SamTrans braces for work stoppage after union rejects contract

(BCN) — Bus service in San Mateo County may be disrupted by a work stoppage Monday and Tuesday after the union representing workers rejected a contract proposal, SamTrans said Friday.

Members of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1574 rejected a three-year contract proposal, “potentially resulting in a work stoppage that could lead to service disruptions for SamTrans customers as early as next week,” the transit system said in a press release.

The union, which represents almost 400 bus operators and other workers, turned down the district’s offer after Aug. 14. It rejected the first proposal on July 5, SamTrans said.

“We are deeply disappointed that members of ATU Local 1574 are considering taking this severe action,” said April Chan, SamTrans chief executive officer and general manager. “Our contract offer was fair, competitive and equitable for union members. We put this proposal forth in good faith and it was endorsed by the union leadership team.”

SamTrans said customers should seek alternative transportation options on Monday and possibly Tuesday. The agency said it will prioritize school service.

The contract rejected by union members on Aug. 14 called for a wage increase of 4% this fiscal year, followed by 3.5% increases the following two fiscal years, plus targeted equity adjustments for operators and maintenance, the agency said.
