Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black tops Netflix in the U.S., showcasing Sacramento State grad Xavier Smalls as Angel.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black is now the top viewed show in the U.S. on Netflix, and we’re talking to Sacramento’s own Xavier Smalls who plays Angel in the show.
“It’s very cool. I’m very excited that I get to be a Sactown representative,” said Smalls.
Xavier graduated from Sacramento State with his bachelor’s degree in theater in 2020, and five years later, he’s appearing on the Number 1 show in the U.S. on Netflix on the second season of Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black.
“I’m going to be rubbing my eyes at 1 a.m. trying to watch as much as I can,” said Smalls with a smile as he explained he’s watching for the first time with everyone at home.
Xavier admits he had to pray about saying yes to the role of Angel.
“Obviously I love acting and the opportunity to work with one of the greatest of all time, Tyler Perry, and such an incredible human being I would typically jump at that opportunity but I just wanted to make sure I was doing what God wanted me to do versus what Xavier wanted to do. I think the idea of nudity or the sexy scenes that’s uncomfortable for a lot of people including me. So I wanted to make sure that was something I was comfortable doing prior to just saying yes.”
So what can we look forward to in this new season of Beauty in Black?
“I can say this. You can look forward to a different side of Angel. I’ll just say…in typical Angel fashion I don’t make the best of decisions.”
