CARY, N.C. (WTVD) — State Auditor Dave Boliek sat down with ABC11 to talk his office’s investigation into former Cary Town Manager Sean Stegall’s questionable use of taxpayer funds.
Stegall resigned last month following open records requests that revealed a pattern of reckless spending, including luxury hotel stays for official town business and using town funds to pay for an employee’s master’s degree.
Boliek, while not confirming whether the investigation might extend beyond Stegall, described its scope as “broad.”
“This will be a full look at all finances in the town of Cary,” he said.
Boliek said it was critical that the public receive a timely update about where taxpayer money was spent.
“There are responsible government agencies looking at the public spending in the town of Cary, because the citizens of Cary need to have confidence and trust in their government,” Boliek said.
Earlier this week, Boliek’s office found that Stegall’s actions could have been criminal, not just reckless as previously described by the town.
When asked if there was money in Cary still unaccounted, Boliek said, “The most accurate thing I can say is that our initial analysis certainly leads to potential criminal activity.”
This week, the SBI began its own investigation into Stegall at the recommendation of Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman. Boliek said they were using advanced technology to analyze purchasing trends and examine the nature of those purchases.
He added that having items purchased with public funds delivered to a personal residence could indicate potential fraud, as it raises concerns about the intent behind such actions.
