  • CBD shown to ease anxiety without the risks that can come with THC – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

CBD shown to ease anxiety without the risks that can come with THC – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Study Finds CBD-Rich Cannabis Products Ease Anxiety Better Than THC-Dominant Ones.

Cannabis products high in the nonintoxicating compound CBD can quell anxiety better than THC-dominant products— and without the potential side effects, new University of Colorado Boulder research suggests.

The study of 300 people, published in the journal Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, is the first randomized trial to examine how legal, commercially available cannabis impacts anxiety symptoms.

The study comes as one in five U.S. adults suffer from an anxiety disorder, making it the most common mental illness in the country, and prescriptions for anti-anxiety medications are on the rise.

“We need more data before we can say conclusively that there are long-term, beneficial effects, but the short-term effects were very clear: CBD was associated with tension and anxiety relief with limited harm,” said senior author Cinnamon Bidwell, associate professor in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience and the Institute of Cognitive Science.

    A first-ever trial

Adults rank anxiety among the top three medical reasons (along with sleep and pain) for turning to cannabis, a.k.a. marijuana, for relief. Yet research on whether it works has been mixed.

Some studies have suggested that using cannabis too frequently or using potent products high in the intoxicating cannabinoid THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) can actually worsen anxiety long-term. Others have shown that adding CBD to…

  • CBD industry faces ‘existential crisis’ – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

CBD industry faces ‘existential crisis’ – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Bethany Gomez, managing director of the Brightfield Group, spoke with NutraIngredients-USA about the difficulties the cannabidiol industry is experiencing when it comes to defining itself.

“The CBD industry is always in motion. It’s always changing, moving, fluctuating. Right now, it’s really facing an existential crisis where it’s trying to determine where it fits in the market,” Gomez said. “Is it really a standalone industry anymore? Is it just another functional ingredient, part of the larger wellness space? Or is it part of the larger cannabis space? We’ve seen it start to meld into that industry as regulated cannabis expands and hemp-derived THC products have exploded around the country as well. So, it’s certainly always in a state of identity crisis and always in a state of fluctuation.”

Gomez continues by discussing how that identity crisis relates to the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp production and where CBD fits in.

A big part of the conversation around CBD is it’s positioning, as it’s marketed mostly as a mood and sleep support product. More than 53% of all CBD consumers use the substance for these purposes, and it has overtaken pain and inflammation as key reasons that consumers are using it, Gomez said.

“[Consumers know] they need to be able to take the edge off, but they don’t want to be turning to things like alcohol, or they don’t want to be turning to things like pharmaceutical products,” Gomez added. “So, it’s…

  • Former Speaker received ‘commercial sex’ as bribes for Medical Marijuana licenses – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Former Speaker received ‘commercial sex’ as bribes for Medical Marijuana licenses – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Former Michigan House Speaker Accused of Accepting Bribes, Including Commercial Sex, During Tenure as Cannabis Licensing Board Chair.

In addition to cash payments and private jet travel, former Michigan House Speaker Rick Johnson received “thousands of dollars worth of commercial sex” with a sex worker as bribes during his time as chair of the now-defunct Michigan Medical Marihuana Licensing Board, according to a federal court filing published Thursday.

Johnson and three other individuals have been charged and pleaded guilty to federal corruption charges in the bribery scheme. The first individual to plead guilty, John Dalaly, received a 28-month federal prison sentence Thursday during a hearing in Grand Rapids. During the hearing, his attorney Raymond Cassar said Dalaly had no involvement with the sex worker being provided to Johnson.

According to a sentencing memo filed by federal prosecutors in Johnson’s case, “Johnson demanded and received at least $110,200 in bribes while he was MMLB Chair, including cash payments, a $20,000 ‘loan’ with no repayment terms or demand, flights on private aircraft, and thousands of dollars’ worth of commercial sex with a woman in the adult entertainment industry.”

“In return, Johnson provided an unfair advantage to bribe payers in the form of his favorable vote on license applications, his help and support throughout the licensing process, and confidential inside information pertaining to the Board’s work and other…

  • Many Americans wrongly believe exposure to Marijuana smoke is safer than tobacco – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Many Americans wrongly believe exposure to Marijuana smoke is safer than tobacco – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Is inhaling marijuana smoke safer than inhaling smoke from tobacco?

A majority of American adults say yes, according to a new survey, and they also believe there is less harm to adults and children from secondhand marijuana smoke than tobacco smoke.

However, those beliefs are just not true, said lead study author Dr. Beth Cohen, professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco and co-director of UCSF’s program in residency investigation methods and epidemiology.

“When you burn something, whether it is tobacco or cannabis, it creates toxic compounds, carcinogens, and particulate matter that are harmful to health,” she said in an email. “It’s the combustion that’s the problem, so this idea that because cannabis is ‘natural’ burning and inhaling it is fine is just wrong.”

While many longitudinal studies on the health impact of inhaling marijuana are still under way, there are “plenty of toxins and tar” in cannabis smoke that can hurt the lungs, said Carol Boyd, founding director of the Center for the Study of Drugs, Alcohol, Smoking and Health at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She was not involved in the new study.

“I do not believe that comparing the health risks of marijuana smoking and tobacco smoking is useful any more than asking, ‘Are eating cookies healthier than eating cake?’  All smoke is an irritant to the respiratory tract and at a time in human history when humans breathe polluted air, NO…

Bill aims to establish regulatory framework for CBD as a supplement – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) has reintroduced a bill that aims to establish US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulatory framework for CBD as a dietary supplement or food and beverage additive.

Alongside Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Wyden announced the reintroduction of The Hemp Access and Consumer Safety Act.

The U.S. Hemp Roundtable has said that it strongly endorses this legislation and applauds Sen. Wyden and his Congressional colleagues for championing efforts to regulate CBD products in the Senate.

Jonathan Miller, General Counsel of the U.S. Hemp Roundtable stated: “We commend Senator Ron Wyden for reintroducing The Hemp Access and Consumer Safety Act, a crucial piece of legislation that addresses the pressing need for FDA regulation of CBD.

“This bill provides a much needed pathway for FDA to establish a clear and consistent framework for the production, marketing, and sale of hemp-derived CBD to ensure consumer safety while fostering a thriving, regulated market. We look forward to supporting his efforts and appreciate his longtime commitment to unlocking the full potential of the hemp industry.”

The Hemp Access and Consumer Safety Act of 2023 is also being endorsed by national advocacy organizations including We Are For Better Alternatives (WAFBA), the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), the Hemp Industries Association (HIA), National Hemp Growers Association, Realm of Caring, U.S. Hemp Authority (USHA)…

  • Wisconsin law enforcement officials wait to see impact of legal Marijuana in Minnesota – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Wisconsin law enforcement officials wait to see impact of legal Marijuana in Minnesota – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Law enforcement officials in western Wisconsin are taking a wait-and-see approach to potential marijuana trafficking through the state as Minnesota is set to legalize recreational use of the drug Aug 1.

When the new Minnesota law takes effect, adults age 21 and up will be able to possess and transport up to 2 ounces of cannabis flower, up to 8 grams of concentrated cannabis and edible products with up to 800 milligrams of THC. Minnesota residents also are allowed to possess up to 2 pounds of pot at their homes.

The Minnesota law will mean marijuana is legal in all states bordering Wisconsin except Iowa. For the first time, it will be legal across Wisconsin’s western border.

Possession, use or sale of marijuana remains illegal in Wisconsin.

Buffalo County Sheriff Michael Osmond said the impact of Minnesota’s legalization on his county is unknown.

“I trust that the folks over in Minnesota will know that it’s illegal over here, and they’ll just stay over and keep all the products over there,” Osmond said. “There’s certainly potential, but I’m just hoping for the best and that people know it’s still illegal over here and we’re going to enforce the law.”

Buffalo County is one of the few Wisconsin counties on the Mississippi River with two bridges going into Minnesota. Osmond said the bridges are the two busiest points for traffic in the county.

“We’re not going to do anything different than the last 17 years I’ve been here,” Osmond…

  • Medical Marijuana opponents contend NC roads will become less safe if legislation is passed – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Medical Marijuana opponents contend NC roads will become less safe if legislation is passed – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

North Carolina lawmakers are debating a cannabis bill again.

Lawmakers are once again deliberating whether to legalize marijuana for medical use, an issue that has plenty of supporters in the state Senate but has failed to become law the past two legislative cycles.

Sen. Bill Rabon (R-Southport), a primary sponsor of the bill and a colon cancer survivor, has been pushing for several years for North Carolina to join the 38 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and territories that allow the use of marijuana — also referred to as cannabis — for medical purposes. Reasons given for opposition to the proposal in years past have varied. This year, many of the bill’s detractors have argued that legalization would make North Carolina’s roadways more treacherous.

The bill passed the state Senate with bipartisan support, but House members had pointed questions for Rabon on May 30, when he took the floor at a House Health Committee meeting to make his case for the Compassionate Care Act.

Rabon, a veterinarian and state senator since 2011 who is head of the powerful rules committee, takes anybody willing to listen along his journey to becoming an advocate for medical marijuana.

    It’s personal for him.

At age 48, Rabon was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer and began chemotherapy. To battle the nausea associated with the treatment, he was prescribed dronabinol pills, a man-made form of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the component of cannabis that produces the…

  • Local CBD stores share opposing views to Medical Cannabis on the ballot – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Local CBD stores share opposing views to Medical Cannabis on the ballot – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

One activist group is looking to put legalizing medical marijuana on the ballot and this isn’t their first attempt.

Herbal Wonder LLC employee Zack Thumann says he knows his way around the joint but despite his occupation, he’s not in support of seeing medical cannabis on the ballot.

“We support decriminalization as opposed to legalization because with decriminalization that opens up a lot more avenues for the common person to get their hands on the flower without having to maybe pay or go through excessive loopholes to get their hands on it,” said Thumann.

Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana have a different opinion.

For several years now, the group has campaigned for cannabis policy reform with the goal to legalize the drug medicinally across the state.

Recently, they filed a ballot to put legalizing medical marijuana in the hands of voters come November 2024.

This new filing serves as the group’s third attempt as their efforts in 2022 and 2020 did not succeed.

The petition details from their website consist of two statutory measures: one to establish a doctor-patient system and regulation of the medical marijuana industry.

I reached out to Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana but they were not available.

While some people are against the group’s efforts, others are not.

Generation V is in support of putting medical cannabis on the ballot.

“It benefits many many people that it just hasn’t reached yet it helps with tons of different medical properties…

  • CBD show great promise for autism spectrum disorder – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

CBD show great promise for autism spectrum disorder – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

CBDV is currently being studied on adults and children with autism spectrum disorder. Learn more about CBDV and CBD studies here.

Autism Spectrum Disorder affects millions of people across the globe, and there is a real need for new medications that can help with the social and behavioral challenges associated with it. A compound found in hemp and cannabis, cannabidivarin (CBDV), shows great promise in preclinical animal models of autism spectrum disorder and is currently being tested on 100 children. The main areas that CBDV shows potential for are: improving sociability, motor coordination, and short-term memory, while decreasing irritability and repetitive movements. CBDV is also being examined for seizures, muscular dystrophy, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In this article, we will explain what CBDV is, describe studies on CBDV as well as CBD and autism, and where to find safe, lab-tested CBDV for sale.

    What is CBDV?

Hemp and cannabis plants contain more than 100 cannabinoids. These are active compounds that are each believed to offer unique effects and benefits as they interact with the human endocannabinoid system. The best-known cannabinoids are non-psychoactive CBD (cannabidiol) and psychoactive THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). The dozens of other cannabinoids are called “rare” or “minor” cannabinoids because they occur in much smaller quantities.

CBDV is a rare cannabinoid that is a homolog, or slightly different version, of CBD…

  • Elite athletes tolerate topical CBD treatment with minor side effects – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Elite athletes tolerate topical CBD treatment with minor side effects – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

The use of CBD in sports is not new, as it has catalyzed the interests of many athletes at different levels in recent years. But a study claimed to be the first of its kind has tried to assess how topical CBD can help elite athletes manage pain.

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a popular cannabinoid in the cannabis plant. Unlike THC, it does not produce psychoactive effects, and research has demonstrated its ability to treat pain through its analgesic properties.

Researchers from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center at Shreveport collaborated with the Tiger Research Group (TRG), a Dallas-based private organization dedicated to advancing cannabinoid therapy through education and research, to investigate the impact of topical CBD on elite athletes.

The results of the study published in the Journal of Cannabis Research late last month found that using CBD to treat lower extremity pain did not lead to any severe adverse reactions that required medical attention.

Although 30% of the participants reported minor adverse effects that did not hinder their ability to complete the study, the remaining 70% tolerated the treatment without experiencing any negative side effects.

The authors of this study claim that it is the first of its kind as it is focused on elite athletes, who are at a higher risk of sustaining injuries that could lead to disability.

The researchers selected 20 former athletes who played professional sports for 3-10 years, including American…

  • Child accused of passing out Marijuana Candy in School – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Child accused of passing out Marijuana Candy in School – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Parents of students at a local school are furious over a situation involving drugs brought by a student.

KTAL Reports are stating that a female student brought the marijuana edibles from home and passed them out to some students. Reports also state that the mother of a 13 year-old student at Green Oaks Performing Arts School in Shreveport said her daughter was given the edibles while in school.

The gummies seem to be regular candy, but if you inspect the packaging it shows that they are laced with the active chemical in marijuana (THC).

Several parents are upset that the school did not notify parents of the incident at the time it was happening. One parent reported that the suspected student had at least 50 of the laced candies in her backpack. Nearly 300 dollars worth of marijuana edibles.

The effects of THC on a person that has never used it could be scary! Some of the effects could include paranoia, panic attacks, dizziness, and emotional distress.

A spokesperson for Caddo Parish Schools issued this statement:

“Board policy will be followed to discipline any student found to be in possession of an illegal substance. We take the health and safety of our students very seriously and any illicit products will be immediately confiscated. We encourage students to notify a teacher or an administrator if they believe a classmate has a controlled substance.”

Parents have all now been notified of the incident, and the student’s punishment is being…

  • Is it ethical to use CBD in professional sports? – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Is it ethical to use CBD in professional sports? – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Consumption of drugs and food supplements is highly debated in professional sports.

Substances that can potentially change performance have been traditionally banned, and their use is punished by disqualification and fines. CBD has been a gray zone in this regard. On the one hand, evidence suggests that CBD positively affects inflammation and pain, which are common concerns among athletes. On the other hand, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) does not list CBD as a prohibited substance.

This ambiguity raises many questions among athletes. Can they consume CBD? How can it affect their health? And, more importantly, is it ethical to use CBD to improve recovery and overall health? Below, you can find answers to these pressing questions.

What Is CBD and Does It Cause the High?

CBD is the abbreviation for cannabidiol – one of the most well-researched and popular substances found in cannabis. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD does not cause the high and has no addictive properties. However, it has proven therapeutic properties, helping with the following conditions:

    • Anxiety;
    • Stress;
    • Insomnia;
    • Inflammation;
    • Pain;
    • Seizures.

These characteristics made CBD a hot topic in the wellness community, so it is not surprising that it also caught athletes’ attention. Professional sports are extremely demanding, with athletes often experiencing chronic pain, inflammation, and stress. So, athletes are always on the lookout for…
