Suspect escapes police by jumping into Potomac River

As a suspect fled from police after their car crashed blocked I-395 southbound lanes Wednesday morning. All lanes were reopened.

WASHINGTON — A suspect who was being chased by Virginia State Police for reckless driving jumped off the 14th St. Bridge into the Potomac River. 

Police were originally stopping the suspect for speeding on I-95 heading southbound, however, the suspected didn’t stop and that’s when police pursed the driver. 

The chase started exiting the interstate at Route 294 and heading through multiple roads through Prince William County before heading to Route 123 and back to Route 1 and I-95 heading northbound. 

The vehicle sideswiped another car trying to get back onto I-95. The chase then continued on I- 95 northbound and onto I-395 northbound. State troopers were able to throw out spike strips before the chase continued into D.C.

The suspect than fled from the car and jumped from the bridge. Police have not yet found the suspect.  

By 6:30 a.m., the crash scene had cleared, but some delays remained.
