Philadelphia school officials and students from throughout the School District of Philadelphia gathered in South Philly on Wednesday to prepare for next year’s FIFA World Cup events in the city.

During the day, students got a taste of soccer programing that will be available throughout the coming year.

In a statement, organizers said the district will offer soccer programming, professional development, new equipment, and schoolyard beautification projects at schools throughout the district as part of the celebrations for next year’s FIFA World Cup.

NBC10’s Miguel Martinez-Valle spoke to students during the day.

“It’s going to be really nice to just be able to change and go outside of the school building,” said Ruth Kuriloff, a student at the Science Leadership Academy at Beeber, which will be getting a soccer pitch, through the beautification projects planned in preparation for next year’s events.

There will also be after-school programing and sports-based youth development programs where students will learn soccer skills, teamwork, and motivation, organizers said.

Organizers said 21 schools across the city will work with district partnership groups as part of the preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
