    To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Concorde, the UK’s Royal Mail has released a special set of 12 stamps

    The golden age of aviation returns to the spotlight today as the UK celebrates the 50th anniversary of Concorde’s first commercial supersonic flights…

    Half a century ago, on January 21, 1976, the world (temporarily) grew smaller as British Airways and Air France launched Concorde with simultaneous departures from London and Paris, beginning a 27-year era of travel that remains unmatched.

    To commemorate the milestone, Royal Mail has released a special set of 12 stamps. These designs, featuring the King Charles III silhouette, claim to capture the aircraft’s “innovation, elegance, and engineering excellence.”

    The 50th anniversary celebration also includes co-ordinated “nose-drop” events across the UK, where preserved Concorde aircraft lower their famous drooped nose cones at the exact time (11:40 am) that the first flights took off in 1976.

    Here are 10 legendary facts about the “Queen of the Skies” on her 50th anniversary:

    1. The simultaneous debut: Concorde’s commercial life began with two flights at the same moment. British Airways flight BA300 departed London Heathrow for Bahrain, while an Air France flight took off from Paris for Rio de Janeiro.

    2. Record-breaking speed: Concorde typically cruised at 1,350 mph – more than twice the speed of sound. At this velocity, the aircraft was faster than a rifle bullet, capable of covering a mile in just 2.75 seconds.

    3. The ultimate New York sprint: The record for the fastest transatlantic passenger flight was set on February 7, 1996. A British Airways Concorde (G-BOAD) flew from New York’s JFK to London Heathrow in a staggering 2 hours, 52 minutes, and 59 seconds.

    4. Youngest in the cockpit: In 1977, at the age of 28, Mike Bannister became the youngest pilot to join the British Airways Concorde fleet.     5. Stretching in the heat: Due to the intense friction of flying at Mach 2, the aircraft’s fuselage would heat up and expand. During a flight, Concorde actually stretched between 6 and 10 inches in length.

    6. A price tag for the elite: Luxury came at a premium. By the time it was retired in 2003, a standard return ticket from London to New York cost around £6,636 – equivalent to over £12,000 today. Passengers often joked they could arrive in New York before they had even left London due to the time difference.

    7. The only fatal tragedy: Despite being considered the safest plane in the world for years, Concorde’s legacy was forever changed by the crash of Air France Flight 4590 on July 25, 2000. Debris on the runway in Paris caused a tyre to burst, rupturing a fuel tank and leading to a fire that killed 113 people.

    8. The droop nose: The distinctive hydraulically operated nose cone was a necessity of engineering. It would tilt down by 12.5 degrees during take-off and landing so that pilots could actually see the runway, as the aircraft flew at a high angle of attack.

    9. Formation flying: To celebrate its 10th anniversary in service in 1986, British Airways performed a rare feat: flying four Concordes in close formation. This iconic moment is featured on one of the new Royal Mail commemorative stamps.

    10. The Final farewell Concorde’s last commercial flight took place on October 24, 2003, travelling from New York to London. It signalled the end of civilian supersonic travel, leaving a legacy of engineering brilliance that remains a symbol of British and French ambition today.

After being cut down this week, it made the roughly 150-mile journey south on a flatbed truck, drawing curious onlookers along the way.The crowds were much bigger at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, where workers used cranes to hoist the 11-ton tree into position overlooking the iconic skating rink. People gathered with coffee cups and phones as crews secured the spruce and began the careful process of stabilizing it.The tree will soon be decorated with more than 50,000 multicolored, energy-efficient LED lights and crowned with a Swarovski star weighing 900 pounds.It will be lit Dec. 3 during a live TV broadcast hosted by country music star Reba McEntire and remain on display until mid-January, after which it will be milled into lumber for use by the affordable housing nonprofit Habitat for Humanity.The tree was donated by homeowner Judy Russ and her family.   • Hurricane Melissa Lashes Cuba as Category 2 Storm

    Hurricane Melissa weakened to a Category 2 storm that is expected to cause catastrophic damage as it passes through Cuba, a day after it hit Jamaica as one of the most powerful Atlantic storms on record. 

    The hurricane passed through eastern Cuba on Wednesday morning with 105 mile-an-hour winds, and is expected to dump as much as 25 inches of rain in certain areas, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm made landfall early Wednesday in the Cuban province of Santiago de Cuba with maximum sustained winds of close to 120 mph.

    Hurricane Melissa hit Jamaica Tuesday as one of the most powerful Atlantic storms to make landfall on record.

    Melissa came ashore in southwestern Jamaica as a Category 5 storm with 185 miles-per-hour winds, according to the National Hurricane Center. Jamaican officials said the storm has trapped families in homes, damaged hospitals and cut power for three-quarters of the island. Forecasters urged residents to stay in their homes, calling the storm “an extremely dangerous and life-threatening situation.”

    A Maryland man doesn’t consider himself a regular lottery player or avid watcher of the news.

    Ironically, it was a series of numbers in a news story led him to a big lottery win, Maryland Lottery officials said in an Oct. 24 news release

    The man was watching the news and saw the numbers “29000,” lottery officials said.

    “When I saw those numbers, a feeling came over me,” he said.

    The player used those numbers to play a $1 straight bet on a Pick 5 ticket at a Lanham liquor store, lottery officials said.

    He said he tucked the ticket away in his wallet, then “headed back home.”

    Days later, the player remembered to check his ticket and found his number combination was an exact match, scoring him a $50,000 prize, lottery officials said.

    The man said his win left him in disbelief, “at first.”

    “I let it sink in and then let my mother and grandmother confirm it because they are the Lottery players, not me,” he said.

    Even his mother was taken aback by her son’s win.

    “I was so shocked and surprised to see that he actually won,” the mother told lottery officials. “I’m really happy for him.”

    The winner said he plans to tuck away most of his winnings in savings and might pay off his car.

    Lanham is about a 15-mile drive northeast from downtown Washington, D.C.

    Hurricane Melissa has strengthened to a Category 5 storm and is expected to produce catastrophic floods and heavy infrastructure damage in Jamaica.

    Flash floods are projected to sweep through Jamaica on Monday and into Tuesday, with parts of the island expected to receive as much as 40 inches of rain, according to the National Hurricane Center. The weather service is advising people to avoid leaving safe shelters during the storm, which has sustained winds of 160 miles an hour.

    A Maryland woman had time to spare, so she tried her luck.

    “I got bored waiting at the doctor’s,” the woman told Maryland Lottery officials in an Oct. 9 news release.

    She filled her time with a trip to a Hagerstown liquor store to buy a $20 All About Cash scratch-off ticket, lottery officials said.

    The player said she started to scratch her ticket and soon noticed “all of her numbers matched up with winning numbers.”

    She saw she had won prizes of $1,000, $5,000 and a few more, but soon the anticipation was too much, lottery officials said.

    “I had to stop and went over to check the machine,” she said.

    The woman said she scanned her ticket and saw she won a $50,000 prize.

    “I cried after I won,” the winner said. “I was very happy.”

    The woman told lottery officials “she plans to use her winnings to square her finances.”

    Hagerstown is about an 80-mile drive northwest from Baltimore.
