  • Olivia Colman and John Lithgow star ‘Jimpa,’ new queer family drama

A new exploration of the modern family is arriving in theaters this week.

“Jimpa,” a semi-autobiographical drama from director Sophie Hyde (“Good Luck to You, Leo Grande”), stars Academy Award winner Olivia Colman and Emmy winner John Lithgow in a story spanning three generations of the queer community.

The film follows filmmaker Hannah (Colman) as she takes her trans non-binary teen, Frances, to Amsterdam to visit her gay father, Jim (Lithgow). When Frances decides to stay there for a year, Hannah is forced to confront her past and her parenting choices.

“I think it’s a sign of the times,” John Lithgow told On The Red Carpet at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. “This is not just a great film; it really is an important film for this moment.”

For director Sophie Hyde, the movie is deeply personal. The character of Frances is played by her own child, Aud Mason-Hyde, who is making their feature film debut. Hyde noted that she intentionally cast actors who could bring a high level of empathy to the roles.

“You bring in a natural like Olivia and you trust in their take,” Hyde said of Colman. “Her instincts are so amazing, you don’t want to fiddle with that too much.”

What should audiences take away from watching the film? Mason-Hyde hopes viewers watch the film and “celebrate queerness and difference.”

“Jimpa” first gained attention at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and later served as the opening night gala for the Adelaide Film Festival.

“Jimpa” opens in theaters on February 6.
