Former Rep. Tom Suozzi said on Tuesday that he is running for Congress in New York’s 3rd district, which includes parts of Long Island’s North Shore and Queens. Suozzi aims to reclaim the seat currently held by George Santos, who is mired in controversy.
Suozzi, who challenged Kathy Hochul in an unsuccessful bid in the Democratic primary for governor, had served in Congress from 2017 to 2023, before stepping from politics.
Now, he said, is filing a committee to run for Congress in November 2024.
“The madness in Washington, DC, and the absurdity of George Santos remaining in the United States Congress is obvious to everyone,” Suozzi said on X, the platform that up until recently was known as Twitter, on Tuesday morning.
“I’ve never sat on the sidelines,” he added. “From the cost-of-living to immigration, crime, climate change, combatting terrorism in the Middle East and globally, and simply helping people, we need more common sense and compassion and less chaos and senseless fighting.”
The field already includes Democratic contenders, including former NY State Sen. Anna Kaplan, Nassau County Legis. Josh Lafazan and Zak Malamed, a cofounder of The Next 50, an advocacy group that aims to raise money for and recruit Democratic candidates who are under the age of 50.
Meanwhile, the controversy around Santos continues. Last week, for example, the ex-treasurer for Santos pleaded guilty to a fraud conspiracy charge and implicated the indicted New York Republican in a scheme to embellish his campaign finance reports with a fake loan and fake donors.
In April, Kellen Curry, a Republican and Afghanistan war veteran, announced he was challenging Santos for the congressional seat.
