFL team, it means you’re not going to be home for dinner.

Wilson arrived in Denver in March 2022 determined to make history. This is not what he had in mind. The Broncos will take on an $85 million salary cap hit, divided over two seasons. No team has absorbed this much money for a mistake. As in, ever.

When the Broncos acquired Wilson, he was viewed as a savior — a former Super Bowl champion capable of returning Denver to relevance. Somehow, inexplicably, he made it worse. He won 11 games for roughly $124 million, a return-on-investment cringe not seen since the Rockies shipped off pitcher Mike Hampton in 2002.

It was not all Wilson’s fault, though his decision to reinvent himself as a pocket passer in 2022 under clown show coach Nathaniel Hackett and consistent failings in the red zone this past season left his fingerprints at the scene.

No one quite knows how the Broncos became a quarterback nadir, replacing the Cleveland Browns. Peyton Manning retired, walking into a life of commercials and coaching youth football, and there became a sobering new reality. The Broncos did not know how to find a replacement. John Elway had as much to do with it as anybody when he whiffed on Paxton Lynch, leading to long-armed reaches into the island of misfit toys that included Joe Flacco and Case Keenum. When general manager George Paton took over in 2021, he inherited the mess at the league’s most important position. Watching the Broncos spiral out of playoff contention in the final month, he surveyed the AFC landscape and determined a franchise quarterback was a must.

Tired of shopping for a couch on Craigslist, Paton wandered into IKEA and wasn’t going to take no for an answer. He traded four draft picks (two first-rounders, two second-rounders) and three starters (quarterback Drew Lock, tight end Noah Fant and defensive end Shelby Harris) to Seattle in exchange for Wilson.

The trade now serves as a cautionary tale of desperation. The Broncos gave up everything and ceded all power to Wilson in the relationship. Getting a revised contract was always part of the deal to waive his no-trade clause, though he will never play a down on his five-year, $242.5 million extension.

Wilson was given the green light to bring his entourage into the building and function as a pseudo-coach.

It was an epic failure. With Hackett complicit, Wilson sacrificed a season trying to prove he could run an offense that was designed for Aaron Rodgers, the Broncos’ original 2022 target before he received a new contract from the Green Bay Packers.

At one point in 2022, nobody was neutral in Broncos Country about Wilson. They disliked him. Or hated him.

When the Broncos hired Payton 13 months ago, he made it clear he was not married to the quarterback. He would give it a season. It only took 15 games and he went to Jarrett. Stidham, that is. He became the 13th starter since Super Bowl 50 and was as underwhelming as those before him.

It is important to remember Payton was not brought here to fix Wilson. He was brought here to fix the Broncos. That could not happen, he decided, with Wilson. The Broncos offense stank in the red zone and specifically in goal-to-goal situations. While Payton was rather ordinary on game day in his return after a one-year hiatus, he laid the blame on Wilson.

Russ went off script. He failed to call plays quickly enough. He forgot to send players in motion.

Payton, however, did the impossible and made Wilson a sympathetic figure when he benched him as it leaked out that the Broncos asked Wilson to adjust his contract during the bye week last October. Wilson’s $37 million in base salary in 2025 would have become guaranteed if he had remained on the roster past March 17. Denver wanted to move the date back. Wilson balked and explained in December that it was then that a benching was first broached. I don’t blame the Broncos for asking for relief, nor do I blame Wilson for refusing. The relationship was fraying at the seams.

When the season ended, Wilson held a morsel of hope that things could work out as the team publicly kept the door slightly ajar.

Wilson reached out to me last week, saying he “forever wished it was going (to happen) in Denver. I really wanted to win there.” His first year was a lost season for several reasons, including injuries — hamstring, shoulder, concussion. But he believed he played well last season, posting 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He was “grateful for long-lasting relationships,” but acknowledged it was time to move on from a “sad and disappointing” ending.

No one will ever question Wilson’s work ethic or passion. He was better, but not in the eyes of the one person who mattered.

Payton wants to run his offense — steeped in timing, execution and the ball coming out from the pocket. Scribbling outside the lines — Wilson’s strength — is not sustainable for the coach.

Aaron Rodgers returns to ‘Pat McAfee Show’ 1 day after being axed by host – National | Globalnews.ca

    Well, that didn’t take long.

Approximately 24 hours after announcing Aaron Rodgers would not appear on The Pat McAfee Show for the rest of the season, ESPN’s McAfee took an abrupt u-turn Thursday and welcomed the New York Jets quarterback back as a guest.

    Story continues below advertisement

On Wednesday, McAfee announced that his show was parting ways with Rodgers for the remainder of the season, in the wake of the football star saying some pretty controversial things about Jimmy Kimmel on the show recently.

“So ‘Aaron Rodgers Tuesday,’ Season 4, is done,” McAfee told his audience on Wednesday. “There could be a lot of people that are happy with that. Myself included, to be honest with you. The way it ended, it got real loud.”

“I am happy that he’s not going to be in my mentions going forward, which is great news,” the host added.

Looks like McAfee will likely have to deal with more of said mentions, however, as people across X (formerly Twitter) appeared to be either delighted or horrified with the footballer’s quick return to the broadcast.

Watchers of the show were taken aback by the about-face, but it might not be that surprising given McAfee’s wording in his initial announcement — he said that “Aaron Rodgers Tuesday” was ending, but the quarterback returned on a Thursday. Also, McAfee pledged that Rodgers would no longer appear during the regular season, and the NFL is technically entering postseason territory.

Also, McAfee tweeted Wednesday night that he hoped Rodgers would still come on his show to discuss “big events.”

And Rodgers did return to discuss the bombshell announcement that Bill Belichick is stepping down as coach of the New England Patriots after 24 seasons.

McAfee introduced Rodgers’ appearance by announcing him as “the last human that Bill Belichick talked to on the field as the New England Patriots’ head coach,” referencing the Jets’ final game of their disappointing season last week when they defeated the Patriots 17-3.

This time, however, his appearance was brief and Rodgers didn’t go off on any tirades about Jimmy Kimmel, Jeffrey Epstein or delve into debunked COVID-19 conspiracy theories.

    The Rodgers/Kimmel feud

Rodgers, 40, sparked a firestorm of fury last week after he suggested on McAfee’s show that Kimmel’s name will eventually surface on the list of Epstein’s associates.

Rodgers said there are many people, “including Jimmy Kimmel,” who do not want the contact list belonging to Epstein to be publicly released.

“I’ll tell you what, if that list comes out, I’ll definitely will be popping some sort of bottle,” added Rodgers, who appeared to be sitting inside a wine cellar.

A furious Kimmel responded shortly after, taking to X to re-share the clip and deny he’s ever met the late financier and convicted sex offender. He also threatened to take legal action against Rodgers.

“Your reckless words put my family in danger. Keep it up and we will debate the facts further in court.”

Kimmel, 56, also laced into the New York Jets player during his Monday night monologue on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!

“Either he actually believes my name was going to be on Epstein’s list — which is insane — or the more likely scenario is he doesn’t actually believe that and he just said it because he’s mad at me for making fun of his top knot and his lies about being vaccinated,” Kimmel said in his lengthy rant, where he also called Rodgers “hamster-brained” and joked the two ‘A’s’ on his report card were “both in the name Aaron.”

“It might be time to revisit that concussion profile, Aaron,” Kimmel said.

While McAfee issued an apology to Kimmel last week, Rodgers stopped short of doing so during Tuesday’s appearance on McAfee’s show and doubled down on COVID conspiracy theories.

“I said that a lot of people, and I’m quoting myself here, ‘a lot of people — including Jimmy Kimmel — are really hoping that [list] doesn’t come out,’ end quotes, that’s what I said,” Rodgers told McAfee.

“I was referring to the fact that if there is a list — which, again, this hasn’t come out yet, this was just a deposition — and there are names on it, then that would be the second time that a soft brain, junior college student, you know, wacko anti-vax, antisemite, purveyor, spreading misinformation, conspiracy theorists, MAGA — whatever other things have been said by him and other people in the media — would be right twice.”

    Story continues below advertisement

“Any type of name calling is ridiculous and I’m not calling him (a pedophile), and neither should you,” Rodgers continued.

Even after that, he said he didn’t care what Kimmel said about him, “but as long as he understands what I actually said and that I’m not accusing him of being on a list … I’m all for moving forward.”

Aaron Rodgers Eviscerates Woke ESPN After He's Banned For Suggesting Jimmy Kimmel Had Ties To Epstein

    Opinion

The New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is slamming woke ESPN after being banned from “The Pat McAfee Show” for the rest of the NFL season for suggesting that Jimmy Kimmel had ties to the late billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

    Rodgers Slams ESPN

Fox News reported that Kimmel threatened to sue Rodgers after he linked the liberal late night host to Epstein while appearing on “The Pat McAfee Show” last week.

“There’s a lot of people, including Jimmy Kimmel, who are really hoping that doesn’t come out,” Rodgers said. “I’ll tell you what, if that list comes out, I definitely will be popping some sort of bottle.”

While appearing on “The Pat McAffee Show” again on Tuesday, Rodgers said that the statement released afterwards by ESPN senior vice president production Mike Foss didn’t really help the situation.

“I don’t understand… a Mike Foss comment because he didn’t help out either,” Rodgers said. “And I’m going to quote Mike Foss. He said, ‘Aaron made a dumb and factually incorrect joke about Jimmy Kimmel. That should never have happened. We all realized that in the moment.’ Mike, you’re not helping. You’re not helping because I just read earlier exactly what I said,”

“I feel like I made a statement about not wanting to be on a list to come out … ‘We realized that in the moment?’ What are you talking about?” he added.

Rodgers Never Called Kimmel A Pedophile

Rodgers also pointed out that he never claimed that Kimmel was a pedophile.

“I was referring to the fact that if there’s a list, which again, this hasn’t come out yet,” Rodgers said. “There was just a deposition, and there are names on it, then that would be the second time that soft brained, junior college student, wacko, anti-vax, antisemite, purveyor, spreader of misinformation, conspiracy theorist, MAGA, whatever other things that have been said by him and other people in the media would be right twice.”

“Let me just say, that is the truth, No. 1. No. 2, I totally understand how serious an allegation of pedophilia would be,” he continued. “So, for him to be upset about that, I get it. Did you watch the quote because that’s exactly what I said? Verbatim. What I said on the show.”

Rodgers went on to say that he wasn’t “stupid” enough to accuse Kimmel of pedophilia.

“I’m not stupid enough, even though you think I’m an idiot, and you made a lot of comments about my intelligence. But I’m not stupid enough to accuse you of that with absolutely zero evidence, concrete evidence,” he stated. “That’s ridiculous.”

“I’m glad and I think we can agree on something is that, one, those crimes are heinous and, two, and I’m glad you’re not on a list because those who are on the list — and this is what I think we can agree on — that, at minimum, there should be an inquiry into their involvement,” he concluded. “Especially if they went to the island. And, at maximum, there should be an investigation into it.”

    Rodgers Gets Banned

The next day, McAfee announced that Rodgers would not be appearing on his show again for the rest of the NFL season.

“So ‘Aaron Rodgers Tuesday: Season 4’ is done,” McEAfee said on Wednesday, according to Daily Mail. “There’s gonna be a lot of people that are happy with that – myself included to be honest with you.”

“The way it ended, it got real loud,” he added. “I’m happy that’s not going to be in my mentions going forward, which is great news. Some of his thoughts and opinions though do p*** off a lot of people.”

Aaron Rodgers denies calling Jimmy Kimmel a pedophile, doesn’t apologize – National | Globalnews.ca

The drama between Jimmy Kimmel and Aaron Rodgers continues to drag on, with the quarterback refusing to apologize after he suggested that the talk show host’s name will eventually surface on the list of Jeffrey Epstein’s associates.

Rodgers returned to ESPN’s The Pat McAfee Show Tuesday, reports the Washington Post, apparently doubling down on debunked COVID conspiracy theories and refusing to apologize to Kimmel.

Last week, Rodgers, 40, made the claim about Kimmel , 56, during a guest spot on McAfee’s show.

Kimmel responded, taking to X to re-share the clip and deny he’s ever met Epstein.

“Dear Aasshole [sic]: for the record, I’ve not met, flown with, visited, or had any contact whatsoever with Epstein, nor will you find my name on any ‘list’ other than the clearly-phony nonsense that soft-brained wackos like yourself can’t seem to distinguish from reality,” Kimmel wrote.

“It might be time to revisit that concussion profile, Aaron,” Kimmel said.

McAfee also issued an apology to Kimmel last week, saying Rodgers’ comment about Epstein’s list was a “a s—t talk joke that can then become something that is obviously a very serious allegation.”

“Some things, obviously, people get very pissed off about, especially when they’re that serious allegations. So, we apologize for being a part of it,” he said. “I can’t wait to hear what Aaron has to say about it. Hopefully those two will just be able to settle this, not court-wise, but be able to chit chat and move along.”

On Tuesday, Rodgers seemed to walk back his comments but stopped short of issuing an apology.

“Any type of name calling is ridiculous and I’m not calling him (a pedophile), and neither should you,” Rodgers said on the show.

The feud between ABC’s late-night star and Rodgers, who regularly appears on the daily ESPN show, has proven embarrassing for The Walt Disney Co., the parent company to both television networks.

Rodgers criticized Mike Foss, an ESPN executive who oversees McAfee’s show, for saying that Rodgers had made “a dumb and factually inaccurate joke” about Kimmel.

“Mike, you’re not helping,” Rodgers said. “You’re not helping because I just read earlier exactly what I said. This is the game plan of the media and this is what they do: They try to cancel, you know, and it’s not just me…If you look at all the different people who’ve been censored from the internet, especially during COVID, the cancelling that went on, the censoring, using the government to try and censor people.”

Before addressing his specific comments, Rodgers had a lengthy preamble about his grudges against Kimmel, including jokes the comic has made about the quarterback’s anti-COVID-19 vaccination comments.

Does Aaron Rodgers Have a Wife? Meet His Girlfriend After Shailene Woodley

As one of the most famous NFL players in the past decade, it’s understandable why fans want to know about whether Aaron Rodgers has a wife and who his girlfriends have been over the years.

In an interview on The Pat McAfee Show podcast in September 2020, Rodgers, who is the current quarterback for the Green Bay Packers, revealed that he had a “new and increased love of life” thanks to some “changes” in his world (also known as his relationship with Shailene Woodley at the time.) “I have just a new and increased love of life,” he said at the time. “And I’ve made decisions and changes and habits that put me in a lot better headspace and there’s just a lot of things that have come together in my life over the last few months that have really been enjoyable and reminded me, given me perspective, on life and in football to view things through the most positive lens I possibly can.

He continued, “And that’s why I’m having so much fun and it starts with love. And then surrounding yourself with people that you really enjoy.”

Rodgers and Woodley broke up in 2021. But that doesn’t mean that the quarterback has stopped looking for love. Read on for what we know about whether Aaron Rodgers has wife and his girlfriends over the years.

No, Aaron Rodgers doesn’t have a wife. However, he was engaged to and almost married actress Shailene Woodley. The two were engaged for more than a year from February 2021 to April 2022.

Who’s Aaron Rodgers’ girlfriend? Meet who he’s dating ahead and see who the NFL player almost made his wife.

Aaron Rodgers and Mallory Edens are dating, TMZ confirmed on January 9, 2023. Edens is the daughter of Milwaukee Bucks owner, Wes Edens, who is also co-owner of the Premier League club, Aston Villa. Rodgers is also a minority owner of the Bucks. Edens is also a model and a social media influencer with more than 200,000 Instagram followers. She’s represented by Women Management LA, Ford Models and One Management. Rodgers and Edens were first linked in December 2022 when they were photographed together a Bucks game against the Los Angeles Lakers.

“It’s more than friends, but it’s casual. Nothing serious at all,” a source told People in January 2023. “He’s not looking to rush into anything. It’s low-key for now.” The insider continued, “But it’s definitely a very close friendship that is evolving,” the source said. “He’s not going to do something as quick as Shailene [Woodley]. Live and learn.”

    Shailene Woodley (2020 – 2022)

Aaron Rodgers and Shailene Woodley dated fro 2020 to 2022. News broke of their relationship in February 2021. “They have kept things private and low key,” a source told E! News at the time. The insider revealed that Rodgers and Woodley were in a long-distance relationship early in their romance because the NFL player lived in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where he was “very focused on his [NFL] season.”

At the NFL Honors broadcast that month, Rodgers confirmed that he and Woodley were engaged after he thanked his “fiancee” in his speech. “It’s an honor to win this award for the third time. 2020 was definitely a crazy year filled with lots of change and growth, some amazing memorable moments. 180 straight days of having my nose hair scraped, playing for very little fans or no stands the entire season,” he said. “I got engaged.” A source told People at the time that Rodgers’ friends weren’t surprised he was so quick to propose. “They are very happy together,” the source said. “It’s not surprising he proposed so fast. When you know, you know, right?”

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2021, Woodley explained that her and Rodgers were able to keep their relationship a secret for so long because of the current health crisis. “You could travel, but you had masks on,” she said. “There was a sense of anonymity that otherwise I don’t think we would have had. We were really able to get to know one another the way we wanted to get to know one another and not have any noise or chaos around us.”

People confirmed that Rodgers and Woodley had broken up in February 2022, a year after their engagement. “It was an amicable split; it just wasn’t working,” the source said. “They’re very different people with busy careers and there were obstacles that they couldn’t surmount. They will remain friendly; there’s no bad blood and no drama. It just didn’t work out for them.”

A source told In Touch at the time that the couple split because Woodley felt “neglected” by Rodgers in favor of his career. “While Shailene is supportive of Aaron’s career, he put football first and they were barely spending any time together,” the insider said. “She felt he neglected their relationship. Neither of them was happy.” A second source also told In Touch that Rodger is an “independent guy” and “got cold feet” about his engagement to Woodley. “[They] couldn’t make it work,” the source said. “There were too many obstacles. They’re both adults and decided to part amicably.”

Another source told Us Weekly at the time Woodley and Rodgers hadn’t “been spending any time together” in the weeks up to their split because of how “focused” Rodgers is on his career with the Greenbay Packers. “Shailene has been super busy with work,” the insider said. “Everything was so different during lockdown, and they had been living in their bubble. Friends of Shailene didn’t believe Aaron is the best match for her.” A second source told the magazine that Woodley and Rodgers’ different interests also played a part in their split.

“They certainly had their differences and ultimately their relationship didn’t work,” the insider said. “They thought were a good match for each other in the beginning but the more they got to know each other they realized their careers, their interests [and] their political views weren’t aligned.” The insider also added that Rodgers is “very passionate about his football career,” which affected how Woodley felt in their relationship. “He was focusing more on the sport than on future plans with Shailene,” the insider said.

The split also came after a source told People in December 2021 that Woodley and Rodgers have a “different, non-traditional relationship.” The insider also denied rumors at the time that the couple had split. “Shailene and Aaron are still together. It’s not odd they don’t post about each other on their birthdays in that sense, and are very private about things,” the source said.

The breakup also came after Rodgers, who previously claimed that he was “immunized,” came under fire in November 2021 after he tested positive for COVID-19 and revealed that he was actually unvaccinated. “I realize I’m in the crosshairs of the woke mob right now, so before my final nail gets put in my cancel culture casket, I think I’d like to set the record straight on so many of the blatant lies that are out there about myself right now,” he said on The Pat McAfee Show at the time. “First of all, I didn’t lie in the initial press conference. During that time, it was a very — witch hunt that was going on across the league, where everybody in the media was so concerned about who was vaccinated, and who wasn’t, and what that meant, and who was being selfish, and who would talk about it, and what it meant if they said it was a personal decision.”

He continued, “Had there been a follow-up to my statement that I had been immunized, I would have responded with this: I would have said, ‘Look, I’m not some sort of anti-vax flat-Earther. I am somebody who is a critical thinker.’ You guys know me. I march to the beat of my own drum. I believe strongly in bodily autonomy and the ability to make choices for your body.”

During the interview, Rodgers claimed that he didn’t get vaccinated because he’s “allergic” to an ingredient in the Pzifer and Moderna vaccines. (He didn’t specify the ingredient.) He also noted that he opted against the Johnson and Johnson vaccine because he had “heard of multiple people who had had adverse events” after they received the vaccine. ESPN also reported at the time that Rodgers asked the NFL about “alternate treatments” he could have instead of the vaccine.

A source told People in January 2022 that Woodley and Rodgers have “agreed to disagree” on several topics including politics. “They are not talking about their politics, and they never really have,” the insider said. “They disagreed on a lot of things. Early on, they decided to agree to disagree about things and not debate them.” The source continued, “She is not someone whose mind you can change, so Aaron hasn’t even tried.”

    Danica Patrick (2017 – 2020)

Aaron Rodgers was first linked to professional racecar driver Danica Patrick in December 2017. In an interview on Jenny McCarthy’s SiriusXM show in May 2018, Patrick recalled how she met Rodgers at the 2012 ESPY Awards. “We both remember meeting each other, it was quick,” she said. “I got his email address and I remember thinking to myself, ‘Oh, not a phone number? Just an email address?’” In an interview with E! News in 2019, Patrick revealed whether she and Rodgers had talked about marriage. “Look, there’s no guarantees in life, but as long as you have that intention, that’s what matters, right?”

The two bought a $28 million mansion in Malibu, California, together in 2019 before their split the following year in 2020. In a statement to Us Weekly in July 2020, a representative for the racecar driver confirmed that Patrick and Rodgers were “no longer together.”

    Olivia Munn (2014 – 2017)

    Olivia Munn, Aaron Rodgers
    Image: Lionel Hahn/Sipa USA.

Aaron Rodgers and Olivia Munn dated for three years from 2014 to 2017. A source told Us Weekly in June 2017 that Munn was the reason for Rodgers’ estrangement from his family, including season 11 Bachelorette winner Jordan Rodgers. “Aaron is the one that has pulled away from the family, not the reverse,” the insider said. “When he got together with Olivia Munn, his family told them they didn’t trust her and thought she wasn’t with him for the right reasons. That made him furious, and he ended up choosing Olivia over his family.” Munn and Rodgers split in 2017.

In an interview with SiriusXM’s Radio Andy in 2018, Munn shut down rumors that she was the reason Rodgers was estranged from his family. “Before he and I started dating, he hadn’t spoken to the parents and one brother for, like, eight months before we started dating,” Munn said at the time. She continued, “They had a really nice conversation, then they started coming out my first year when I was in Green Bay in 2014. I just think it’s really important to try to mend things in a family, and I encouraged that.”

Aaron Rodgers was first linked to the Gossip Girl alum Jessica Szohr in 2011. The two split soon after but reunited for a short time in 2014. A source told Us Weekly at the time that Rodgers and Szohr first broke up due to their busy schedules. “They broke up because her schedule was crazy for a while and they just couldn’t stay together in that situation but now they have been spending their free time together and things feel good,” the insider said. “They fell right back into it.”

  • Jimmy Kimmel Slams Aaron Rodgers’ Claim About Jeffrey Epstein Connection: ‘Your Reckless Words Put My Family in Danger’

Jimmy Kimmel Slams Aaron Rodgers’ Claim About Jeffrey Epstein Connection: ‘Your Reckless Words Put My Family in Danger’

Jimmy Kimmel has responded to Aaron Rodgers‘ comments about the late-night host’s possible connection to the list of Jeffrey Epstein‘s associates.

During an appearance on the “Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday, the New York Jets quarterback suggested that Kimmel was among those named on the Epstein list, saying, “There’s a lot of people, including Jimmy Kimmel, really hoping that doesn’t come out.”

The names of over 150 associates of the late sex offender Epstein are set to be revealed following a court order from a federal judge in December.

“I’ll tell you what, if that lists comes out, I definitely will be popping some sort of bottle,” Rodgers added.

Kimmel took to X/Twitter to dismiss Rodgers’ claim about his connection to Epstein, writing, “Dear Aasshole: for the record, I’ve not met, flown with, visited, or had any contact whatsoever with Epstein, nor will you find my name on any ‘list’ other than the clearly-phony nonsense that soft-brained wackos like yourself can’t seem to distinguish from reality. Your reckless words put my family in danger. Keep it up and we will debate the facts further in court.”

Back in March 2023, Kimmel mocked Rodgers for discussing the Epstein list and UFOs during a February appearance on the “Pat McAfee Show.”

“Did you hear about the Epstein client list about to be released?” Rodgers said. “There’s some files that have some names on it that might be getting released pretty soon.”

Kimmel played the clip of Rodgers on his eponymous late-night show, saying “it might be time to revisit the concussion protocol, Aaron.” He also referred to the quarterback as a “tin-foil hatter.”

  • Mike Lupica: Zach Wilson is trying to write his own comeback story with the Jets

Mike Lupica: Zach Wilson is trying to write his own comeback story with the Jets

The Jets now play a December game in their division against a real contender, which means the Dolphins, and the problem is that it matters a lot more to the Dolphins than it does to them.

It wasn’t supposed to be this way, of course, back when it all started for the Jets on that Monday night against the Bills; when the Jets suffered their biggest loss of the season on a night when they actually won an overtime game. When they looked at the schedule then and saw the Dolphins in Miami the second-to-last Sunday before Christmas, they had to think first place might be on the line, but for both teams and not the home team.

Now the Jets play this game with the quarterback who wasn’t supposed to be their quarterback, near the end of a season that was supposed to be so full of possibilities because Aaron Rodgers had come to town, before he got hurt and long before all the crazy comeback talk, comeback talk about this season even after an Achilles injury, as Rodgers tried to convince Pat McAfee and the rest of us that he was some kind of football Lazarus.

Only now the comeback to talk about, with four games left, is about the quarterback who wasn’t supposed to be the Jets quarterback, Zach Wilson, who last week threw a whole lot of Lazarus and whole lot of game at the Houston Texans. Wilson, who had been benched for Tim Boyle, got his job back and last Sunday played the game of his life, which is actually saying plenty in the same season when he and the Jets beat the Eagles, the best win by so much this season for either the Jets or the Giants it’s not even close.

Now he tries to do it again, against another first-place team, the one from his own division this time. It is why that is the game to watch Sunday and he’s the quarterback to watch, even with everybody’s current cutlet obsession about a nice local guy named Tommy DeVito. DeVito is the better story right now, as he and the Giants once again draw a team, the Saints, that doesn’t have a winning record (the Giants’ wins this season have come against teams whose combined record is 13-26). Wilson, though, showed last Sunday that he has it in him to be a better quarterback.

It doesn’t mean he will do it again, or will ever turn out to be the player Joe Douglas thought he was drafting out of Brigham Young. It doesn’t change the fact that the Jets have done everything except hire skywriters to tell the kid they don’t want him past this season. As fast as Wilson is in the open field, it may turn out in the end that the game is too fast for him, despite the kind of arm he showed you against the Eagles and then against the Texans, when the Jets waxed a team that had their own No. 2 overall pick, CJ Stroud, at quarterback.

But Wilson, who had been counted out again, just because counting him out long ago became one of the national pastimes around here, wasn’t just the numbers he threw at the Texans and at us on a rainy and windy Sunday when you thought we might end up with the kind of 3-0 game the Vikings and Raiders played later. It wasn’t just that he threw an almost perfect game in the second half (despite a bad fumble) and ended up with 27-for-31 and over 300 passing yards that got him named AFC Offensive Player of the Week.

It was something else, and something more, last Sunday:

Wilson was really fun to watch. For all the nice moments DeVito gave us against the Packers, especially the end, the Packers did everything except Christmas-wrap that game for him and for the Giants on Monday night. It was different with Wilson, who gave you a game last Sunday. Now we do see if he can do it again, against a first-place team like the Dolphins, but a first-place team whose defense got lit up by Will Levis and the Titans at the same time the Giants were playing the Packers.

Here is one of the things Wilson said about what the Jets — finally — did on offense:

“As an offense, everybody was clicking. Receivers were getting open and they were making the 50/50 plays. Hack [Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett] was calling an awesome game. The O-Line was giving me more than enough time to sit back there and make plays…When it’s truly 11 guys and you do your job on the field, those guys, they did it. The quarterback gets more credit than it’s deserved, but it is truly an offensive unit that went out there and I thought everyone went out there and played well and how can we get there again as an offense is the key.”

Dec. 11, 2023: Got to be startin’ somethin’

    New York Daily News

Back page for Dec. 11, 2023: No. 1 QB again, Zach lifts Jets, and himself off scrap heap for stunner over Texans. Zach Wilson takes over as starting quarterback again and leads Jets to shocking 30-6 upset of Texans at rainy Meadowlands Sunday afternoon.

Getting there again as an offense isn’t just a key. It’s everything for the Jets as they try to make this look like the season they thought they were going to have, even without No. 8.

Is there still drama around Zach Wilson? There has been since he was drafted. Some of it he created himself, with those comments he made after the Patriots game the season before this one. Some of it is because he was the second overall pick and has been such a disappointment to here. A lot of it is because he is the quarterback of a New York team, which is like having a career in the place Looie Carnesecca used to call Macy’s window even if he does play his home games in Jersey.

But even before he showed up as big as he did against the Texans and played the kind of game that Rodgers was supposed to play for the Jets this season, he read and heard that he didn’t want his old job back, as if we were actually supposed to believe he was afraid to come out of the locker room. Maybe it was because the Jets, who aren’t good at keeping secrets but tremendous at looking for cover, really have made it clear they don’t want him past this season.

Nobody knows if he is ever going to be a frontline starter in professional football, or if he is going to end up being a backup who occasionally causes the crowd to go wild the way DeVito is doing that at the moment for the Giants.

But know this: Wilson has been terrific off the field this season. Last Sunday he was as tough as he’s ever been in the pros against the Texans, after a career where the Jets have let him down a lot more than he’s let them down, at almost every turn.

Maybe he won’t do it again against the Dolphins. I hope he does.

STANTON SLIMMING DOWN AGAIN, NBA STILL NEEDS LEBRON & IT’S TIME FOR DRAYMOND TO GO …

Giancarlo Stanton is slimming down before next season, and stop me if you’ve heard that one before.

As we move up on Christmas Day games in the NBA, and with more than a quarter of the season already in the books, here’s what we still don’t know:

Whether the Nets or the Knicks are the better team.

    Speaking of basketball shows?

LeBron, as he moves up on his 39th birthday, is still the best one of all.

And the league needs him as much as ever.

    Because guess what?

If pro basketball was as strong as Adam Silver wants it to be, and people still pretend that it is, they wouldn’t need to trick it up with an in-season tournament.

If you’re keeping score at home, Shohei Ohtani just signed for 70 times more money than George Steinbrenner paid for the Yankees.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto really is the best pitcher pretty much nobody has ever seen.

Has there ever been three better hitters at the top of any batting order — I mean, ever — than Mookie Betts, Shohei, Freddie Freeman?

Or ever been three former MVPs at the top of anybody’s order?

Juan Soto didn’t exactly sound as if he sees himself ending up in Monument Park someday, did he?

Once Draymond Green blew up the Warriors’ chance at another title, when he got himself suspended from a Game 5 in the NBA Finals against LeBron and the Cavs when the Warriors were ahead three games to one and going home to clinch.

Now he tries to blow up an entire season.

At least the guy is consistent.

You know what the deal ought to be with Draymond?

    He goes.

And before the Warriors and the team does some kind of welfare check on him as a way of shortening his suspension, everybody go back and look at his explanation of the play — and backhand punch — that got him suspended.

Because he sure sounded pretty calm and pretty rational to me.

I’m sorry, but whose idea was it to make Chargers coach Brandon Staley answer on-camera questions at halftime when his team was getting waxed 42-0 on Thursday night?

Rodon better be better in 2024.

    Just putting that out there.

For the last time, it wasn’t the refs’ job to tell Kadarius Toney to line up properly.

If it’s true that Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie are going to play Danny Ocean’s parents in an “Ocean’s 11” prequel, I’m in.

Red Sox fans are starting to talk about 2018 the way they used to talk about 1918, if it’s any consolation to Yankee fans.

    Anybody heard from David Stearns?

Guy’s only big move so far is Carlos Mendoza.

I still think of “Die Hard” as a Christmas movie.

  • Jets will start Tim Boyle at QB for second consecutive week vs. Falcons

Jets will start Tim Boyle at QB for second consecutive week vs. Falcons

Gang Green changed quarterbacks ahead of Friday’s game hoping for an offensive spark.

That didn’t happen and the Dolphins rolled past the Jets 34-13.

However, Tim Boyle will get another opportunity to lead the Jets offense in Week 13 against the Atlanta Falcons.

“We’re giving Timmy another shot to roll next week,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said. “Obviously, there’s things that he could have done better, there are things that he had no control over and I know he battled out there.

“We were able to get to certain calls that we were hoping to do. We were able to execute a lot of the different things that we wanted to execute, it just didn’t come to full fruition.”

In his first start in two seasons and the fourth of his career, Boyle completed 27 of 38 passes for 179 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. He was also sacked seven times, a direct result of the Jets having to use their eighth different offensive line combination in 11 games.

Boyle previously started three games for the Detroit Lions in 2021 when Jared Goff was injured.

The Jets’ offense has been abysmal after Aaron Rodgers’ Achilles’ tear in Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills. Zach Wilson started the next nine games until he was benched for Boyle during the third quarter against Buffalo in Week 11 after continued poor play and holding onto the football too long. This season, Wilson has thrown for 1,944 yards with six touchdowns and seven interceptions.

The only other QB option for the Jets is Trevor Siemian, who was recently signed to the active roster after the team signed him to the practice squad in late September. When asked about Siemian possibly starting, Saleh said, “I’m not there yet.”

The Jets (4-7) are currently on a four-game losing streak. The team’s inability to find the end zone is a significant reason for the downslide.

Gang Green has just 10 offensive touchdowns in 11 games. That has led to the Jets ranking last in total yards (262.2) and 30th in points per game (14.8). The Jets are also last in the NFL in third down conversion (24.1%) and red zone touchdown percentage (28%).

The Jets hoped hiring offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett would improve the offense, but their yards and points per game are worse than a season ago when the team finished 7-10. However, Hackett will continue to be the offensive play caller.

“When you look at it all — and again, it’s a little bit of everything,” Saleh said after Friday’s loss. “Whether the calls could be better, whether the execution can be better, whether our one-on-one battles could be better — it’s taking advantage of the situations we have when we get them.

“Do I think play caller will fix that? I don’t know. I don’t have an answer for you on that one.”

Hackett’s relationship with Rodgers is likely the primary reason he will remain the offensive play caller moving forward. With a headset, Rodgers watched the Jets lose to the Dolphins from the sideline. After his Achilles tear, Rodgers initially rehabbed in California. But now, Rodgers will join the team full-time in New Jersey for the season’s final six games.

“He is in the building,” Saleh said.

There has been chatter about Rodgers returning to the field before the end of the season. However, with the Jets playoff chances on life support along with the offensive line issues, that may not happen.

The Jets could open Rodgers’ practice window sometime in December, assuming doctors clear him.

“With regard to practice, I don’t have anything for you guys on that,” Saleh said. “Like I said, when we get a doctor’s note that says he is cleared, he will be cleared for practice.”

    DOLPHINS SLAM TURF AT METLIFE

The Dolphins may have won a key divisional game against a bitter rival on Black Friday, but they lost one of the better defensive players in the process.

Linebacker Jaelan Phillips tore his Achilles and will miss the rest of the 2023 season. He registered 43 tackles and 6.5 sacks for the Dolphins this season.

“It was emotional,” Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said. “I think that’s one of the special things about this particular team, is there’s a lot of shared journeys. Everybody sees what he puts in on a daily basis and everybody knows how bad he wants to take steps in his game and be absolutely great in this league, which he has and we’ve been very proud of him the whole season.”

Following Phillips’ injury, the conversation turned to the controversial turf at MetLife Stadium. So far this season, Phillips, Rodgers and Jets defensive tackle Al Woods have torn their Achilles on the same field.

MetLife did change their turf field last offseason, going from slit film to an updated version of FieldTurf. The change was supposed to be a safer alternative, but that has not been the case.

Many around the league, including Eagles cornerback Darius Slay and Ravens coach John Harbaugh, have previously criticized the MetLife Stadium turf.

“Since being in the league, I’ve heard that field is trash,” Dolphins safety Jevon Holland said. “I don’t know the statistics or anything like that, but I do know turf increases the chance of getting hurt.”

Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert was also vocal about MetLife’s playing surface after seeing his teammate suffer a season-ending injury.

“No player wants to go down with a significant injury,” Mostert said. “You saw what happened to Rodgers, very first game within the first series. It just sucks. We got to do something about this turf and this playing surface because, obviously, it’s still a major problem. It just has to change.”

  • Vikings QB Kirk Cousins, a possible Jets target, not expected to waive no-trade clause: report

Vikings QB Kirk Cousins, a possible Jets target, not expected to waive no-trade clause: report

Don’t expect Kirk Cousins to replace Aaron Rodgers as the Jets’ quarterback this season.

Cousins, who can become a free agent after the year, is not expected to waive his no-trade clause and is therefore likely to remain with the Minnesota Vikings through the end of the season, ESPN reported Sunday.

The 35-year-old Cousins has been the subject of trade speculation given his contract status, the Vikings’ 1-4 start and the team’s recent loss of superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson for at least a month due to a hamstring injury.

Cousins failed to defuse the rumors last week when he was asked if he would consider waiving his no-trade clause before the Oct. 31 trade deadline.

“I’m just very focused on the Bears and going 1-0 this week,” Cousins said. “Anything else is just not worth my time or energy or attention.”

The Jets have frequently been linked as a trade destination for Cousins after Rodgers, 39, suffered a season-ending Achilles tear on the team’s fourth offensive snap of Week 1. The offseason acquisition of Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP, gave the Jets aspirations for a Super Bowl title, but the team entered Sunday just 2-3 with Zach Wilson under center.

The Jets signed veteran Trevor Siemian to their practice squad last month but are yet to make a splash move at quarterback since Rodgers went down. Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who has also been speculated as  a trade target, was carted off the field Sunday after suffering an ankle injury against the Baltimore Ravens in London.

Despite the Vikings’ disappointing start, Cousins has played well this season. His 13 touchdown passes through five games led the NFL, while his 1,498 passing yards ranked third.

Without Jefferson, the reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year, Cousins’ top pass-catching options include first-round rookie Jordan Addison and tight end TJ Hockenson, whom the Vikings traded a second-round pick for last year.

For Cousins to consider a midseason trade, it would likely take a contender that runs an offensive scheme he’s comfortable with losing their starting quarterback, according to ESPN.

Cousins’ future with Minnesota beyond this season remains unclear. If the Vikings continue to lose and end up with a high draft pick, they could consider selecting their quarterback of the future. The 2024 NFL Draft is considered a strong one for quarterbacks, with USC’s Caleb Williams and North Carolina’s Drake Maye eligible to declare.

  • Bob Raissman: Without Aaron Rodgers the Jets still have plenty of prime time appeal

Bob Raissman: Without Aaron Rodgers the Jets still have plenty of prime time appeal

In the wake of his season-ending ruptured Achilles, Aaron Rodgers left the Jets with a basket full of prime time, nationally televised games as well as multiple tilts in the attractive 4:25 p.m. “late” window.

To be exact: Three more prime time games that cannot be flexed, four 4:25 p.m. contests (including Sunday’s tango with Dallas), and the new 3 p.m. Nov. 24 Black Friday contest vs. Miami on Prime Video. That matchup will also air on “free” over-the-air TV in the home team markets.

The NFL Schedule Gnomes were drooling over Rodgers, a future Hall of Famer, playing in the nation’s largest media market. That’s why they gave the Jets deluxe TV treatment. Before even playing one down, Rodgers, a media magnet, provided a combination of leadership and spirituality that drastically elevated the perception of the Sad Sack franchise and its even sadder, kvetching fan base.

Pulled from the wreckage of the Rodgers disaster are these eye-popping TV jewels. But if it were possible, would the NFL, and its millions of fans, be better off if commissioner Roger Goodell could suddenly proclaim the Rodgers-less Jets Not Ready for Prime Time?

That would be a large mistake. For, in many respects, the product Robert Wood Johnson IV, Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh will bring to Dallas on Sunday is equally as fascinating as a Rodgers-led Gang Green. No, the Jets won’t have any player with the star power of Rodgers, especially his replacement, the erratic Zach Wilson.

What Gang Green has is a number of irresistible story lines that should appeal to a national audience, especially after their improbable Monday night win. Now, for their next act, the Jets will attempt to pull themselves out of a mess on the biggest of TV stages. In some respects, this is the football version of rubber-necking on the side of the NFL’s television highway.

Besides the enormous life-without-Aaron storyline, The Jets have enough personalities (Quinnen Williams, Ahmad ‘Sauce’ Gardner, Garret Wilson, Breece Hall) who should bring big-time eyeballs to the screens and keep the buzz surrounding the team alive.

Once the Jets landed on Rodgers, the NFL set the foundation for a green-and-white summer by “forcing” the Jets to appear on HBO’s “Hard Knocks.” The show gave Rodgers and the Jets a national platform. Fans from coast-to-coast got to know them.

The Jets continued on the national track opening on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” against Buffalo in the Meadowlands. Rodgers was over-and-out after four plays in the Jets first series. But Gang Green won dramatically in overtime with Hard Knocks “star” Xavier Gibson unleashing a 66-yard punt return for the winning score.

Apparently, no one bailed when Rodgers was officially ruled out of the game. Just over 22.6 million viewers tuned in making Bills-Jets making it the most watched ESPN “MNF” tilt.

They watched while Wilson tried to start picking up the pieces of his own career. The quarterback, who had no pressure coming into the season, is back to dealing with the harsh characterizations, on and off the field, that regularly come his way.

Wilson is no Buzz Machine. And things could go south in a hurry, but his story, and the intrigue surrounding a team that instantly lost its leader for the season, makes the Jets a compelling watch.

    At least until Thanksgiving.

    DOES ROMO STILL LOVE ZACH?

In terms of broadcasters, Zach Wilson found a soft place to land Sunday against the hard charging Cowboys defense.

CBS’ Tony Romo will be working the game with Jim Nantz. In the summer of Wilson’s rookie season, Romo believed Wilson’s upside was over the moon.

“I think Zach Wilson is going to be in the discussion as one of the top three to five quarterbacks [in the NFL] very quickly. Within the next couple of years,” Romo said at the time. “I think you’re going to see him rise. I think he’s unbelievable. His ceiling is so high.”

As he watches Wilson perform Sunday, it will be interesting to hear how much Romo has altered his opinion of the Jets quarterback.

    MSG’S BACKUP PLAN

With the MSG Network recently releasing its 2023-24 Knicks schedule, thoughts turned to the legend Walt (Clyde) Frazier, 78, and his broadcast future.

Early in the summer, Frazier said he wants to cut back on road tilts, but is all-in on yakking during home games. NBA TV sources say MSGN brass is considering a few different voices to fill-in for Frazier, including Jeff (Shecky) Van Gundy and Mark Jackson.

Watching both Jax and JVG, in a combo or singularly, reunite with their former ESPN partner Mike Breen, would not only be great TV but tremendous theater as well.

In June, obviously believing great broadcast teams grow on trees, ESPN’s Kangaroo Court, in what it called an economic move, fired both JVG and Jax.

    BANK ON CARL

There is no NFL analyst as consistently reliable as Giants radio voice Carl Banks.

The former Giants linebacker, who works with Bob Papa, did not wait until Dallas got too far ahead of the Giants, in the 40-0 blowout, before he started questioning Brian Daboll’s play calling.

Banks wondered why the coach went away from plays that were scripted in the opening series. In nine plays (mostly runs by Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones) the Giants moved the ball to the Cowboys 8-yard line before things started falling apart.

    AROUND THE DIAL

Many moons ago, Joe Benigno cornered the market on the downtrodden (Jets/Mets) fan persona. He flaunted it. Not that he gave a damn but his undying allegiance left his credibility in question. Now, Joey B., has competition. Since the coming and going of Aaron Rodgers, ESPN’s Mike Greenberg and WFAN’s Brandon Tierney (Did you see his Animal House-like rant, aka “Bluto’s Big Speech?”) have made this latest Jets “tragedy” more about THEM than the team. The moaning and whining about THEIR Jetsian misfortune suggested someone in need of a Pity Party. Unfortunately, on this occasion, it also left the perception they are more fan boys than serious broadcasters. … While SNY’s Mets postgame show can’t contractually be pre-empted, it needed to be Monday night. As soon as the Jets won in OT, we switched to SNY for the Jets postgame, only to see Gary Apple and Todd Zeile discussing Arizona’s 4-3 win over the Mets. The closest SNY got to the Jets was a crawler saying the postgame was coming up next. Couldn’t wait. Went back to ESPN for its MNF postgame. That was too slow moving. Put on 98.7 and, fortunately, caught the Main Event, Robert Saleh’s press conference. … Is he kidding? Or is Christopher (Mad Dog) Russo really ticked? Doggie said he thought he was going to be a participant in Stephen A. Smith’s Wednesday 28-minute interview with Roger Goodell on “First Take.”  And Dog was not happy when production staffers basically threw him a stick and told him to chase it. There were only two seats on the set — one for SAS and one for the commissioner. Russo knows when you dish it out you’ve got to take it. Russo, rightfully so, has been tough on Goodell. The Dog should not expect any niceties in return. … In the middle of the participants fawning over new “The NFL Today” cast member J.J. Watt, Phil Simms delivered a sarcastically funny line. He quoted an NFL type who said Dak Prescott just “can’t throw” more interceptions. Simms: “That’s ground breaking stuff.” Even Bill Cowher laughed.

  • Aaron Rodgers speaks out for first time since his season-ending injury:

Aaron Rodgers speaks out for first time since his season-ending injury:

Aaron Rodgers has spoken out publicly for the first time since his devastating, season-ending Achilles injury. The star quarterback was hurt less than four plays into the New York Jets’ debut game against the Buffalo Bills at MetLife Stadium.

Rodgers, 39, expressed gratitude toward everyone who reached out to him, and reflected as he begins his recovery process.

“I’m completely heartbroken and moving through all of the emotions, but deeply touched and humbled by the support and love,” he wrote in an Instagram post Wednesday. “Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I begin the healing process today.”

“The night is darkest before the dawn. And I shall rise yet again,” Rodgers said.

His teammates also wished him well as he starts the rehabilitation process.

The Jets’ promising cornerback, Sauce Gardner, wrote on Rodgers’ post that he did their handshake “with the air today” and told him to “get well soon.”

Garrett Wilson, another young rising Jets star, wrote, “We all can’t wait big dawg.”

Veteran wide receiver Randall Cobb, who played with Rodgers on the Green Bay Packers and is his teammate on the Jets, told him, “We all got your back.”

“You won’t be alone on this journey,” said Cobb.

Less than a handful of plays into his first game as the Jets starting quarterback, Rodgers was sacked in the first quarter and left with the injury to his left Achilles tendon on Monday. While the Jets still managed to secure a victory, 22-16, an MRI the following day confirmed Rodgers’ injury and he would have to sit out the rest of the season.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh said in a Tuesday news conference that he feels for Rodgers more “than anyone.”

“He’s invested so much into this organization, so much in this journey he’s embarked on and wanting to be a part of what we’ve got going on here. … I have a lot of emotions for him, as for us,” Saleh said.

The incident triggered renewed calls from the NFL players’ union to have stadiums switch from artificial turf to natural grass.

“While we know there is an investment to making this change, there is a bigger cost to everyone in our business if we keep losing our best players to unnecessary injuries,” NFLPA director Lloyd Howell said. “This is worth the investment and it simply needs to change now.”

    Will Aaron Rodgers retire?

Rodgers didn’t make any mention of retirement in his Instagram post. He signed a 3-year, $112,500,000 contract with the Jets in the offseason, which includes $75 million guaranteed, according to Spotrac. He can’t turn into a free agent until at least 2026.

Rodgers was traded to the Jets in the offseason following 18 seasons with the Packers. After months of anticipation and much hype, Jets fans had been waiting for the four-time NFL MVP to suit up for Gang Green, with some saying the star quarterback would help meet their Super Bowl expectations. The injury likely sunk those hopes and raised the possibility Rodgers could retire given his age. Sports media star and former NFL punter Pat McAfee speculated his friend, Rodgers, wouldn’t walk away from the game.

The Jets’ next game is against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. Zack Wilson, who took over after Rodgers exited, will be the Jets’ starting quarterback the rest of the season, Saleh said.

  • Jets QB Aaron Rodgers tears Achilles and will miss the rest of the 2023 season

Jets QB Aaron Rodgers tears Achilles and will miss the rest of the 2023 season

On Tuesday morning, a source confirmed quarterback Aaron Rodgers will miss the rest of the season after rupturing his Achilles just four plays into his Jets career. The 39-year-old underwent an MRI Tuesday to confirm Jets’ fans worst fear.

The injury happened when Jets left tackle Duane Brown tried to cut Bills edge rusher Leonard Floyd. But Floyd avoided Brown, which allowed him to sack Rodgers.

It appeared the play in which Rodgers was injured was designed for him to throw it away on a three-step drop. Wide receiver Garrett Wilson was open across the middle, but Rodgers held on to the football and took the sack

“It sucks, man,” Brown said on Monday night. “I’ve got all the respect and love for Aaron.”

At first, it appeared Rodgers was fine as he got up after the sack. But he quickly fell back down to the ground as trainers and Saleh came out to the field to check up on the former four-time NFL MVP.

Rodgers would then be escorted to the medical tent to be looked at. He was later taken to the X-ray room by cart as he was seen in a walking boot after the Jets ruled him out for the remainder of the game.

To say Rodgers’ injury is devastating is an understatement. After acquiring Rodgers in a trade from the Packers in April, many thought the Jets would end their 12-season playoff drought and contend for a Super Bowl championship. Now those prospects seem bleak as Gang Green will turn to Zach Wilson, who it selected No. 2 overall in the 2021 draft.

It has been an up-and-down career for Wilson, as he was once pegged as the future of the Jets franchise. However, he was benched multiple times last year during the Jets’ 19-3 loss to the Jaguars when he threw for 92 yards and an interception. Jets’ fans at MetLife Stadium booed Wilson as he was benched for Chris Streveler, as he didn’t start in the team’s final two games of the 2022 season.

Throughout the preseason, the Jets said they were getting back to basics with Wilson’s game as he learned a brand new offense in Nathaniel Hackett’s system as they also worked on the 24-year-old’s mechanics. Now we will see how much Wilson has improved.

Monday night was a good start for Wilson as he helped the Jets defeat the Bills 22-16, completing 14 of 21 passes for 140 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Saleh said Wilson would be the Jets starter quarterback if Rodgers was out for the season, but don’t be surprised if the team signs a veteran quarterback behind Wilson. Tim Boyle is the only other quarterback on the Jets roster, as he’s on the team’s practice squad.

  • Jets escape with OT victory after Aaron Rodgers goes down with Achilles injury

Jets escape with OT victory after Aaron Rodgers goes down with Achilles injury

Monday was the night all Jets fans waited for, Aaron Rodgers playing his first game with the Green and White.

While all that air quickly went out of the balloon after the Jets’ newest star went down early in the first quarter, Gang Green and Buffalo fans were treated to an exciting game.

The Jets (1-0) snuck by the Bills (0-1) 22-16 in overtime in front of a sellout crowd on Monday Night Football at MetLife Stadium.

Buffalo got the ball to begin overtime, but they went three and out after two pass plays and a run. Then, rookie wide receiver Xavier Gipson returned a punt 65 yards for a game-winning walk-off touchdown.

Jets fans were quiet for most of the night after Aaron Rodgers went down with what is believed to be an Achilles injury, per head coach Robert Saleh. But Zach Wilson helped energize the crowd with his play down the stretch.

Wilson looked like a much different quarterback in the fourth after the Jets couldn’t generate any offense during the first three quarters. Wilson completed a 24-yard pass to Allen Lazard before a defender brought him down. Wilson also completed a 14-yard pass to Garrett Wilson. That set up Zach Wilson’s touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson which tied the game.

Then just as the Bills got the ball back, Micheal Clemons forced a Josh Allen fumble. Quinnen Williams recovered it on the Bills 27.

Down three with less than two minutes to go, Allen and the Bills had one final chance to tie the game. With six seconds left, Tyler Bass converted a 50-yard field goal that bounced off the right upright. The Jets got the ball back with two seconds left but decided to knee it to force overtime.

Buffalo got the ball to begin overtime, but it went three and out after two pass plays and a run.

Wilson finished the night completing 14-of-21 passes for 140 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Early in the night, Jets fans were in a somber mode. Four plays into his Jets career, Rodgers left the game after being sacked for a 10-yard loss by Bills edge rusher Leonard Floyd. Rodgers initially got up following the sack, but he quickly went back down to the ground and he had to be helped to the sideline by trainers.

Rodgers later went into the blue medical tent on the sideline and into the locker room with a boot on his left foot. He was then ruled out for the remainder of the game, but the Jets said Rodgers’ X-rays were negative.

Rodgers was among the Jets players during pregame ceremonies commemorating the 22nd anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks.

After Wilson replaced Rodgers, the Jets offense couldn’t generate much offense outside of a few runs. With 3:08 left in the second quarter and the score 10-3, Wilson threw an interception to Matt Milano. Milano was then penalized for taunting Wilson after the play was over.

Breece Hall was one of the early bright spots for the Jets. He rushed for a 26-yard gain on the first play from scrimmage. He finished with 109 yards in the first half after he recorded an 83-yard play in the second quarter.

Monday marked Hall’s first action since tearing his ACL last October. He finished with 127 yards on 10 carries.

Dalvin Cook, in his first game with the Jets, rushed for 33 yards on 13 carries.

Finally, in the second quarter, tied 3-3, the Bills scored the night’s first touchdown. Josh Allen completed a five-yard pass to Stefon Diggs. That touchdown, which made the score 10-3, along with Rodgers’ injury, dejected all of the energy out of MetLife Stadium.

Gang Green recorded 143 yards in the first half. Fans booed their home team as they headed into the locker room down 13-3.

The Jets got the ball to begin the second half as Greg Zuerlein made his second field goal of the game, this time from 43 yards. Gang Green’s defense, much like a season ago, kept them in the game. Jordan Whitehead intercepted Josh Allen three times. In total, Allen committed four turnovers, which ultimately doomed the Bills.

Even before Rodgers’ injury, it was an eventful night even before kickoff as fans began entering the stadium. There was a shelter in place order for MetLife Stadium lifted about 7 p.m. as lighting and storms were in the area.

Fans tailgating and driving in at the stadium were subject to a public safety alert at 5:15 p.m. The New Jersey State Police warned fans to “seek shelter inside your vehicles or walk over to the bridge to American Dream.” Fans were finally allowed into the stadium after the bad weather stopped. There were even a couple of rainbows in the sky.

The Jets will travel to Arlington, Texas, next weekend to take on the Cowboys. Dallas blanked the Giants on Sunday Night, Football 40-0.

  • Aaron Rodgers exits MNF game vs. Bills in 1st quarter due to ankle injury

Aaron Rodgers exits MNF game vs. Bills in 1st quarter due to ankle injury

A nightmare situation transpired on the field on a night that was supposed to be a celebration for Jets fans.

Just four plays into their first offensive possession, Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered what the team called an ankle injury after Bills edge rusher Leonard Floyd sacked him. Rodgers came up limping after the play and eventually sat down on the field before he had to be helped to the sideline by trainers.

He ultimately went into the blue medical tent with the Jets medical staff.

The Jets later said Rodgers would be out for the remainder of the game as his x-rays were negative. On X.com, formerly known as Twitter, NFL Network showed a video of Rodgers riding to the x-ray room with a boot on his left foot.

Zach Wilson, who started at quarterback the last two years for the Jets, replaced Rodgers, trotting onto the field as the crowd at MetLife Stadium went from loud and rowdy to quiet.

Rodgers was traded to the Jets last April with many pundits believing they had a chance to contend for a Super Bowl. If Rodgers is out for an extended period of time, the Jets playoff aspirations could go up in smoke.

Wilson has started 22 games in his career as he has thrown for 4,022 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions.

Rodgers led the Jets onto the field during pregame ceremonies commemorating the 22nd anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, holding the American flag as he made his highly-anticipated entrance.

Now, the Jets — and their fans — have to hope Rodgers is back on the field soon.

This is a developing story. Check back for more details.

  • Aaron Rodgers Says He Doesn’t Expect To Play For Green Bay This Season

Aaron Rodgers Says He Doesn’t Expect To Play For Green Bay This Season

Aaron Rodgers said Wednesday he intends to play for the New York Jets in 2023 after 18 seasons in Green Bay as the four-time NFL MVP quarterback waits for the Packers to trade him.

Rodgers made his comments during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” on YouTube and Sirius XM. The 39-year-old Rodgers said he believes the Packers want to move on and make 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love their starting quarterback.

“At this point, as I sit here, I think since Friday I’ve made it clear that my intention was to play and my intention was to play for the New York Jets,” Rodgers said. “I haven’t been holding anything up at this point. It’s been compensation the Packers are trying to get for me, kind of digging their heels in.”

Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy has acknowledged the team granted the Jets permission to talk to Rodgers. The Jets sent a contingent that reportedly included owner Woody Johnson, coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas to Rodgers’ home in Southern California last week.

Rodgers expressed his appreciation for his 18 seasons in Green Bay throughout his Wednesday appearance but added that it’s time for the Packers “to do the right thing.”

“I don’t think there’s a scenario where they’re like, ‘Well, we want this and the Jets aren’t willing to give it to us, so we’ll take you back,’” Rodgers said. “That’s not the reality.”

Rodgers’ comments follow days of speculation that his time in Green Bay might be done.

Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy spoke of Rodgers in the past tense while discussing the quarterback’s future to Green Bay TV station WBAY last week during an appearance at the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association girls basketball championships.

“Very few players play for only one team,” Murphy told WBAY. “Obviously Brett (Favre) had a great career. Aaron had a great career here. Regardless of what happens, Aaron will be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He’ll be in our Hall of Fame. We’ll bring him back, retire his number. This is just one of the things that we go through as a team. We want to try to achieve something that’s good for both Aaron and us.”

The Jets’ interest in Rodgers has been apparent as they seek to end the NFL’s longest active playoff drought. They lost their final six games while going 7-10 last season and haven’t reached the postseason since 2010.

Their new offensive coordinator is former Denver Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett, who earned raves from Rodgers while coordinating Green Bay’s offense from 2019-21. Saleh and Johnson have both expressed their interest in adding a veteran quarterback to a roster that already features one of the league’s best defenses.

If Rodgers ends up with the Jets, it would be a case of history repeating itself.

The Packers sent a 39-year-old Brett Favre to the Jets in 2008, a move that ushered in Rodgers’ arrival as Green Bay’s starting quarterback. Favre had won three MVPs with Green Bay during his Hall of Fame career.

Rodgers had backed up Favre for three seasons after the Packers selected him out of California with the 24th overall pick in the 2005 draft. Love has backed up Rodgers for three seasons since the Packers traded up to take the former Utah State quarterback with the 26th overall pick in 2020.

  • Aaron Rodgers Went on a Darkness Retreat to Decide His Future | Entrepreneur

Aaron Rodgers Went on a Darkness Retreat to Decide His Future | Entrepreneur

Aaron Rodgers, the star quarterback of the NFL’s Green Bay Packers, just returned from a darkness retreat in Oregon, where he planned to figure out whether he would play next season or retire.

Appearing on Aubrey Marcus’s podcast, Rodgers spoke for the first time about his journey into darkness for two days.

“I spent parts of a couple of days imagining what it would be like to retire and then imagining what it would be like to continue to play,” he said.

Last month, Rodgers checked into a sensory deprivation facility called Sky Cave Retreats for a prolonged stay in a room completely devoid of light. He had previously said that he was spending the time in isolation “have a better sense of where I’m at in my life.”

When asked if the darkness retreat shed any light on his decision, Rodgers said he still wasn’t sure but would know soon.

“I really wanted to contemplate some things with some relationships in my life, some family stuff, and then obviously career stuff, just kind of let whatever was gonna come in, come in. And it did. It definitely did,” Rodgers said.

He said he expected some people would not be satisfied with his answer.

“If you don’t like it and you think it’s drama, you think I’m being a diva or whatever, then just tune it out,” he said about this big decision. “That’s fine. But this is my life. It’s important to me, and I’ll make a decision soon enough, and we’ll go down that road and be really excited about it.”

    More details on the retreat

Before entering the retreat, Rodgers told “The Pat McAfee Show” that he was going on the darkness retreat for four days. But according to reporting by ESPN, he cut his stay short by two days.

Scott Berman, who owns Sky Caves, said that Rodgers stayed in a 300-square-foot room that is partially underground structure and pitch black. His accommodations included a queen bed, a bathroom, and a meditation mat.

Rodgers admitted to Marcus that it was difficult to maneuver in the dark.

“The worst part was being disoriented, coming out of one of those like meditations where you think the bed’s over here. And that’s how I ran into things multiple times because I think, ‘I’m good,’ and bang — I ran into the wall, or dang, there’s the bathtub.”

But ultimately, he found the darkness valuable.

“All the answers are right inside me, and I touched many of them — and definitely the feelings — on both sides during the darkness. I’m thankful for that time,” he said.

  • NFL star Aaron Rodgers went to a darkness retreat to contemplate his future. What is that and how does it work? | CNN

NFL star Aaron Rodgers went to a darkness retreat to contemplate his future. What is that and how does it work? | CNN

    CNN
     —

For four days this week, home for Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was a pitch-black room. There were no phones, no television, no lights or distractions. Just Rodgers, alone with his thoughts, in a cabin built specifically for prolonged isolation in the dark.

When the four-time NFL MVP announced plans earlier this month to contemplate his NFL future in isolation at a “darkness retreat,” many were left scratching their heads.

“It’s just sitting in isolation, meditation, dealing with your thoughts,” Rodgers said earlier this month. “We rarely even turn our phone off or put the blinds down to sleep in darkness. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Rodgers is no stranger to alternative therapies. He credits psychedelics like psilocybin and ayahuasca for helping to alleviate his fear of death and deepening a sense of self-love. The football star said he has done “many meditation and yoga retreats” in the past and defended his decision to try darkness therapy as one of several practices “that have stimulated my mind and helped me get in a better headspace and have a greater peace in my life.”

But what exactly happens in a darkness retreat? And is it just another new-age fad or perhaps something that could benefit the rest of us?

A darkness retreat is exactly what it sounds like: a prolonged stay in a space completely devoid of light. One of the centers offering the practice is Sky Cave Retreats, nestled in the Cascade-Siskiyou wilderness, in Southern Oregon, near Klamath Falls.

“The reasons for doing this range from people wanting to know themselves more, to people who want to rest, reset and relax, to those who want to explore consciousness and deepen their meditation practice,” said Scott Berman, who owns Sky Cave Retreats along with his wife Jill, adding the darkness helps illuminate what really matters by stripping away the constant bombardment of sensory input and stimulation many people experience in their hectic modern lives.

“When someone goes into the darkness, all these things that were important to them like money, fame, power, status, being worthy – they all become insignificant and meaningless in the dark,” Berman said. “In the dark, all you have is the present moment which reveals what is truly meaningful – whether it’s love, forgiveness, peace – and it begins to transform you as you truly authentically touch what is most important to you.”

The center currently operates three stand-alone cabins built specifically for prolonged isolation in the dark – earth-sheltered caves, which on the outside are somewhat reminiscent of a Hobbit home. Each space contains a bed, a toilet, sink and a bathtub, as well as a low table for eating and a carpeted area for yoga and meditation. Participants can leave at any time – the doors are never locked – and there is a light switch for emergencies which is protected by a childproof guard so it isn’t flipped on by accident.

The cost includes three meals a day, which Berman delivers personally all at once in the evening (through a lightproof double-sided food box) to minimize the disturbance. This is when participants have an opportunity for a conversation, which could be 10 seconds or 30 minutes, according to Berman, depending on the person’s needs.

Participants typically spend three to four days in the darkness at a cost of $250 a night and are encouraged to take an extra day before and after to integrate the experience.

Each space contains a bed, a toilet, sink and a bathtub, as well as a low table for eating and a carpeted area for yoga and meditation.

Burak Dalcik, a 27-year-old salesman from Arlington, Virginia, said the four days he spent in the dark at Sky Caves Retreats in January gave him clarity about his priorities. He found he no longer labeled experiences as positive or negative, but rather allowed them to come and to go, which led to less stress and anxiety at work and in his personal life. He also said he started calling his mom, who lives back in Turkey, more frequently.

“It just really trims all the unnecessary fat and allows you to focus on some of the most important things and really allows you to understand who you are,” said Dalcik. “There’s nothing New Age about this – it boils down to can you just sit by yourself with yourself? And if you can’t, you should probably get pretty curious about why.”

Berman cautions the retreat isn’t for everyone, nor should it be seen as a quick fix to one’s troubles.

“It’s not like this magical, mind-blowing, amazing experience – it can be extremely difficult and uncomfortable,” Berman said. “But in the darkness, discomfort is the door to transformation. There’s an acceptance and a profound love that people start to experience when they’re no longer resisting that part of themselves.”

For now, there is limited research on how darkness retreats impact the human brain and body. Some centers claim the experience can help heal traumas or activate the pineal glad, another claim is darkness therapy increases melatonin production in the brain.

“That’s totally false,” said Dr. David Blask, the head of the Laboratory of Chrono-Neuroendocrine Oncology at Tulane University School of Medicine. “There may be some psychological benefits that people derive from a darkness retreat that they feel are important for them, but certainly not from a strict endocrine neuroendocrine or biochemical physiological standpoint.”

Dr. Marek Malůš, a psychologist at the University of Ostrava in the Czech Republic who has been studying darkness therapies since 2010, sees the technique as a promising therapeutic tool.

“Your thoughts, memories, emotions, inner world and mental processes become much more balanced and integrated,” Malůš said.

While he and his colleagues are working to secure funding for additional studies, Malůš said preliminary research showed just four days in a darkness chamber was enough to help increase mindfulness and self-esteem, lower symptoms of depression and anxiety, while improving parasympathetic nervous system functions, which helps with stress management and lowering burnout symptoms. Subjects reported feeling the benefits three weeks after the experience.

Berman said he hopes to see more scientific research into the benefits of darkness retreats, but cautions against anyone seeking to use the retreat for some sort of natural high.

“If somebody’s coming here because they want to have a so-called DMT experience, you’ve come into the wrong place,” he said. “But there is a lot of benefit in not looking outside of ourselves for confirmation of our worth and using the darkness to illuminate our true nature.”

For those who aren’t able to commit the time or money for a darkness retreat but want a taste of some of the benefits, Berman suggests starting small at home.

“It’s about becoming accustomed to authentically slowing down, putting the phone away, turning out the lights, closing the blinds and just resting,” he said. “Not to get somewhere, not to heal but just to be curious about what’s actually happening within yourself.”
