WASHINGTON — A Supreme Court decision striking down President Donald Trump’s tariffs may not bring immediate relief to consumers or significantly lower prices on imported goods, according to an economic analyst.
The ruling creates uncertainty about the future of the tariffs, but it does not necessarily mean they will disappear or that prices will fall, said Ted Rossman, principal analyst at Bankrate.
“Probably the best we can hope for is slower price growth moving forward,” Rossman said. “Although I wouldn’t even necessarily count on that.”
Rossman said consumers should not assume the court’s decision will translate into lower costs at the checkout line. Retailers could keep prices steady rather than pass along savings, and new tariffs could be introduced under a different legal authority, he said.
“I would not see this news and think, ‘Oh great, prices are going to be coming down,’” Rossman said. “Between retailers keeping the difference and new tariffs being implemented, I don’t think there’ll be any kind of price relief from this.”
There is also little clarity on when businesses might see financial relief from the ruling, he said. Even if the existing tariffs are halted, similar measures could be reinstated through another rule.
“It’s more likely that these tariffs will be reimplemented just using a different rule,” Rossman said.
For consumers, Rossman advised against making hasty decisions on large purchases such as cars or appliances based solely on the court’s ruling. If a vehicle or washing machine can last a few more years, he said, it may make sense to wait rather than rush to buy new.
