RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — It’s that time of year when temperatures can get dangerously cold and that means it’s time to prepare your home for cold weather.
People across the Triangle shared how they’re preparing this winter.
“Just make sure I have plenty of wood at the house if the power goes out,” Scott Mizerak said.
Mizerak was at Burke Brothers Hardware in Raleigh, where manager Tommy Hastings said ice melt, faucet covers and insulation to keep the cold air out are some of the top items.
“The first thing I always recommend to people is pick up some faucet covers,” Hastings said.
Doing the work now to protect your pipes from freezing is one of the ways you can prepare.
Other safety tips include checking on your neighbors and bringing pets inside.
UNC Health’s Dr. Ryan Lamb also said to be aware and dress appropriately.
“Being out of the wind, staying dry, putting plenty of layers on, having plans if you’re going to be outside,” Dr. Lamb said.
Protecting yourself from the wind is important to avoid frostbite and hypothermia, according to Dr. Lamb.
“The temperatures that we’re seeing, you can start to get frostbite and that can happen pretty quickly,” Dr. Lamb said.
The Triangle could feel the coldest air of the season Sunday night.
