Seventh Day Adventist (vegetarian) diets & cancer – Diet and Health Today

[ad_1]

In Summary

* Loma Linda University has studied Seventh Day Adventists (SDAs) over many decades.

* A recent paper using data from the Adventists Health Study 2 (AHS-2) examined associations between vegetarian vs non-vegetarian diets and the risk of different cancers.

* There were surprisingly few findings and the findings were inconsistent and random, which made plausible mechanisms difficult to establish.

* The key issue with the paper was the definition of vegetarian, which included vegans (defined as people who consumed animal products less than once a month), lacto-ovo-vegetarians (the correct definition of vegetarians) and fish eaters (who are pescatarians, not vegetarians). It has long been the policy of Loma Linda to include pescatarians in the vegetarian category, which is incorrect. Previous Loma Linda research has shown that pescatarians alone can generate a positive result.

* Claims for the benefits of an SDA (vegetarian) diet must always be viewed in the context of the whole SDA lifestyle – Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunlight, Temperance, Air, Rest, and Trust (in God). Seventh Day Adventists do many healthy things, which can impact longevity. Claims for vegetarianism, in isolation, cannot be made – not least when the term hasn’t been properly defined.
