NEW YORK — FX’s latest series from Ryan Murphy takes viewers inside a love story that captivated the world, unfolding on the streets of New York City and dominating headlines nationwide. “Love Story” follows the romance, and eventual tragedy, between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette.
Their whirlwind romance captivated a nation, a match made in New York City.
John F. Kennedy Jr. was often described as American royalty, and Carolyn Bessette, a rising star at Calvin Klein. They were a pairing that fascinated the public from the moment they appeared together.
Now, Ryan Murphy is revisiting both the beautiful beginning and heartbreaking end of their story, with Sarah Pidgeon and newcomer Paul Anthony Kelly stepping into the legendary roles.
“Is this your first screen role?” Garguilo asked Kelly.
“Yeah,” he said.
“Are you kidding me?” Garguilo said.
“No,” Kelly answered, as Garguilo noted the “absolutely stunning” resemblance.
“So specific, so detailoriented,” Pidgeon said of the production. “No stone is left unturned. I just loved getting to know so much about this woman, who I now admire so greatly.”
Executive producer Brad Simpson said authenticity was essential. “Everything, from our production designer doing deep work to recreate the feeling of New York in the nineties, to dealing with one of the most welldocumented couples. When it came to filming something like their famous fight, our director had to match every frame and make it feel real.”
The cast also includes Eric Bergen as Anthony Radziwill, Alessandro Nivola as Calvin Klein, and Grace Gummer as Caroline Kennedy, alongside Naomi Watts, who transformed into Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
“What an iconic character,” Garguilo said to Watts.
“I wanted to make sure that I treated it with respect,” Watts replied. “That pressure, you know, constantly present, and be performative.”
“It doesn’t matter how much we know,” Garguilo said. “We want to see it in whatever form possible.”
“It’s what everybody wants to see, the romance at the heart of it,” Gummer said. “The romance between the two of them, but also the romance of the backdrop of New York City, of that time, of that era. Who they were as human beings instead of how they just presented themselves.”
Asked about what she learned while researching Carolyn Bessette, Pidgeon said, “It feels like this contradiction, someone whose clothing is so straight and classic and simple, but who had this energetic, childlike side.”
“What do you love about their love story?” Garguilo asked.
“I think they really saw each other, a sort of soul connection,” Pidgeon said.
“I want everyone to know that this is a love letter to the family, to New York City, to the nineties,” Gummer said.
“Just the passion we put into it and the care,” Kelly said.
The first three episodes of “Love Story” premiere Thursday at 9 p.m. ET on FX. It is also streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
