Sacramento State enhances security measures ahead of next football game and concert

(FOX40.com) – Officials at Sacramento State University are increasing security and staffing ahead of Friday night’s football game against the Montana Grizzlies. This week the university also adjusted its crowd management strategy.

The changes came nearly a week after the homecoming post-game concert with rapper Lil Yachty was cut short due to behavior from the community that did not meet the university’s policies.

University President Dr. Luke Wood said there were over 20,000 fans in attendance last Saturday, a mix of students and community members. Students told FOX40 several fights broke out before the game ended and that people even jumped over the stands as soon as they saw the stage fully set up.

In response to last weekend’s conduct, the university released a statement about the changes being implemented and potential consequences for anyone who violates the policy. It reads:

“The safety of our students, staff, faculty, and guests will always be our top priority. We want to continue to offer entertaining campus experiences, but we can only do so with everyone’s cooperation.

The following measures have been implemented to address Hornet Stadium safety concerns.

First, we have strengthened our crowd management strategy. We have also increased staffing and security personnel and implemented additional crowd control measures that will reduce the confusion about standards and protocols.

For this Friday’s event, all guests who wish to enjoy the post-game concert will be required to remain in the stands. Community members attempting to jump the railing at Hornet Stadium or otherwise access the track, field, or any area beyond the barricades will be banned from Hornet Stadium and may face penalties including arrest.

For students, these actions will also be considered violations of the Student Code of Conduct, and they will result in disciplinary consequences.

We take safety with the utmost seriousness and will continue to prioritize a secure environment where everyone can enjoy our football games and post-game performances.

By respecting ourselves, one another, and the experience we’re building, our Hornet community will have a safe, fantastic time this Friday night.”

The Sacramento State Hornets will take on the Montana Grizzlies on Friday at 7:30 p.m., with singer and rapper Quavo set to take the stage afterward for a post-game concert.
