Running through December, the pop-up features live music, elegant holiday décor and a limited-edition cocktail menu created with Royal Wine, Rémy Cointreau and Bacardi, including festive sippers like the Santa Clausmopolitan, GingerBERG Nog and Dubai Chocolate Martini. Wednesday hours run 5–10 p.m. with the kitchen open until 9 and a $25 cover that includes the first cocktail. Thursday offers dinner seating from 6:30–9 p.m. and cocktails and light bites from 10 p.m.–close; Friday and Saturday carry a $50 cover (Thursday–Saturday) that also includes the first drink and no minimum spend.

This season, Berg Hospitality is giving Houstonians a reason to pause with its new “5 at 5” special — $5 mini martinis during the 5 o’clock hour across many of its concepts. For a limited time, guests can stop by on weekdays from 5 to 6 p.m. for a perfectly chilled mini martini made their way. The special is available at Annabelle Brasserie, B&B Butchers, B.B. On Friday, November 28, folks can hit PKL’s second annual Thanksgiving Classic Tournament, offering a fun excuse to get out of the house and enjoy some friendly post-holiday competition.

Medium Rare will debut its iconic Thanksgiving Day tradition, the Turkey Fry, in Houston this year, open to anyone who brings a fully thawed turkey (up to 10 pounds) to be safely fried — for free — by the experts. Bring your bird to Medium Rare Houston, 3201 Louisiana, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 27. While Medium Rare co-owner Mark Bucher assures they will try to get to everyone, it is a first-come, first-served basis.

On Saturday, November 29, Bas’s Cheesesteaks will be popping up at Third Place, 420 East 20th, slinging its Philly style cheesesteaks from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (or until sold out). The thinly-sliced halal ribeye comes loaded into seeded hoagie rolls with mayo and melty white cheese with (or without) grilled onions, with add-ons including sweet, bell, hot, or Italian long hot peppers, habanero aioli and ketchup. Meals can be rounded out with fries and/or a Pudgy’s deli cookie.

Traveler’s Cart, 1401 Montrose, recently transitioned from counter-service to full-service as owners Thy and Matthew Mitchell evolve the concept to put an even greater emphasis on service and hospitality. With the full-service transition comes several new offerings, including Thai Chili Queso, Baja Shrimp Tacos, Chicken Lo Mein, Salmon Donburi, Chicken Parmesan, Vietnamese Cha Ca and Steak Frites. New cocktails include a Mexican Espresso Martini and a Pandan Sticky Rice Old Fashioned.

  • 8th Annual WCSX I Thank You Luncheon Honors Our Veterans

    [ad_1]

The honor and legacy of over one dozen of Metro Detroit finest to serve the Red, White, and Blue was on full display at Buddy’s Pizza in Warren on November 10th as the Eighth Annual 94.7 WCSX Big Jim’s House I Thank You Luncheon took place.

The luncheon serves as an opportunity to recognize local veterans from each branch of the military. The emcee of the event was none other than Big Jim‘s House host and veteran himself Jim O’Brien.

I Thank You Luncheon Appreciates Veterans in Attendance

For the veterans in attendance, it was a chance to sit down with the fellow brothers and sisters in uniform to share stories, share recognition, as well as remember all of those that answered the call of duty when it was bestowed or asked of them by their country.

The luncheon also served as a moment for veterans to enjoy some of the finest pizza made in Metro Detroit courtesy of Buddy’s Pizza. To be a part of the luncheon, 94.7 WCSX accepted nominations from family members and friends of the honored veterans to attend the luncheon.

As the luncheon started, a few words were shared by Big Jim himself on what it means to be a part of this shared experience.

“It is an honor to be with all of you here at buddies. We are all brothers and sisters in uniform regardless of what we wear today. God bless each of you and to all the men and women who serve and have served. We must also thank the families as well who stay behind as we sign up for the greatest honor and sacrifice both for our country and ourselves.”

O’Brien served in the US Navy Submarine core before starting his career in radio. The sentiment in the room was equally felt by those who attended the luncheon with their nominated Veteran as Big Jim commented further.

“A veteran is someone who at one point in their life, wrote a blank check, made payable to the United States of America for an amount up to and including their life.”

In addition to the sponsorship from Buddy’s Pizza playing as restaurant host, additional sponsors of the luncheon also included, First State Bank, Kajy Law, and Performance Remodeling. These sponsors contributed with a goodie bag for each of the veterans in attendance. These items included a scarf, warming gloves, a tote bag, hat, shirt. A surprised gift from Performance Remodeling also included a $100 gift for each of the veterans in attendance as a small gesture of kindness as thanks to their unwavering service to this great country.

94.7 WCSX joined in on the contagious generosity by providing each veteran with a pair of tickets to the upcoming Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert taking place this December at Little Caesars Arena.

While one day out of the year serves as a day to honor veterans every day is a day that we can thank someone who served their country and remember those who are no longer with us and provided the ultimate sacrifice to allow us the freedoms that we have today.

Every Veteran has a story to share

When you see a veteran, thank them for their service listen to their journey and stories. Let them know that their sacrifices will never be forgotten, and that they should never be ashamed for their service to their country.

A thank you to our sponsors Amy of First State Bank, Courtney of Kajy Law, Jason and Rich of Performance Remodeling and to Katie of Buddy’s Pizza.

To our Veterans in attendance, Brian, Robert, Dale, Dennis, Zach, Michael, Kyle, Curtis, Tom, Athena, Russ, David, Earl, and Kenneth. Thank you for your service, your time, and your love for country and fandom to 94.7 WCSX.

To quote former President Ronald Reagan; “Some people live in entire lifetime and wonder if they have ever made a difference in the world. A veteran doesn’t have that problem.”

  • Five Educators Selected as STEM Grant Recipients by the Environmental Education Initiative

    [ad_1]

Charlotte, NC (Tuesday, November 4, 2025) – The Environmental Education Initiative today announced the five 2025-2026 recipients of The National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF) Greening STEM Grant. The Environmental Education Initiative by Discovery Education with NEEF and other partners is a first-of-its-kind program designed to engage students in environmental science, empower them to make informed decisions for healthy environments, and promote civic engagement. Discovery Education is the maker of essential PreK-12 learning solutions used in classrooms around the world.

The Greening STEM Grants support programs that infuse environmental science and resources into school curriculum focused on student-directed investigations of relevant topics of research, local environmental issues, or issues impacting local public lands.

“Through these grants, we seek to challenge formal and nonformal educators to design and deliver STEM programming that engages youth in place-based learning,” said Robert Sendrey, program director for environmental education at NEEF. “We also hope to empower educators to build a culture that values using the environment as a context for improving student learning and achievement.”

Projects that actively involved students in citizen/community science or environmental monitoring during the 2025–2026 school year were especially highlighted, reflecting the value of experiential, place-based STEM education. The following projects have been selected to receive up to $7,000 each in STEM grant funding:

    Growing Green
Fairfield County School District in Winnsboro, South Carolina

The “Growing Green” project is a student-led greenhouse initiative in Winnsboro, South Carolina, focused on hands-on environmental STEM learning for Grades 5-6. The project involves 80 students and aims to enhance 21st-century skills through immersive learning of earth and life sciences. Instructional strategies integrate Greening STEM methods, including project-based and community-based approaches. Project partners include Fairfield Career and Technology Center, Sandhill Research and Education Center, and various other stakeholders.

Exploring Earth & Beyond: Connecting Local Learning to the Cosmos
Fairfield County School District in Winnsboro, South Carolina

During this interdisciplinary project for Grades 5-6, approximately 100 students will explore concepts related to Earth’s place in the universe, light and shadows, and gravitational force through place-based investigations, moon phase journals, digital and 3D scale model building, and interactive science labs using real data. The project will culminate with a field trip to the South Carolina State Museum Planetarium in Columbia, South Carolina, where students will participate in a full-dome immersive planetarium show and interact with museum exhibits that reinforce classroom learning. Partners include the South Carolina State Museum Planetarium, local STEM professionals, and community members.

    School Garden
R.E. Davis College Preparatory Academy in Sumter, South Carolina

This project involves a school garden initiative that integrates STEM classes and an after-school gardening club. The anticipated impact includes teaching over 20 students gardening skills in small spaces. Instructional strategies involve student involvement, community support, and curriculum integration, including project-based learning and the use of a Garden STEM science curriculum. Local partners like the Clemson University Cooperative Extension and Sumter County Master Gardeners Association will support gardening projects and educational activities. Additionally, the project will task students with designing robots that could help improve classroom learning while enhancing productivity in the school garden.

    Bengal Biodiesel
Blythewood High School, Richland School District Two in Blythewood, South Carolina

The Bengal Biodiesel program at Blythewood High School recycles cooking oil into biodiesel for school transport and produces hand soap from glycerin waste. Funding for this project will help expand the existing biodiesel program while partnering with organizations for student learning experiences and training students to become leaders in sustainability. Approximately 40 students will gain marketable skills and over 100 hours of hands-on experience through the program, which involves producing biodiesel for school buses. The program has partnered with organizations such as the Palmetto Clean Fuels Coalition, South Carolina Energy Office, and Green Energy Biofuel to provide internships, industry-standard procedures, and audits to enhance the student experience.

    Free Home Green Team
Free Home Elementary School in Canton, Georgia

The “Free Home Green Team” project at Free Home Elementary School aims to implement a Greening STEM project involving school-wide recycling and STEM activities to reduce their carbon footprint, expand existing STEM programs, and engage 300 students in real-time environmental impact awareness. The project includes instructional strategies focusing on real-world conservation, data collection, and hands-on experiences with the school’s STEM Cart, which has developmentally appropriate STEM games and activity kits for each grade level. Project partners include Free Home Elementary’s Green School Coordinator—who is responsible for showing students which materials are acceptable to recycle at bins located around campus—and the local PTA, which will help achieve project goals of reducing plastic use, lowering energy costs, and increasing community engagement.

The funding recipients were selected from among the members of the Discovery Educator Network, or DEN. A global community of education professionals, the DEN connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable idea sharing and inspiration. This year, the DEN is celebrating 20 years of connecting educators to their most valuable resource: each other.

Research shows that students thrive when classroom lessons are engaging and connected to the broader world. These real-world connections not only strengthen critical thinking but also boost academic achievement. We’re proud to celebrate each of the STEM Grant recipients for their innovative work in expanding the learning beyond the classroom,” said Catherine Dunlop, Senior Vice President of Corporate Partnerships at Discovery Education. “Together with NEEF, we’re excited to support these transformative projects and watch them come to life.”

  • San Bernardino City Unified School District Broadens Collaboration with Discovery Education to Advance STEAM Learning for All Students

    [ad_1]

Charlotte, NC (Monday, November 3, 2025)—California’s San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) today announced it has broadened its collaboration with Discovery Education to advance STEAM education across the district. Through this expanded partnership the district has doubled the number of schools using a suite of innovative digital tools that engage students and drive academic achievement. Discovery Education is the maker of essential PreK-12 learning solutions used in classrooms around the world.

Located in the heart of San Bernardino, California, SBCUSD provides a comprehensive education through a diverse array of academic programs and innovative learning pathways serving nearly 50,000 students. Guided by a commitment to equity, safety, and collaboration, SBCUSD’s dedicated educators foster an inclusive environment where every student is encouraged to discover their unique strengths and pursue excellence. The district’s family-centered approach and strong community partnerships empower students to thrive academically and socially, nurturing responsible citizenship and lifelong learning. Through its Vision 2030 initiative, SBCUSD celebrates cultural diversity and invests in creative, resilient teaching practices that prepare students to succeed in school, career, and life.

To support the principles of the Vision 2030 initiative and prepare district students for success beyond graduation, SBCUSD has created a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) program. SBCUSD’s STEAM program fosters problem solving, inquiry, creativity, and innovation in order to prepare students for both college and career.

To support SBCUSD’s STEAM program, district leaders sought additional digital resources that would engage students in interdisciplinary STEAM learning in new and innovative ways. Following a review of potential solutions, the district moved to integrate Discovery Education Experience into 11 additional schools, bringing the total number of schools in the district using this resource to 21.

The essential companion for engaged classrooms, Discovery Education Experience is a supplemental cross-curricular digital resource that inspires teachers, motivates students, and supports instruction in all academic disciplines. Designed expressly for K-12 schools, Experience delivers all-in-one, ready-to-teach lessons and strategies, exciting career exploration resources, standards-aligned content, and flexible tools for differentiation and assessment. Earlier this year, Discovery Education announced a host of new enhancements to Discovery Education Experience that includes new tools and resources, AI technology, additional career explorations, and more.

Discovery Education Experience will be used alongside two other Discovery Education solutions already used in classrooms across the district: Discovery Education Science Techbook and Mystery Science

“It’s critical for us to offer students engaging STEAM lessons that connect classroom instruction to the real world and that build the critical skills needed for future success” said Caitlin Arakawa, STEAM Program Specialist at SBCUSD. “We are excited to deepen our partnership with Discovery Education and bring these powerful tools to more classrooms across the district.”

SBCUSD educators using the new solutions from Discovery Education will receive dedicated professional development from the company’s team of professional learning experts. These learning opportunities for teachers help schools recognize the full return on their edtech investment. Through Discovery Education’s interactive professional development sessions, participants will learn best practices for integrating their new digital resources into instruction. Effective professional learning increases student engagement and supports the continued academic development of all students.

In addition, all educators using Discovery Education’s digital resources have access to the Discovery Educator Network or DEN. A global community of education professionals, the DEN connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable idea sharing and inspiration.  Recently, the DEN celebrated 20 years of connecting educators to their most valuable resource: each other. Educators interested in learning more about this powerful professional learning community and joining the DEN can learn more here

“Discovery Education is proud to support San Bernardino City Unified School District’s work to create a world-class STEAM program,” said Rachel Merten, Discovery Education Account Executive. “The expansion of this long-term partnership will help scale the tremendous work already underway.”

For more information about Discovery Education’s award-winning digital resources and professional learning solutions, visit www.discoveryeducation.com, and stay connected with Discovery Education on social media through LinkedInInstagramTikTok, and Facebook.

  • Are the White House projects under Trump and Obama similar?

    [ad_1]

President Donald Trump demolished the White House’s East Wing, startling historic preservationists and drawing national ire on his way to building what he says will be a new 90,000-square-foot ballroom.

Amid criticism of this projected $300 million project, Trump’s defenders are pointing to another White House renovation in recent memory to suggest the current outrage is unwarranted.

“A CNN report from 2010: $376 million White House renovation during the Obama Administration,” read an Oct. 22 X post that shared a 25-second clip of a CNN news story. “Where was the Democrat outrage then?”

“BREAKING,” read another X post that reshared the same video clip. “People are digging up a 2010 CNN clip showing Obama’s $376M White House makeover — all paid for by taxpayers. Meanwhile President Trump’s $250M ballroom is coming out of his own pocket.”

Obama was president during a White House renovation. But differences between that project and Trump’s project are significant.

Congress in 2008 approved funding for White House work after a government report produced  during President George W. Bush’s second term found the building needed upgrades to its water pipes and electrical systems, CNN reported in 2010. The changes improved heating, cooling, and fire alarm systems that hadn’t been updated since 1902 or 1934.

Bob Peck, then commissioner of the U.S. General Services Administration’s Public Buildings Service, told CNN in 2010 that the White House sometimes experienced power outages and leaky pipes.

Obama’s underground renovations affected mainly the building’s interior.

Separately, the Obamas in 2009 updated and redecorated the White House’s interior without using taxpayer money. The New York Times reported in 2020 that the White House’s new furnishings were paid for largely with Obama’s book royalties and donations. Obama also adapted the White House tennis court so it could be used as a basketball court.

Trump’s East Wing demolition and ballroom addition have not been approved by the federal agency that oversees federal building construction and renovations. Trump said the project aims to expand the East Wing’s seating capacity from 200 people to 999.

The White House originally said the project would cost $200 million, but Trump has since said it will be $300 million, funded by donations. Donors include individuals and corporations such as Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft, The Washington Post reported.

“It’s unprecedented, in all the wrong ways, including that the American public has been kept totally in the dark about the President’s plans,” said Sara Bronin, Freda H. Alverson professor of law at the George Washington University Law School.

Priya Jain, chair of the Society of Architectural Historians’ Heritage Conservation Committee, pushed back against calling Trump’s project a renovation: “This project involves total destruction of a large part of the building,” she said.

Obama’s era project covered renovations, Trump’s knocked down a whole wing

The Obama-era renovation started in 2010 with an estimated $376 million cost to improve the East and West Wings’ infrastructure, CNN reported in 2010.

Peck described the project as largely underground utility work. “It doesn’t do a whole lot of good to have a building that’s the sort of the image of the free world standing up there and not functioning well,” Peck told CNN when questioned about the cost.

Bloomberg News reported in 2010 that the Obama renovation was the biggest White House upgrade since President Harry Truman was in office. From 1948 to 1952, Truman oversaw the White House’s historic gutting, renovation and expansion in response to significant structural issues that at one point resulted in the leg of his daughter’s piano breaking through the floor.

Trump’s project will be the first major exterior change of the White House in 83 years, historic preservationists say.

“Such a significant change to a historic building of this import should follow a rigorous and deliberate design and review process,” the Society of Architectural Historians said in an Oct. 16 statement.

Since taking office a second time, Trump has also added gold highlights inside the Oval Office and paved over the Rose Garden lawn. The National Park Service oversaw the Rose Garden project.

The presidents’ projects differ in federal agency approval

At a September meeting of the National Capital Planning Commission —  the federal agency that oversees federal building construction and renovations — the Trump-appointed commission chair Will Scharf said the agency has no jurisdiction over “demolition and site preparation work,” only over construction and “vertical build.” The commission was expected to meet Nov. 6, but it’s unclear whether that will happen if the federal government shutdown continues.

PolitiFact looked at National Planning Commission’s Project Search for approval records of the Obama renovations, but the database doesn’t have records before Jan. 2012. We reached out to the commission to ask if they approved the 2010 renovations, but received no response because of their closure.

The White House is exempt from Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, which says that each federal agency must consider public views and concerns about historic preservation when making final project decisions. Michael Spencer, an associate professor in the University of Mary Washington’s historic preservation department said presidents have nevertheless typically undertaken White House projects in the spirit of public transparency. The National Planning Commission and the Commission of Fine Arts approved Trump’s first-term term tennis facility alterations, for example.

“Most importantly none of these projects involved demolition of existing historic buildings,” Jain said.

The East Colonnade and East Wing were built in 1902 and 1942, respectively, and, under National Park Service guidelines, should have been assessed for historic significance before being demolished, she said.

PolitiFact Researcher Caryn Baird contributed to this report.

  • 13-Year-Old from California Named America’s Top Young Scientist for Inventing Innovative Fall Detection Home Safety System

    [ad_1]

ST. PAUL, Minn. & CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Wednesday, October 15, 2025) 3M (@3M) and Discovery Education (@DiscoveryEd) named Kevin Tang, an 8th grader at Cedarlane Academy of the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District in Hacienda Heights, California, as the winner of the 2025 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the nation’s premier middle school science competition. Kevin distinguished himself with a novel fall detection device that can accelerate emergency responses to falls among older adults at home, even in the dark. As the grand prize winner, he received a $25,000 cash prize and the prestigious title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.”

Kevin spent the last four months competing against nine other finalists and ultimately secured himself the win during final Challenge events at 3M global headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Oct. 13 and 14. The finalists had to navigate a series of scientific tasks and were evaluated on their communication and presentation skills, ingenuity, innovative thinking, application of STEM principles, demonstration of passion and research, and the ability to inspire others.

Kevin’s custom in-home device uses video analysis and smart alerts to protect older adults in their homes. It can recognize falls with high accuracy, even at night. Research from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds that falls are the leading cause of injury among 1 in 4 older adults annually, or over 14 million people. Kevin created an algorithm that analyzes video input to identify falls and triggers alerts to loved ones via a corresponding smart phone application. His new solution advances current offerings on the market through the ability to capture imagery at night and provide around-the-clock monitoring. The device can also detect irregular movements while the individual is walking, which could be a symptom of a stroke.

“By tapping into their curiosity and reimagining what’s possible, these impressive finalists have developed solutions to real-world problems,” said Torie Clarke, 3M’s executive vice president and chief public affairs officer. “Year after year, the 3M Young Scientist Challenge demonstrates the power of science to create positive impact and emphasizes that the next great innovation can come from anywhere. We are so proud of this year’s competitors and can’t wait to see what they accomplish next.”

Each 3M Young Scientist Challenge finalist is paired with a 3M scientist who mentors and works with them one-on-one over the summer to transform their ideas from concept to prototype. This year’s winner was paired with Dr. Mark Gilbertson, research specialist, robotics and AI, Advanced Materials and Transportation.

“Kevin’s journey into the world of falls and strokes was sparked by personal experiences, and it’s inspiring to see how he’s using that to make a difference,” said Dr. Gilbertson. “His project is a powerful reminder of how science can be both personal and universal. I hope he continues diving deeper into robotics and AI – his potential in these fields is immense.”

The second and third place winners from the 2025 3M Young Scientist Challenge also receive special recognition, including a $1,000 prize. This year’s runners-up are:

    • Amaira Srivastava from Gilbert, AZ, a 9th grader at Arizona College Prep High School of the Chandler Unified School District
    • Anirudh Rao from Lone Tree, CO, an 8th grader at STEM School Highlands Ranch of the Douglas County School District

The remaining top finalists from the 2025 3M Young Scientist Challenge in alphabetical order by last name, are:

    • Shrey Arora from Collierville, TN, a 9th grader at Collierville High School of Collierville Schools
    • Divyam Desai from Frisco, TX, an 8th grader at Lamar and Norma Hunt Middle School of the Frisco Independent School District
    • Kiyara Gunawardena from Temecula, CA, a 6th grader at iShine Student Center
      of Springs Charter Schools
    • Isha Marla from Portland, OR, a 9th grader at Jesuit High School
    • Reanna Bhuyan Patel from Princeton, NJ, a 9th grader at Princeton Day School
    • Sheyna Patel from Longwood, FL, a 9th grader at Orlando Science High School of Orange County Public Schools
    • Aniket Sarkar from Folsom, CA, an 8th grader at Sacramento Country Day School

“We are incredibly proud to continue our longstanding collaboration with 3M. During the tenure of this powerful partnership, the nation’s best and brightest have created innovative solutions to the world’s most complex problems. Congratulations to Kevin and each of the finalists. Your fantastic work gives me great hope for the future,” said Amy Nakamoto, executive vice president of corporate partnerships and marketing at Discovery Education.

Now in its 18th year, the 3M Young Scientist Challenge continues to inspire and challenge middle school students to think creatively and apply the power of STEM to discover real-world solutions. Former America’s Top Young Scientists have given TED Talks, filed patents, founded nonprofits, and made the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. These young innovators have also been named TIME Magazine’s Kid of the Year; featured in The New York Times Magazine, Forbes, and Business Insider; and appeared on national television programs such as Good Morning America, The Kelly Clarkson Show, and more. In addition, a 3M Young Scientist Challenge Alumni Network was formed in fall 2022 and includes more than 100 former challenge winners, finalists, and mentors, who take part in networking opportunities and more.

The award-winning competition supplements the 3M and Discovery Education program Young Scientist Lab, which provides no-cost dynamic digital resources for students, teachers, and families to explore, transform, and innovate the world around them. All the resources are also available on Discovery Education Experience, the essential companion for engaged PreK-12 classrooms.

  • Nobel Prize in physics goes to trio of researchers for discoveries in quantum mechanics

    [ad_1]

The 2025 Nobel Prize in physics has been awarded to a trio of scientists – a Briton, a Frenchman and an American – for their ground-breaking discoveries in the field of quantum mechanics.John Clarke, Michel Devoret and John Martinis will share the prize “for the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantization in an electric circuit,” the Nobel Committee announced Tuesday at a ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden. The committee praised the laureates for demonstrating that the “bizarre properties of the quantum world can be made concrete in a system big enough to be held in the hand.”Clarke, taking questions at a news conference, said he was “completely stunned” to learn he had won the award.“We had not realized in any way that this might be the basis of a Nobel Prize,” Clarke said of their research in the 1980s at the University of California, Berkeley.Quantum mechanics, which describes how matter and energy behaves at or below the scale of an atom, allows a particle to pass straight through a barrier, in a process called “tunnelling.”But when a larger number of particles are involved, these quantum mechanical effects usually become insignificant. What is true at the microscopic level was not thought to be true at the macroscopic level. For instance, while a single atom could pass through a barrier, a tennis ball – made up of a huge amount of particles – cannot. However, the trio of researchers conducted experiments to show that quantum tunnelling can also be observed on a macroscopic scale. In 1984 and 1985, the trio developed a superconducting electrical system that could pass from one physical state to another, as if a tennis ball could move straight through a barrier and not bounce back.Anthony Leggett, who won the Nobel Prize in physics in 2003, compared the laureates’ work on how quantum mechanics functions on a larger scale to the famous thought experiment of Erwin Schrödinger, another physics laureate. To show the paradoxical nature of quantum mechanics, Schrödinger imagined a cat in a sealed box with a device that releases poison when a radioactive source decays. Because there is no way to observe whether the cat is dead or alive, Schrödinger posited that the cat was both dead and alive simultaneously – just as, in quantum mechanics, a system can exist in multiple states at once until measured.Schrödinger’s thought experiment aimed to show the absurdity of this situation, because quantum mechanics doesn’t make sense on the scale of everyday objects, such as a cat.Leggett argued, however, that the experiments conducted by Clarke, Devoret and Martinis showed that there are phenomena on larger scales that behave just as quantum mechanics predicts.Clarke said their research had helped pave the way for technological advances, such as the creation of the cell phone.“There is no advanced technology used today that does not rely on quantum mechanics, including mobile phones, cameras… and fiber optic cables,” said the Nobel committee.Last year, the prize was awarded to Geoffrey Hinton – often called the “Godfather of AI” – and John Hopfield, for their fundamental discoveries in machine learning, which paved the way for how artificial intelligence is used today. In 2023, the prize went to a trio of European scientists who used lasers to understand the rapid movement of electrons, which were previously thought impossible to follow. The prize carries a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor ($1 million).

The 2025 Nobel Prize in physics has been awarded to a trio of scientists – a Briton, a Frenchman and an American – for their ground-breaking discoveries in the field of quantum mechanics.

John Clarke, Michel Devoret and John Martinis will share the prize “for the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantization in an electric circuit,” the Nobel Committee announced Tuesday at a ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden.

The committee praised the laureates for demonstrating that the “bizarre properties of the quantum world can be made concrete in a system big enough to be held in the hand.”

Clarke, taking questions at a news conference, said he was “completely stunned” to learn he had won the award.

“We had not realized in any way that this might be the basis of a Nobel Prize,” Clarke said of their research in the 1980s at the University of California, Berkeley.

Quantum mechanics, which describes how matter and energy behaves at or below the scale of an atom, allows a particle to pass straight through a barrier, in a process called “tunnelling.”

In 1984 and 1985, the trio developed a superconducting electrical system that could pass from one physical state to another, as if a tennis ball could move straight through a barrier and not bounce back.

Anthony Leggett, who won the Nobel Prize in physics in 2003, compared the laureates’ work on how quantum mechanics functions on a larger scale to the famous thought experiment of Erwin Schrödinger, another physics laureate.

To show the paradoxical nature of quantum mechanics, Schrödinger imagined a cat in a sealed box with a device that releases poison when a radioactive source decays. Because there is no way to observe whether the cat is dead or alive, Schrödinger posited that the cat was both dead and alive simultaneously – just as, in quantum mechanics, a system can exist in multiple states at once until measured.

Schrödinger’s thought experiment aimed to show the absurdity of this situation, because quantum mechanics doesn’t make sense on the scale of everyday objects, such as a cat.

Leggett argued, however, that the experiments conducted by Clarke, Devoret and Martinis showed that there are phenomena on larger scales that behave just as quantum mechanics predicts.

Clarke said their research had helped pave the way for technological advances, such as the creation of the cell phone.

“There is no advanced technology used today that does not rely on quantum mechanics, including mobile phones, cameras… and fiber optic cables,” said the Nobel committee.

Last year, the prize was awarded to Geoffrey Hinton – often called the “Godfather of AI” – and John Hopfield, for their fundamental discoveries in machine learning, which paved the way for how artificial intelligence is used today.
