HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. – A single-engine plane lost power and crashed Friday, according to officials.

It happened just after 12 p.m. when the pilot tried to land on Pine Island Drive but hit a palm tree, nearly severing the Cessna plane in half.

Two people on board suffered minor injuries, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

Fire and HAZMAT crews are handling a 30-gallon fuel spill in connection with the crash.

The plane was registered to an owner in Brooksville.

There was no immediate word on any road closures.

A few dozen Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative customers were without power at the same time of the crash, though it wasn’t immediately clear if the incidents were related. The outages had been restored by about 2 p.m.
