The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office is applauding the efforts of rescue crews who pulled a Rottweiler from icy water.
SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. — A Rottweiler and Labrador retriever are recovering after they were rescued from a frozen lake in Spotsylvania County Wednesday morning.
Crews responded to the scene in the 5400 block of Ridge Road for a dog in distress.
Investigators believe the Rottweiler — named Church — and an unnamed lab they described as his buddy, wandered onto the lake while it was frozen over.
Once the ice began to give way, the pair were stranded.
According to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, accessing the lake was challenging in the wake of Sunday’s snow and ice storm.
Rescue crews were able to use their four-by-four vehicles to traverse the icy terrain and reach the scene.
Crews were able to pull Church out of the frigid water and take him to a nearby hospital for observation.
The lab was found running through a nearby yard.
They say both dogs are “doing well and are in good health with no issues after the ordeal” after the ordeal.
The sheriff’s office stressed the teamwork involved in the rescue operation.
“We are incredibly proud of everyone involved, with a special shout-out to Lt. Col. Myrick and Firefighters Brian S. Smith and Kevin Callan for their respective expertise during the rescue,” officials said.
