A RED Cross aid depot was destroyed by a Russian cruise missile in a blitz condemned as a war crime.

A lone night watchman was killed as thousands of tonnes of food and water supplies were engulfed by a day-long inferno in southern Ukraine.

The Red Cross halted food handouts and said a hospital was also hit elsewhere

The fiercely neutral charity refused to say who fired the missiles but it issued a furious statement about attacks on its sites and its staff.

In a thinly veiled message to Russia’s leader Vladimir Putin, it said: “The population, humanitarian organisations, hospitals are not targets.

“Attacks on employees and institutions of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement are a gross violation of international humanitarian law and are classified as a WAR CRIME.”

The strikes came as Putin prepared for Moscow’s annual Victory Day parade in Red Square today to commemorate beating Hitler in 1945.

At the three-storey aid centre in Odesa, The Sun watched grim-faced rescuers haul a man’s remains from the ashes as firefighters battled the blaze.

Inside the wrecked building, mountains of tinned food, sacks of beans and crates of drinking water had been burnt.

The charity said: “The fire completely destroyed the humanitarian aid that was in the warehouse.”

Ukraine said Russia unleashed in total at least 60 suicide drones — machines packed with explosives and designed to crash into targets — during fresh assaults.

Sixteen rockets and missiles, including eight X-22s from long-range bombers, were also launched by Putin’s forces

In Kyiv, the capital’s air defence batteries downed 35 of the one-way drones in a spectacular two fingers to Putin.

But in the southern port of Mikolaiv, a missile blast ripped through a mobile hospital.

The Red Cross said its staff were still assessing the damage but some equipment was unusable.

Governor Vitaliy Kim said at least five cruise missiles had pounded his city.

It came as the EU proposed fresh sanctions on Chinese and other businesses helping Putin’s war machine against Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky’s forces.

Companies in China, Hong Kong, Iran and the UAE are suspected of acting as middle-men to help Moscow buy hi-tech parts for missiles and bombs.
