Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei has died at the age of 33 after being doused in petrol and set on fire by her boyfriend, according to multiple reports.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence,” Uganda’s athletics federation shared via X on Thursday, September 5.

“As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace,” the post concluded.

Cheptegei was taken to hospital on Sunday, September 1, following a disagreement with her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, at her home in Kenya, reported the BBC and the Associated Press.

Hollywood mourned many celebrities in 2024. Speed Racer star Christian Oliver (born Christian Klepser) died at the age of 51 during a fatal plane crash on January 5. Oliver was traveling home from a Caribbean vacation with his two daughters — Madita and Annik, whom he shared with wife Jessica Klepser — on January 4. […]

Dr. Owen Menach, acting director of the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, where Cheptegei was admitted, told local media that Cheptegei died after all her organs failed on Wednesday, September 4, per the BBC and Sky News.

Donald Rukare, the president of Uganda’s Olympic committee, wrote via X on Thursday, “We have learnt of the sad passing on of our Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei OLY following a vicious attack by her boyfriend.”

“May her gentle soul rest in peace and we strongly condemn violence against women. This was a cowardly and senseless act that has led to the loss of a great athlete. Her legacy will continue to endure,” Rukare added.

Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom previously said that Ndiema “bought a jerrican of petrol, poured it on her and set her ablaze during a disagreement” that took place on Sunday, per the AP.

“The couple were heard quarreling outside their house,” Kosiom said, according to the BBC, who referred to Ndiema as Cheptegei’s “former” boyfriend in their report. “During the altercation, the boyfriend was seen pouring a liquid on the woman before burning her.”

The AP reported that Ndiema received burns during the incident as well and both were taken to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, in Eldoret, a city in Kenya.

Cheptegei competed as a long-distance and marathon runner for Uganda in the 2024 Paris Olympics, finishing in 44th place.

The AP reported that she and Ndemia had argued over land that her house was built on. Cheptegei’s parents said the athlete bought land and moved to Trans Nzoia in order to continue her training.

After the incident, police commander Kosiom spoke with The Standard, revealing that neighbors put out the fire before rushing Cheptegei and Ndiema to the hospital. A “five-liter yellow jerrican, a bag and a black marvin” and “burnt mobile phone” were reportedly collected at the scene for “forensic analysis,” Kosiom continued.

Prior to Cheptegei’s appearance in this year’s Paris Olympics, she competed in various marathons. She ended 2022 with a fourth-place finish in the ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon, which allowed her to secure her spot at the Olympics. Cheptegei has been competing as a professional athlete since 2010, winning the Kampala 10,000 meter race in Kampala, Uganda that year.

It’s safe to say that Australian breakdancer Rachael “Raygun” Gunn has taken the internet by storm.

Gunn competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics‘ first-ever breakdancing event on August 9, facing off against France’s Sya Dembélé in the preliminary phase of the competition. Though she failed to score a point, losing 0-2 to the teenage breaking sensation, her unique dance moves quickly became the talk of the town shortly after competing.

In the leadup to the big day, Gunn – whose Olympic debut was at age 36 – told CNBC how the younger B-Girls’ style of dance would ultimately differ from those who skew a little older in age, and how it could affect each breakdancer’s overall score, which is based on originality and creativity.

“The younger competitors are great in their strength, fitness and explosiveness. But the older ones bring a different level of maturity to the dance,” she told the outlet. “My specialty is style and creativity, not dynamics or power moves like many other dancers.”

Men’s gymnastics sensation Stephen Nedoroscik has veteran Olympian Simone Biles by his side to show him the ropes — or in his case, the memes.

Nedoroscik, a bronze medalist, revealed in an interview with Teen Vogue that Simone Biles recently paid him a visit in the Olympic Village to show him a meme of himself. He described the moment with “the GOAT” as “surreal,” saying, “I don’t think she really even knew what my name was a month ago.”

The gymnast, 25, has been dubbed “Pommel Horse Guy” for his position as a specialist on Team USA. Beyond his medal-earning skills in the event, Nedoroscik has appealed to Americans everywhere with his unbothered, nerdy persona.

Nedoroscik has displayed a number of meme-worthy behaviors on camera during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, most notably his Rubik’s cube side quest.

Pole vaulter Anthony Ammirati missed out on a chance to win an Olympic medal when his crotch got caught on the crossbar.

Ammirati, 21, had his qualifying track and field heat on Saturday, August 3. As he went to clear the crossbar, Ammirati couldn’t quite make it over. His penis (through his shorts) caught on the bar and he fell to the ground instead of making it over as intended.

After four attempts on the pole vault, Ammirati finished with a combined score of 5.60 and in 12th position, meaning he did not qualify for the next round of the competition and the chance to compete for a medal. Sweden’s Armand Duplantis, Norway’s Sondre Guttormsen and Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis tied for first. Sam Kendricks, the United States’ entrant, finished in seventh. There will be a second heat before the finals.

The men’s pole vault was Ammirati’s only event at the 2024 Olympics. He previously came in second place at the 2022 Mediterranean Games and in first at that year’s  World Athletics U20 Championships.

    [ad_1]

As Team USA gets ready to head to Paris for the 2024 Olympics, food is essential to fueling their performance.

The athletes take breakfast — the meal of champions — pretty seriously, always starting their days off strong with a mix of carbs and protein.

Archer Casey Kaufhold and fencer Eli Dershwitz turn to scrambled eggs for protein, pairing the morning classic with a side like toast, oatmeal or fruit. Soccer players Emily Sonnett and Rose Lavelle opt for carbs instead, filling up on bagels and pancakes before hitting the field.

Athletes pack on the protein midday, even when on the go. Field hockey player Abigail Tamer named honey stinger waffles as one of her go-to snacks, while Dershwitz mentioned granola bars and protein smoothies. CJ Nickolas, who competes in taekwondo, told Us about his recent routine to simplify his meals.

Emily in Paris‘ Emily Cooper would be all over the 2024 Olympics, so it makes sense that NBC turned to Lily Collins to play the character in a new summer games promo.

Emily wants to see Lyles, 26, wearing gold chains and a flowing gold cape that says “I’m the one” on the back. Of course, she pictures him wearing this ensemble as he competes in the 100M final. (The bedazzled outfit was actually created by Emily in Paris costume designer Marylin Fitoussi.)

“As we kick off an Olympic year, we are delighted that Lily Collins, as Emily Cooper, will bring her fantastical marketing ideas to our Olympic campaign,” Jenny Storms, CMO of Sports and Entertainment at NBCUniversal, said in a statement. “Her stylish pitch fits perfectly with our strategy and will generate excitement for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris, one of the fashion capitals of the world.”
