PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — The Women’s Film Festival in Philadelphia is happening now through September 28th.
During its 10th anniversary year, the festival will screen more than 100 films.
Its motto is to uplift films that are “For, by, or about women,” and many of this year’s films are from Emmy and Oscar-nominated filmmakers who are coming to Philadelphia from all over the country.
One film, “20 Pounds to Happiness,” is a romantic comedy about a woman facing a dilemma between joining her friends in a gastric bypass surgery group or staying true to a man she lives and the curves he adores.
Another film, “Bloodroot, A Culinary Uprising” is about the oldest and longest-lasting feminist restaurant in the country.
The closing film is called “Know Her Name” and it delves into the mystery of why many women filmmakers have been largely forgotten. It also looks at how to ensure that kind of historical amnesia doesn’t continue to happen.
“It really honors the filmmakers, female filmmakers who came before us. I think a lot of people don’t realize that in the beginning, it was mostly female filmmakers, and then it wasn’t until it started making money that guys started taking over, so a lot of the original filmmakers were all women,” says Suzi Nash, the Artistic Director for The Women’s Film Festival.
The festival includes Q&A with filmmakers as well as activities, including a fashion show.
