The Sacramento City Unified School District asks families for input on if the school year’s starting and end dates should shift slightly earlier.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento City Unified School District is asking families for input on whether the school year’s starting and end dates should shift slightly earlier.
Proposed changes would shift the school year’s start to mid-August and end to late May, and this new academic calendar would begin in 2026-2027, the district said.
The survey is available HERE.
The district said some benefits of the change could include:
- Finals before winter break, which would reduce learning loss and allow for more relaxation during time off
- Equal opportunity and learning time to prepare for AP and IB testing
- No school year overlap for students enrolled in summer classes at community colleges
- Earlier access to available summer jobs and internship programs
- Better alignment with the CIF calendar for fall athletes to help them better prepare
For those without digital access, or with questions, families can attend community meetings to present their feedback.
The community meetings are:
- 6-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14 at C. K. McClatchy Library
- 6-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14 at Rosemont Auditorium
- 6-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15 at John F. Kennedy Auditorium
- 6-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21 at Luther Burbank Cafeteria
- 6-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21 at Hiram Johnson Auditorium
