The privatization of space travel continued apace, with companies like Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin making strides this year. Despite privatization and looming funding cuts, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and its various projects and endeavors still managed to surprise us and expand our knowledge of our solar system. Check out the 10 best space stories from the past year:No. 1 — The space saga of Butch and SuniWithout a doubt, the space story that filled the most airtime this year was the tale of NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams. In June 2024, the pair signed on for a NASA mission to conduct a crew flight test of Boeing’s Starliner craft, which had previously only been used for uncrewed tests between Earth and the International Space Station. The mission was meant to last eight days — but ended up lasting more than nine months. The stranded astronauts became space celebrities and brought renewed attention to spaceflight during a time when space travel has morphed into a blend of public-private partnerships. The name of the game in space exploration in the 21st century has become about repetition and reliability — typified by the reusable rockets favored by private space companies. NASA’s upcoming moon mission, Artemis III, will require a lot of fuel and power, especially if NASA wants to eventually station astronauts there. Add in the fact that China and Russia have announced a joint space venture to place a nuclear reactor on the moon. Before long, the international powers will be in a new space race. The moon is also becoming a critical juncture in the effort to reach Mars — the rocky satellite’s low gravity would make space missions easier. In that way, stating a goal of putting a nuclear reactor on the moon is the first step to reaching Mars, another stated goal of NASA. (The small moon Cordelia orbits just inside the outermost ring, but is not visible in these views due to glare from the rings.) Due to the drastic differences in brightness levels, the image is a composite of three different treatments of the data, allowing the viewer to see details in the planetary atmosphere, the surrounding rings, and the orbiting moons. The data was taken with NIRCam’s wide band F150W2 filter that transmits infrared wavelengths from about 1.0 to 2.4 microns.

  • Interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS will fly by Earth Friday — Here’s how you can see it

    An interstellar comet first spotted passing through our solar system in July is beginning its departure from our corner of the universe — but first it will fly by Earth, and scientists are capturing stunning new images during its approach.Related video above: Why asteroid 2024 YR4 is unlikely to hit Earth in 2032Known as 3I/ATLAS, the comet will make its closest pass by us on Friday, coming within about 167 million miles (270 million kilometers) of our planet, but on the other side of the sun. For reference, the sun’s distance from Earth is about 93 million miles (150 million kilometers).Comet 3I/ATLAS won’t be visible to the naked eye and the optimal viewing window, which opened in November, has passed.     An interstellar comet first spotted passing through our solar system in July is beginning its departure from our corner of the universe — but first it will fly by Earth, and scientists are capturing stunning new images during its approach.

    Known as 3I/ATLAS, the comet will make its closest pass by us on Friday, coming within about 167 million miles (270 million kilometers) of our planet, but on the other side of the sun. For reference, the sun’s distance from Earth is about 93 million miles (150 million kilometers).

    Comet 3I/ATLAS won’t be visible to the naked eye and the optimal viewing window, which opened in November, has passed. Those hoping to glimpse it will need an 8-inch (20-centimeter) telescope or larger, according to EarthSky.

    The Virtual Telescope Project will share a livestream of the comet at 4:00 a.m. UTC on Saturday, or 11 p.m. ET Friday, after cloudy weather prevented a Thursday night streaming opportunity, said Gianluca Masi, astronomer and astrophysicist at the Bellatrix Astronomical Observatory in Italy and founder and scientific director of the Virtual Telescope Project.

    The comet is expected to remain visible to telescopes and space missions for a few more months before exiting our solar system, according to NASA.

    Astronomers have closely tracked the comet since its initial discovery over the summer in the hopes of uncovering details about its origin outside of our solar system as well as its composition. Multiple missions have observed the object in optical, infrared and radio wavelengths of light — and recently, scientists captured their first glimpses in X-rays to and discovered new details.

    The ingredients of an interstellar comet

    Comets are like dirty snowballs left over from the formation of solar systems.

    A comet’s nucleus is its solid core, made of ice, dust and rocks. When comets travel near stars such as the sun, heat causes them to release gas and dust, which creates their signature tails.

  • Radio Signal Crushes Alien Theory About Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS

    Ever since astronomers first detected interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS in July, speculation about its true nature has run wild. Some experts speculate it isn’t a comet at all but rather an extraterrestrial spacecraft sent to sniff around our solar system.

    New evidence has dumped cold water on this provocative hypothesis. MeerKAT, a radio telescope operated by the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory, recently detected a radio signal from 3I/ATLAS. Before you get excited, this isn’t a technological radio signal used for transmission. It’s a natural radio emission and some of the strongest evidence yet that 3I/ATLAS is a naturally occurring comet.

    The astronomers who identified the signal posted a brief description of their findings on The Astronomer’s Telegram, a website where researchers announce new astronomical discoveries. They explain that MeerKAT detected lines of radio absorption by hydroxyl radicals (OH) at two different frequencies: 1,665 megahertz and 1,667 megahertz. This indicates that 3I/ATLAS was behaving like a normal comet as it zipped around the Sun last month.

    D.J. Pisano, a researcher and professor of extragalactic multi-wavelength astronomy at the University of Cape Town, reported the findings alongside several collaborators. The findings have not yet been peer reviewed.

    What MeerKAT’s discovery means

    Between July and October, astronomers kept a close eye on 3I/ATLAS as it approached the Sun. MeerKAT observed the comet on October 24—just five days before 3I/ATLAS reached its closest point to our home star, also known as perihelion.

    The closer a comet is to perihelion, the faster it sublimates due to increasing solar radiation. This is when ice on the comet’s surface rapidly transitions from a solid to a gas without entering an intermediate liquid state. It’s also what gives comets their signature comas and tails.

    During sublimation, each frozen water molecule (H2O) on the comet’s surface splits into a hydroxyl radical (OH) and a hydrogen atom (H). Thus, hydroxyl radicals are a product—and therefore an indicator—of cometary sublimation.

    If 3I/ATLAS were a metal spacecraft, telescopes wouldn’t detect these molecules. Previous failed attempts to spot them helped fuel speculation that this interstellar object could be technological—a hypothesis first proposed by Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb and colleagues. In a blog post about MeerKAT’s new findings, Loeb acknowledged the new findings and the apparent natural cometary phenomena at play but still did not explicitly rule out a technological explanation.

    Not just a comet

    Just because 3I/ATLAS is almost definitely a natural comet, that doesn’t mean it isn’t extraordinary. It’s only the third interstellar object ever discovered by astronomers, and its highly unusual characteristics offer a glimpse of the far-off solar system it hails from.

    Astronomers have found evidence to suggest that 3I/ATLAS contains one of the highest carbon dioxide to water ratios ever seen in a comet and that it could be older than our solar system. Another preprint study shows that 3I/ATLAS exhibits “extreme negative polarization” that suggests it is a completely new type of comet—unlike any observed before.

    3I/ATLAS is now departing our solar system, but astronomers—and several deep-space probes—will still have opportunities to study it before it disappears. The more information scientists gather about this interstellar visitor, the more it seems to surprise us.

  • This Visiting Interstellar Comet Just Keeps Getting Weirder

    Ever since interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS whizzed into our cosmic neighborhood in July, astronomers have been racing to uncover its characteristics. Now that the powerful James Webb Space Telescope has taken a good look at this icy interloper, it seems to be weirder than anyone imagined.

    A preprint submitted to the Astrophysical Journal Letters for peer review on Monday, August 25, describes the first results from JWST’s survey of 3I/ATLAS.

    A team of astronomers observed the comet with the telescope’s Near-Infrared Spectroscopic (NIRSpec) instrument to measure the composition of its coma—the cloud of gas and dust that surrounds its nucleus—and determine what drives its activity. Their surprising findings bring 3I/ATLAS’s origin into clearer focus, helping astronomers retrace the comet’s long journey to our solar system.

    3I/ATLAS, detected by the ATLAS (Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System) survey telescope on July 1, is only the third interstellar object ever discovered. These celestial bodies hail from star systems beyond our own. Studying them offers a glimpse of the conditions and processes that shaped these distant systems. Over the past two months, researchers have already uncovered unprecedented details about this latest cosmic visitor.

    JWST spies unusual characteristics

    Now, JWST has revealed even more of 3I/ATLAS’s distinctive features. Most comets have comas dominated by water, but this one is chock-full of carbon dioxide, according to the study. In fact, the researchers found that its ratio of carbon dioxide to water is among the highest ever observed in any comet. This may indicate that 3I/ATLAS has a nucleus that’s intrinsically rich in carbon dioxide, suggesting it formed in an environment with higher levels of radiation than our solar system.

    Alternatively, the carbon dioxide-dominated coma may indicate that 3I/ATLAS formed near the CO2 ice line within the protoplanetary disk that surrounded its parent star, according to the researchers. This is the distance from a young star where the temperature drops low enough for carbon dioxide gas to freeze into ice. What’s more, the lack of water in the coma points to unusual surface properties—or perhaps an insulating crust—that may prevent heat from penetrating the comet’s icy core.

    A comet unlike any other

    These new findings suggest the comet formed under conditions far different from those in our corner of the galaxy, adding to a growing list of traits that make it unlike any seen before. Prior to this JWST survey, astronomers found evidence to suggest 3I/ATLAS is the oldest interstellar comet ever discovered—potentially older than our solar system. This, coupled with its trajectory, suggests it originated from a relatively old, low-metallicity star system in the Milky Way’s “thick disk”—the part of the galaxy that contains 10% of its total stellar mass.

    Astronomers have put forth a wealth of astonishing new information about 3I/ATLAS since its discovery, but this is only the beginning. Experts expect this comet to remain observable through mid-2026, providing ample research opportunities. The more information scientists gather on this interstellar object, the closer they’ll get to unraveling the secrets of its origin.
