(FOX40.COM) — Staff with the Yolo County Public Works has issued a safety advisory for South River Road due to shoulder erosion that prevents drivers from being able to pull off the paved roadway that runs along the top of the Sacramento River levee.

Officials said that field inspections confirmed public reports of the erosions, which are affecting stretches from the West Sacramento city limit to the north, down to the Freeport Bridge to the south.

Immediate safety measures are being implemented that include changeable message signs along the corridor that alert motorists to the “NO SHOULDER” conditions.

Public Works staff will also add signs that ask motorists to drive 35 mph through the affected areas. The addition of permanent sign adjustments is being evaluated, officials said.

According to staff, state and federal agencies would have to approve certain improvements.

“Constructing wider shoulders in these areas would require approvals from the State of California, as South River Road is on top of a levee maintained by the State and under the federal jurisdiction of the Army Corps of Engineers,” officials said. “While Yolo County is permitted to perform routine maintenance on top of the levee roadway from West Sacramento to the Sacramento County line at Sutter Slough, any proposed modifications or improvements to the levee structure would require approval by the State and federal agencies.”

Public works staff advise drivers to travel through the South River Road corridor with caution.

Those looking to report maintenance concerns are asked to do so online.
