    Press Release

    Jan 4, 2023 08:00 PST

Extensiv (formerly 3PL Central) — delivering omnichannel software solutions for warehouse, inventory, and order management — today announced the winners of the Spring 2023 Supply Chain Scholarship. Now in its fourth year, the Extensiv scholarship program supports education for undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in supply chain management, logistics, and operations management programs.

“As 48% of third-party logistics (3PLs) providers cite that finding and retaining qualified workers is their top business challenge, we absolutely need to do more to attract new talent into this industry,” said Rachel Trindade, chief marketing officer at Extensiv. “We’ve created this scholarship to meet that need, to bring fresh ideas, different perspectives, and new voices into the supply chain. This year, Ashley, Noah, and Tess offered strong industry insight and vision balanced with real-world practical applications, which is exactly will drive the future of our industry.”

Extensiv, formerly 3PL Central, launched the Supply Chain Scholarship in Fall 2020, and has given more than $14,000 to scholarship winners and finalists. Past winners have focused on topics including how artificial intelligence (AI) can optimize end-to-end documentation, how 5G data transmission can speed the application of augmented reality (AR), and improvements within circular supply chains.

    Scholarship Winner

This year’s winner is Ashley McMillon, a student pursuing her B.S. in Information Systems and Supply Chain Management at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Ashley’s winning essay highlights the potential of AR to transform the supply chain, saying, “Starting with big tech companies such as Google, augmented reality will solve many logistical issues, provide employees with helpful guides and insights into their work, increase efficiency and productivity, and will streamline supply chain processes within logistical channels.”

“Thanks to your scholarship, I can continue to excel in university and obtain a degree in Information Systems and Supply Chain Management,” said Ashley McMillon, scholarship winner. “I am the first one in my family to attend university, so I will ensure that I make both you and my family proud. It is my goal to remain innovative and creative and continue to push the limits of technology for the betterment of the industry.”

Extensiv also extended awards to two runners-up: Noah Walker of Duquesne University and Tess Porter of Arizona State University.

Fall Scholarship Application Window Opens Feb. 1, 2023

On Feb. 1, 2023, Extensiv will open the scholarship application submissions again for the Fall 2023 semester scholarship, with the deadline to apply on June 1. • Extensiv Releases Third Annual Third-Party Logistics Warehouse Benchmark Report to Identify Key Logistics Growth, Labor, Capacity, and Technology Trends

Extensiv Releases Third Annual Third-Party Logistics Warehouse Benchmark Report to Identify Key Logistics Growth, Labor, Capacity, and Technology Trends

As Recessionary Clouds Darken and Inflation Remains High, 3PLs Look to Optimize Efficiencies to Drive Profitability

    Press Release

    Oct 27, 2022 07:00 PDT

Extensiv (formerly 3PL Central) — delivering omnichannel software solutions for warehouse, inventory, and order management — today announced the results of the Third-Party Logistics Warehouse Benchmark Report. This is the third annual and industry’s only benchmark report focused exclusively on the 3PL warehouse industry. This year’s report highlighted the success 3PLs performing omnichannel fulfillment saw related to order volume and profitability growth as compared to other 3PLs.

The Third-Party Logistics Warehouse Benchmark Report aggregates data from more than 200 3PL warehouses and provides insight on more than 30 industry-specific topics. The report builds on prior data and provides year-over-year changes and trends to help warehouses understand market growth opportunities and challenges facing the industry.

Key takeaways from the 2022 report include:

    • An increasing number of 3PLs grew volume and profitability: 3PLs fared even better than in past years, despite concerns about inflation, more significant labor constraints, and global uncertainty. 91% of 3PLs grew order volumes in 2022, up from 85% the year prior. 81% claimed higher profits this year, a slight increase from 79% last year.
    • Omnichannel strategies drove faster growth: 18% of 3PLs performing omnichannel fulfillment saw a 50% increase in profitability over the prior year, which is 33% more than the average of other 3PLs.
    • Successful 3PLs started to focus: This year, many 3PLs found success focusing on their strengths. For example, more 3PLs specialized in specific industries, with 3PL warehouses serving 2.9 industries — down from 3.5 industries last year.
    • Labor shortage compounded by increasing labor costs: 48% cite finding and retaining workers as a top business challenge that was also magnified by 79% of 3PLs stating that their labor costs increased in 2022.
    • Connectivity-led 3PL technology investments: EDI (51%), shopping cart (48%), and marketplace (25%) integrations showed major jumps from prior years as top technology integrated with warehouse management systems (WMS)
    • More than half of 3PLs fulfill orders in less than 90 minutes: To meet growing customer expectations, 60% of 3PLs fulfill orders less than 90 minutes after receipt, up from 53% last year. Further, the speed of order fulfillment is linked closely with annual order volume growth. Nearly a third fulfill orders in less than 30 minutes, up from 22% last year.
    • 3PLs focusing on functionalities that drive profitability: The top functionalities respondents plan on implementing in the coming year include billing and invoicing (32%) and mobile barcode scanning (27%). Top priorities include acquiring new customers, e-commerce growth, and automating processes.

Other key areas of the report include trends and key metrics related to growth opportunities, profitability, labor shortages, warehouse space limitations, technology integrations, and success measurements, among others. Although this year brought growing concerns around inflation, a recession, more significant labor constraints, and global uncertainty, 3PLs remain optimistic about the coming year.

“3PLs spent significant time integrating shopping carts and marketplaces to optimize their businesses in 2022, and connectivity is a theme that will continue into 2023. We found it interesting that 3PLs generally remain optimistic as they continue in an uncertain economic environment,” said Rachel Trindade, chief marketing officer at Extensiv. “Fifty-three percent (53%) of 3PLs are concerned about managing costs next year and 25% are concerned about inflation. They plan to face economic headwinds by finding greater efficiencies. With the Third-Party Logistics Warehouse Benchmark Report, the core insights provide 3PLs with access to industry benchmarks for planning and implementing best practices to support order and profitability growth in 2023.”

  • Extensiv and BUKU Integration Combines Streamlined Shipping Customer Experience With Intelligent Omnichannel Distribution Platform

Extensiv and BUKU Integration Combines Streamlined Shipping Customer Experience With Intelligent Omnichannel Distribution Platform

Building on the Extensiv Parcel API, BUKU Integration Offers 3PLs Reduced Shipping Costs and Expands Access to Carriers

    Press Release

    Aug 24, 2022

Extensiv – delivering omnichannel software solutions for warehouse, inventory, and order management – today announced an integration with BUKU Ship, a leading provider in eCommerce shipping CX solutions for 3PLs and brands.

With this integration, Extensiv’s 3PL customers will receive AI-driven shipping solutions to deliver amazing customer experiences, minimize errors, and turn shipping into a profit center. In addition, BUKU customers will be able to leverage Extensiv’s industry-leading 3PL Warehouse Management Solution (WMS) to better serve customers, operate their warehouses more efficiently, and increase growth.

The integration is made possible through the recent launch of Extensiv Parcel API. Parcel API builds on Extensiv 3PL Warehouse Manager’s Small Parcel Suite, a SaaS-based paperless warehouse efficiency solution for 3PLs offering ecommerce and omnichannel fulfillment. With the Small Parcel Suite, 3PL warehouses reduce packing time by 50% by offering order packing and packing from shelves.

The BUKU and Extensiv integration comes at a time when small parcel volume continues to rise. In 2021 roughly 2.14 billion people (27% of the world population) made online purchases, and that number is only projected to increase in 2022. As volumes continue to increase, so does the demand for enhanced small parcel shipping capabilities.

Benefits of the Extensiv/BUKU integration include:

    • Expanded shipping partners domestically and overseas: BUKU’s shipping software provides access to hundreds of integrations across the ecommerce shipping supply chain ecosystem. In addition to USPS, DHL, UPS and FedEx, BUKU supports  Landmark Global, OSM, Parcll, same-day carrier IndyShip and more. BUKU also has strategic alliances with international companies and customs authorities, offering international tax and duty estimation and IOSS filing for their customers.
    • High volume printing: BUKU enables high volume and batch printing. When combined with 3PL Warehouse Manager’s small parcel suite, 3PLs can efficiently print batches of hundreds of shipping labels enabling teams to hit delivery SLAs.
    • BUKU IntelliRate: BUKU uses cart psychology and dynamic rate shopping to display the lowest fully landed costs in the shopping cart at checkout, enabling brands to make more strategic decisions about shipping options and turn shipping into a profit center.
    • BUKU Dashboards: The BUKU team provides a strategic analysis of shipping & order data. BUKU provides live P&L dashboards for 3PLs to analyze all their shipments or a single store owner to gain valuable shipping insights to control costs, improve service, and focus investment to meet goals.

“We look forward to introducing our customers to Extensiv’s unique intelligent distribution platform while helping Extensiv customers streamline the shipping experience – saving time, increasing customer loyalty, and protecting profit margins. Our joint warehousing and shipping CX expertise will allow mid-size 3PLs to take the next step in their evolution,” said Ken Muir, CEO of BUKU. “The 3PL market is exploding and the increased demand requires new technology and approaches. Together, Extensiv and BUKU give 3PLs an unprecedented opportunity to expand their operations and profitability.”

“We’re thrilled to welcome BUKU to the Extensiv ecosystem. This space is rapidly evolving and it can be difficult for our customers to keep up with the latest transportation innovations,” said Andy Lloyd, CEO of Extensiv. “It’s our responsibility to keep up with those solutions. BUKU is a perfect example of that. The 3PL parcel shipping use case is a unique one and the BUKU team has a deep understanding of what a 3PL warehouse needs to be successful. Their expertise and technology will be a big boost for our mutual customers.”

Extensiv Launches New Platform to Improve Costs and Vendor Choices for Small Parcel Shipping

Extensiv’s Parcel API expands connectivity to allow 3PLs to ship orders more efficiently and win more business

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 9, 2022

Extensiv – delivering omnichannel software solutions for warehouse, inventory, and order management – today announced the launch of its Parcel API, a new application programming interface (API) for Extensiv 3PL Warehouse Manager customers that allows virtually any small parcel shipping provider to integrate to 3PL Warehouse Manager and make their services available to its 1,100+ 3PLs. Third-party logistics (3PL) providers can now quickly and easily add the most efficient and economical shipping option to support whatever shipping provider their customers demand, enabling 3PLs to win more business and operate more efficiently.

“Small parcel shipping is getting more difficult as major shipping carriers raise rates, increase surcharges, and stop working with smaller volume customers,” said Amit Kumar, Vice President of Product at Extensiv. “This volatility has driven innovation across the world of small parcel deliveries, with new providers emerging every day, including next and same day. The Parcel API is all about options and leverage, providing the most connected warehouse management system in the market for small parcel delivery options. The new API structure enhances our capabilities across multiple providers, helping our 3PL customers move beyond a limited number of shipping partners.”

    Extensiv’s Parcel API

Parcel API is an open platform that allows Extensiv 3PL Warehouse Manager customers to select the provider best suited to business needs, providing access to more options for carrier integration and provider services. With the Extensiv Parcel API and a growing list of shipping partners, 3PLs will be able to work with virtually any label provider, ensuring they receive the best shipping price and performance. Rather than relying on a single partner for capabilities, 3PLs can turn to Extensiv’s partner Ecosystem for more options, offering flexibility as needs change and supporting the best pricing and performance for shipping needs.

The Parcel API builds on Extensiv 3PL Warehouse Manager’s Small Parcel Suite, a SaaS-based paperless warehouse efficiency solution for 3PLs offering ecommerce and omnichannel fulfillment. With the Small Parcel Suite, 3PL warehouses reduce packing time by 50% by offering regular order packing and packing from shelves. The Small Parcel Suite drives accuracy by ensuring that verified orders are correct. In addition, Small Parcel Suite customers can save thousands per month on carrier fees by leveraging rate shopping rules to automatically print the lowest cost label.

Additional benefits of the Extensiv Parcel API:

    • Connection to the widest array of shipping partners: 3PL warehouses use a variety of carriers for shipping, but the market includes hundreds of carriers, including small, regional players. Each carrier has a unique offering through API connections, including specialty services.
    • Win more business: By having the flexibility to work with any carrier their customer needs and negotiate better shipping rates, 3PLs can differentiate their business and win more clients.
    • Reduced complexity of shipping integrations: Extensiv Parcel API helps users keep pace with the dynamic market through access to label providers.
    • Access to innovation: As this dynamic and growing sector of the industry evolves, Extensiv Parcel API will help provide access to new capabilities from well-established providers and exciting new entrants.
    • Enhanced high volume processing (HVP): By allowing 3PLs to process labels for many orders simultaneously, Extensiv Parcel API helps 3PLs operate warehouses more efficiently.
    • Lower shipping and transportation costs: Outside of labor, shipping and transportation are the largest expenses for warehouses. Leveraging pre-negotiated rates through Parcel API label partners, 3PLs can significantly reduce shipping costs.
    • Reduced chargeback expenses: Extensiv Parcel API minimizes the chances of incurring the steep chargebacks often billed for mismanaging shipments, such as penalties for printing a label with a non-valid service.

For carriers looking to offer their services to Extensiv 3PL Warehouse Manager customers, this opens a new avenue to integrate with the system. In the coming months, Extensiv will expand carrier programs with early adopter partners, as well as open participation to a broader array of third parties through the Parcel API.

Extensiv Launches Network Manager Enabling 3PLs to Build Collaborative Distributed Fulfillment Networks

New software empowers 3PLs to grow by creating and managing 4PL networks that expand their geographic footprint

    Press Release

    Jul 26, 2022

Extensiv – delivering omnichannel software solutions for warehouse, inventory, and order management – today announced Extensiv Network Manager to help third-party logistics (3PLs) providers build and manage networks of geographically distributed partner warehouses where a brand’s inventory is distributed across and shipped from multiple warehouses, enabling lower cost, expedited delivery options while retaining customer relationships, reducing risk and capital overhead.

Extensiv Network Manager combines software, services, tools, and relationships that empower any 3PL, even those operating out of a single warehouse, to partner closely with other 3PLs to service brands across multiple geographically distributed warehouses. Unlike current homegrown solutions that 3PLs may have cobbled together, Extensiv Network Manager offers the key capabilities necessary to build and operate a hybrid network, including sophisticated order routing rules as well as complete visibility and control over all orders regardless of which node is shipping them.

Until now, 3PLs looking to build this type of sophisticated fourth-party logistics (4PL) network have had to raise massive funding rounds to pay for the costly software development associated with these models. For the first time, Extensiv Network Manager offers a productized offering that allows even 3PLs with limited technical capabilities to build and operate a software-enabled fulfillment network to compete with the likes of Ship Bob and Deliverr. Additionally, unlike homegrown software solutions, Extensiv Network Manager is a cloud-based, fully productized and supported product that will continue to be developed and enhanced.

Extensiv Network Manager leverages the company’s deep experience working with 3PLs and its industry-leading 3PL warehouse operations platform to offer sophisticated fulfillment capabilities while continuing to operate their warehouses using 3PL Warehouse Manager. Consumer expectations are at an all-time high. Inflation has only increased the need to keep shipping costs down, but consumers still expect fast, and often next-day, delivery,” said David Miller, VP of strategy at Extensiv. “Single or even two warehouse fulfillment approaches force brands to choose between paying exorbitant prices for unprofitable expedited shipping or choosing low-cost saver services, which results in painfully slow delivery times.”

Early adopters have seen positive results already, with one customer, Rocket Shippers, using Extensiv Network Manager to lower shipping costs while decreasing transit times by intelligently routing orders to the best-fit fulfillment center in their network.

“The Network Manager team did an amazing job streamlining our order routing rules,” said Matthew Schneider, Senior Account Manager at Rocket Shippers. “Network Manager has made it so much easier to process Seller Fulfilled Prime orders in our network as well as providing inventory visibility across multiple facilities.”

Solving Problems for 3PLs and Brands

As a brand’s expectations of their fulfillment partners grow, 3PLs need a low-risk, low-cost option to bring customers distributed inventory and omnichannel fulfillment services while retaining direct relationships with these brands. Space restrictions, start-up costs, risk volatility, and other considerations keep smaller 3PLs from expanding into new facilities, thus limiting their ability to service growing brands and making their offering less competitive.

Many brands have tried to build their own multi-3PL fulfillment strategies to offer faster or less expensive delivery. In the modern technology-enabled supply chain, brands require the consistency of service that can only be delivered by operating on a standard technology platform with an identical configuration and shipping strategy across every node. In today’s era of heightened consumer expectations, brands need to efficiently support not just ecommerce deliveries, but omnichannel fulfillment. Extensiv Network Manager helps 3PLs deliver on these rising expectations.

    Introducing Extensiv Network Manager

Extensiv Network Manager enables 3PL warehouses to build relationships with other 3PLs to expand their footprint and compete at scale, while ensuring brands have a seamless and consistent experience across all the nodes. Extensiv Network Manager provides the technology to operate a reliable network of partner 3PL warehouses, working together to expand geographic reach, increase service offerings, and improve SLAs while reducing overall operating expenses for themselves and their customers.

3PLs utilize Extensiv Network Manager for:

    • Complete visibility: Inventory and transaction details are visible across all networked warehouses in a single, dedicated management portal. This eliminates duplicate entry and the confusion of multiple logins and systems.
    • Order Routing: Logic-based order routing and management tools automatically send orders to the best fulfillment center in the network based upon virtually unlimited business rules; seamless order flows from cart to the WMS (3PL Warehouse Manager) and back without duplicate setups or convoluted tagging, with real-time order processing status across all servicing facilities.
    • Seamless inventory management: A holistic view of inventory levels across network warehouses. Manage inventory throughout the network by seeing real-time levels and alerts.
    • Simplified setup and maintenance: Configurable cloud-based software eliminates complexity and can be set up with minimal time and effort. Add new fulfillment nodes with only a few clicks to start fulfilling across the network.

To complement Extensiv Network Manager’s software capabilities, Extensiv launched an array of services to guide 3PLs through the process of setting up a collaborative 4PL network. These services range from needs analysis, collaboration on partner identification based upon geography or service offering, as well as implementation services to initially configure the fulfillment network.

Extensiv Network Manager builds on the recently launched Extensiv Fulfillment Marketplace, a free resource that empowers 3PLs to identify potential network partners that offer a complementary geographic footprint and/or services.

Plus, with ready-made reporting on warehouse activity, locations, and shipments, 3PLs can dramatically cut the time it takes to prepare their monthly billing.

  • 3PL Central Rebrands as Extensiv, the Most Comprehensive and Collaborative Solution for the Supply Chain

3PL Central Rebrands as Extensiv, the Most Comprehensive and Collaborative Solution for the Supply Chain

The first to connect the supply chain from shopping cart to doorstep, Extensiv also launches Market Insights to guide organizations through ecommerce demand uncertainty

    Press Release

    May 23, 2022

3PL Central—delivering connected commerce omnichannel solutions that integrate systems for warehouse, inventory, and order management—is rebranding as Extensiv to better align to the full-scale, connected, and collaborative software capabilities it delivers to brands and 3PLs. Extensiv is also announcing the launch of Extensiv Market Insights. The free, continually-updated benchmark tool offers data-driven insights into ecommerce order volumes across key shopping sites.

Extensiv: Creating the Future of Omnichannel Fulfillment

Extensiv, formerly 3PL Central, connects the supply chain – from the shopping cart to the doorstep – with industry-leading technology that provides unparalleled simplicity and value to its customers. Extensiv’s intelligent distribution is used by warehouse professionals and entrepreneurial brands to transform fulfillment operations in the radically changing world of commerce and consumer expectations.

“The old paradigms of ecommerce and logistics software don’t work anymore,” said Andy Lloyd, CEO at Extensiv. “Legacy systems, like ERPs, are slow, fail to deliver the metrics that today’s 3PLs and brands need to stay competitive, and have become unwieldy with bolted-on integrations. Extensiv’s platform combines all the software capabilities required to build a seamlessly collaborative and modular fulfillment network that fits customers’ specific use cases. Modern fulfillment is built on speed, visibility, and resiliency between 3PLs and brands – and that’s what Extensiv was built to deliver.”

The decision to rebrand as Extensiv is the culmination of a strategic plan to offer ecommerce brands and third-party logistics (3PL) warehouses a new approach to growth. In 2021, 3PL Central acquired Skubana, Scout Software, and CartRover, eliminating the need for 3PLs and brands to piece together disparate solutions to build omnichannel fulfillment capabilities. Through its unrivaled network of more than 1,500 connected 3PLs and a suite of integrated, cloud-based warehouse and order management software, Extensiv connects brands and 3PLs to fulfill demand anywhere, anytime, with superior flexibility and ability to scale.

    Launch of Extensiv Market Insights

Extensiv is also launching Extensiv Market Insights, a new website that offers, for the first time, order volume trends for leading vendors such as Amazon and Shopify. Trend data is available at https://extensiv.com/market-insights

“For many years, brands have had to operate without visibility to whether business fluctuations represent macro-economic trends or something unique to their business,” said Sheridan Richey, CTO at Extensiv. “Extensiv Market Insights tracks volume trends from anonymized data across millions of orders to address this need. This represents part of our broader mission to leverage our cross-industry knowledge and experience to help our customers stay ahead of the demand curve.”

Initially, Extensiv Market Insights will show changes in order volume per merchant processed through leading vendors such as Amazon and Shopify, including:

    • Year-over-year volume trends. Extensiv Market Insights shows a macro view of year-over-year order volume trends beginning in 2020.
    • Week-over-week volume trends. Extensiv Market Insights also shows changes to order volumes on a week-over-week basis. This enables brands to benchmark their own results to the seasonality changes across the broader e-commerce landscape.

The first release of Extensiv Market Insights shows:

    • Unprecedented pandemic volumes. The onset of the pandemic drove record order volumes for Amazon and Shopify in 2020 between March and May and again in November and December.
    • Amazon is beating 2021 volumes this year. Early indications are that Amazon is beating its 2021 volumes, but that Shopify is lagging behind its 2021 numbers.
