A range of specialist police on land, water and in the sky will be on hand for the evening, including the Public Order Response Team, Mounted Branch and Dog Squad, the Air Wing and Water Police Squad.
The theme for the New Year’s Eve celebrations is sequins and glitter, and the City of Melbourne will be giving away 100,000 recyclable sparkly hats to help revellers celebrate the “All that sparkles” theme.
But plenty of people will choose to avoid the city crowds.
Friends Bec Jones, 29, and Rita Alsabti, 30, will enjoy the show from home in East Melbourne at a small get-together with friends.
“We’re ready,” Jones said.
For Mitch Lederman – who travelled from Perth to catch up with family and long-time mate Alan Spencer – the end of 2023 can’t come soon enough.
“I’m looking forward to 2024,” Lederman, 32, said. “This year was OK – wasn’t great. It can always be better, right?”
Melbourne City Council said fencing would be erected where crowd control was most needed. Across the city, several streets will be blocked off, including parts of major thoroughfares Swanston Street, Flinders Street and Birdwood Avenue.
