DANA POINT, Calif. (KABC) — Community members gathered on a rainy Thursday night for a special candlelight vigil to honor the life of Luis Adrian Morales-Pacheco, a 13-year-old boy who was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Dana Point.

The vigil was held at Doheny State Beach, bringing out dozens of people, including parents and many of Luis’ friends and classmates from Niguel Hills Middle School.

“He was just a good, well-rounded sweet boy,” said Jeannie Scharetg, a mom at the school and member of the school’s Parent-Teacher Association.

Many wore blue in honor of the boy’s favorite color.

“When we were all sitting down on the lunch table, and he was so happy, he told me, ‘I can’t wait for you, me and my brother to go to high school,’” recalled one of his classmates.

The crash happened Tuesday morning near Park Lantern and Dana Point Harbor Drive.

The driver – identified as Bradley Gene Funk – allegedly drove onto a curb and fatally struck Luis.

Funk, 59, has since been charged with murder and hit-and-run causing death. He’s also suspected of driving under the influence.

According to records, Funk has a criminal history, including two prior DUI arrests.

The boy’s family set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for his funeral.

“I’m just so proud of this community,” said Scharetg. “We rally around this family that really needs the love and support, just to know they are not alone through this right now, that’s why everyone is here.”
