RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — Students were forced to evacuate after a fire broke out inside a dorm room on the Shaw University campus.

This is the same dorm that’s been plagued by heating and water issues all winter long.

Thursday night’s fire forced freshman students who are already living with no heat into the cold as fire crews arrived.

Raleigh Fire Department responded to the fire at the Dimple Newsome Residence Hall shortly after 8 p.m.

According to the fire chief, the flames were mostly contained to one room which suffered significant damage.

He also says rooms nearby suffered minor smoke damage.

An exact cause of the fire has not been released, but the chief was able to say it was an accidental electrical issue.

The fire forced students to evacuate, many gathering at the nearby McDonald’s on South Wilmington Street.

That’s where Eyewitness News was able to talk with some of them who say they found out about the fire from a group chat with their friends.

“I just seen a text in my group chat and I’m like, What in the world? And then I just seen them say, Oh, there’s a fire. Then, there’s smoke in the building. I need to evacuate. So I made sure that all my friends and everything evacuated. I made sure that we all got out safely,” said one student.

No students or firefighters were hurt.

This is the same dorm that has been experiencing heating and hot water issues for weeks now.

Eyewitness News has reached out to Shaw University several times for comment.

So far, we have not heard back.
