  • Shawn Levy Celebrates ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ Wrapping Its Shoot With Behind-the-Scenes Look

Star Wars: Starfighter is getting ready to hit the ground running.

Filmmaker Shawn Levy took to Instagram on Thursday to celebrate the forthcoming feature having wrapped filming. Ryan Gosling stars in the movie that Disney is set to release theatrically on May 28, 2027.

Levy shared a photo of himself jogging along the set. He added the caption, “That’s a wrap! Headed into #Starfighter post-production like…”

The director previously marked the start of the shoot in September by sharing a photo of Gosling and co-star Flynn Gray posing in costume with the Mediterranean Sea behind them. “Somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea #Starfighter,” Levy captioned that image.

Plot details for Star Wars: Starfighter have not yet been revealed, although the stand-alone movie is set roughly five years after the events of 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which was the last title from the franchise to hit theaters. Director Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian & Grogu is set for theatrical release on May 22, 2026, as a spinoff to the Disney+ series The Mandalorian.

Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings and Amy Adams round out the cast for Star Wars: Starfighter.

“The reality is that this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters,” Gosling told the audience earlier this year at Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo. “It’s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.”

Jonathan Tropper wrote the script for the movie that Levy has been developing since 2022. Levy and Kathleen Kennedy serve as producers.

Levy’s recent directorial credits include Disney’s massive hit Deadpool & Wolverine and Netflix’s The Adam Project.

Gosling leads next year’s Amazon MGM Studios feature Project Hail Mary.

  • DC’s ‘Lanterns’ teaser proves we have the perfect Hal & John | The Mary Sue

The Supergirl teaser trailer isn’t the only DC thing that’s about to break the Internet this week. On Friday, as part of HBO’s slew of announcements for their 2026 programming, the first look at footage from the upcoming Lanterns television series was revealed.

There were already a ton of expectations riding on the series: as the first DC Universe project to land on HBO, and as the first live-action Green Lantern project after over a decade of jokes and failed stops and starts. And if this footage is any indication, the show is absolutely going to knock it out of the park.

Honestly, you can get that vibe just based on the few seconds shown both in this video and in the larger HBO sizzle reel. After a few disparate shots of Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) investigating a mystery, the main moment of the footage sells things perfectly. As the two of them sit in a moving car, Hal takes off his Green Lantern ring and argues that, “You’re not ready to get up in front of the class until the ring says you are.” He then tucks and rolls completely out of the car, leaving John to quickly fend for himself before he and the vehicle are sent off a cliff. It’s such a small moment… but in just a matter of seconds, it sells the two characters better than many Green Lantern fans could have possibly imagined.

Hal Jordan, I love you already.

While Chandler’s casting (and the idea of the DCU’s Hal Jordan being older to begin with) sparked a bit of discourse at first, the tide has started to turn for the better with each new piece of information we get about the show. The first-look photo for Lanterns released earlier this year sold Hal’s vibe perfectly: disheveled, but determined. He looked like someone who could (and probably has) valiantly fought as a Green Lantern for a while, even if he’s not really ever had a concrete plan while doing so, and who is now being tested by the arrival of this younger protege.

And this Lanterns footage, and particularly the moment with the car, seals that even further. One of my favorite quotes about Hal comes from comic writer Kurt Busiek, who argues that he’s “the kind of guy who will jump off a cliff because he’ll figure out something to do on the way down.” In lieu of him literally jumping off a cliff, it’s a brilliant choice to introduce him to the Lanterns audience by having him go without his superpowers, willingly fall out of a moving car, but still trust that he and John will make it out of things okay.

Meanwhile, Pierre’s John gets to be the ideal straight man: befuddled by his mentor’s decisions, and unaware of just how much he’s going to grow while becoming a part of the Lantern Corps. Their dynamic has already been teased before we even saw this footage, with showrunner Chris Mundy revealing in a recent Men’s Health profile that Chandler and Pierre would even playfully give each other shit off-camera. It’s the kind of rapport that these two characters have deserved for years — and HBO and DC Studios found the perfect way to sell it to us in no time at all.

  • How HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ Show Aims to Get John Stewart Right

As the year comes to a close, it just means less time having to wait until 2026 for DC Studios’ Lanterns show after Warner Bros.’ solid Peacemaker and Superman run.

The next phase of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s take on the DCU is the series showrun by Chris Mundy (True Detective) and starring Aaron Pierre as John Stewart.

In a new profile of the actor in Men’s Health, Mundy and Pierre spoke about the show, with Mundy explaining that their take on the Green Lantern’s heroic mantle is “as much of a buddy cop show as a superhero show.”

Centering on a seasoned Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and on-the-rise John Stewart, Lanterns will explore their dueling schools of thought when it comes to superhero legacies.

“Our show is in a lot of ways about replacement—when should someone step aside and when is it time for the next person to take the reins?” Mundy told the magazine. “That push and pull between those two characters is really important. So much of the power that John has is by not taking the bait, understanding that you lose your power if you’re yelling and screaming. That’s what we’re trying to convey: he knows he belongs, so he doesn’t have to overcompensate. There’s a real balance there that’s just innately inside of Aaron. He’s big. He’s an intimidating presence just physically. But there’s a softness to him too. There’s a thoughtfulness. You can’t teach that.”

For Pierre, “the character just radiates strength and fortitude … That hunger to be the best version of yourself, which also holds you accountable when you’re not.”

Lanterns will be the first time fans see John Stewart as a live-action character, and the duo understands the importance of that.

“Aaron felt a responsibility, especially as a Black man playing this particular role, to make sure he really understood him and brought him to life,” the showrunner said. “I think fans will see the reverence he has for it, and that goes a long way.”

‘Rebel Ridge’ Star Aaron Pierre Plays A Man With A Very Special Skillset

If you are looking for a good watch this weekend we can’t say enough good things about Jeremy Saulnier’s new Netflix project Rebel Ridge or the film’s star Aaron Pierre (Genius MLK/X, The Underground Railroad).

But for the sake of brevity, we’ll keep it to ten reasons why you should watch.

    1. Aaron Pierre Is Movie Star FINE!

We’ll start with the obvious. We stopped paying close attention to those “Sexiest Man” lists but we know a panty melter when we see one. We won’t wax too poetic because we KNOW you see the material. The eyes, the skin, the lips, the smile. The PHYSIQUE! The film stars Pierre as Terry Richmond, an ex-Marine who enters the town of Shelby Springs on a simple but urgent mission– post bail for his cousin and save him from imminent danger.

    2. Terry Richmond, the most loyal cousin to ever cousin, would definitely be our favorite cousin.

BOSSIP Sr. Content Director chatted with Pierre ahead of the film’s debut and he revealed he had no trouble relating to Richmond’s devotion to his cousin.

“It’s almost more like a sibling,” Pierre said of his own experiences with his cousins. “We were in and out of each other’s houses almost as much as our own.”

    3. Aaron Pierre Vs. Don Johnson is the kind of FAFO that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

When Terry’s life’s savings is unjustly seized by law-enforcement, he’s forced to go head to head with local police chief Sandy Burnne (Don Johnson) and his combat-ready officers.

    4. Terry is kind. Terry is smart. Terry is loyal. (So is Summer but this wasn’t supposed to be about her).

Terry finds an unlikely ally in court clerk Summer McBride (AnnaSophia Robb) and the two become ensnared in a deep-rooted conspiracy within the remote township.

    5. Terry is nice with weapons. All of them.

As the stakes turn deadly, Terry must call upon his mysterious background to break the department’s hold on the community, bring justice to his own family– and protect Summer in the process.

Aaron Pierre goes full action hero for this film and we are here for it.

    6. Aaron Pierre’s Terry Richmond exudes an undeniable strength. He is disciplined, strong, strategic and exhibits a depth of emotions.

In conversation with BOSSIP, Pierre spoke about his appreciation for the role and credited Saulnier for creating a character that allowed him to perform a truly multi-dimensional role.

    7. Aaron Pierre was excited to work with Jeremy Saulnier and it shows!

Pierre told BOSSIP that even before reading the script for Rebel Ridge he had a good feeling about it.

“When my team called to tell me about the project they were very excited,” Pierre recalled. “They said ‘we think you’re going to like this one.’ I read it and loved it. But when I heard it was Jeremy Saulnier I was already like ‘sign me up’.”

Saulnier is also the acclaimed writer/director of Green Room, Blue Ruin and Hold The Dark.

    8. Aaron Pierre is about that action in Rebel Ridge.

The synopsis for the film describes Rebel Ridge as “a deeply human yet high-velocity thriller that explores corruption and morality in the context of bone-breaking action and ever-coiling suspense.” That’s a really inspired way of saying Aaron Pierre’s Terry Richmond will be biking, stunt diving, fighting and putting those good muscles to work.

“There wasn’t a day I wasn’t getting bruised up,” Pierre told BOSSIP,” and I loved every minute of it.”

    9. Terry Richmond is creative and strategic.

Going up against a crooked southern police unit isn’t the best case scenario for anybody, particularly not a Black man — but Terry really never stops looking for solutions, no matter how tough his odds are.

    10. This isn’t your average police misconduct scandal.

There are all kinds of twists and turns in this movie and as the plot thickens, Aaron Pierre’s Terry Richmond just gets more fun to watch.
