Two Mammoth Mountain ski patrollers were injured during avalanche mitigation work after heavy snowfall.
MAMMOTH LAKES, Calif. — Two ski patrollers were injured after being caught in an avalanche at Mammoth Mountain Friday morning.
The avalanche happened around 7:30 a.m., before ski area operations began, while Mammoth Mountain Ski Patrol was doing avalanche mitigation work on Lincoln Mountain, according to a Mammoth Mountain spokesperson.
Both patrollers were immediately taken to Mammoth Hospital. One patroller had serious injuries and is being taken out of the area for further care, while the second is being evaluated for possible broken bones, officials said.
The incident happened after Mammoth Mountain received more than five feet of snow since Dec. 23.
The ski area will be closed for the remainder of the day.
