Readers sound off on Hamas support, Palestinian autonomy and Powerball

Violence like this doesn’t happen in a vacuum

San Francisco: It is easy to call the bloodthirsty, diabolical, murderous, premeditated and unexpected invasion of Israel by air, sea and land inhuman. Yes, it is hard for the mind to grasp how human beings can ravage people, killing children and the elderly, taking hostage or killing whole families, capturing and taking the elderly from the warmth of their homes, randomly murdering people in their cars or on their bicycles.

But it is human — it is far too human. It is as human as the 11 Israeli athletes and coaches who were kidnapped and murdered at the Munich Olympics. It is as human as Jews being forced to dig their own graves and then being shot and pushed into them during the Nazi Holocaust. It is as human as the atrocities being committed upon Ukraine, the perpetrator being Russian President Vladimir Putin, a man whose ruthlessness and hate is on the level of Adolph Hitler. I have no doubt that the inspiration for this barbarism is Putin. And I would think that this attack on Israel does not take place without prior knowledge and approval of Putin, an ardent supporter of Iran, which is the funding source for Hamas and ancillary organizations.

This bloodthirsty madness of Hamas is not about the Palestinian problem. It is about fundraising, and this act was the ultimate fundraising opportunity. The Hamas charter is to destroy Israel. “Never again” is what Jews said with the creation of Israel. And today they will say it again, as they face survival. Bruce Farrell Rosen

United dictatorships

Manhattan: It’s worth noting that Russia had a role in the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust. It is well-documented that Russia provided cyberwarfare expertise to Iran in exchange for drones. Russia is no friend of Israel’s. It’s clear how Russia would benefit from this conflict — by redirecting American weapons, supplies and attention away from Ukraine. George W. Bush’s war on terror was a bumbling disaster but there is indeed an axis of evil — Russia, Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah. This is an axis that Americans must stand against. Daniel Dolgicer

Sleeping sentries

Ozone Park: Who was watching Hamas? Israel must have hired the fired Pennsylvania jail guard who was supposed to be watching the inmate who scaled the wall using his hands and feet. Ray Hackinson

Weakened state

Greenburgh, N.Y.: When members of the House of Representatives vote to elect a new speaker, they should reflect on what is happening in Israel. Its government was distracted with political infighting and chaos. The ayatollahs in Iran and Hamas took notice and were able to take advantage of the situation. Israel was asleep at the wheel. Their security operations were not performing at the level one had expected and a tragedy took place. We have a dysfunctional House of Representatives. Our democracy is being challenged. Don’t you think that the ayatollahs, the Chinese government and Putin are smiling? If we don’t get our act together, what happened in Israel could happen to us. Democrats and Republicans should form a unity government, compromise on legislation, appoint Democrats and Republicans to committee chairs and get the government running again. Paul Feiner

Unimaginable

Bronx: My heart and prayers go out to those in Israel affected by the horrifying incursion by Hamas. Why is causing death and destruction the only answer to problems? Men, women, children and the elderly are not only subjected to the violence of shootings and bombings going on around them but were taken as hostages. I can not imagine how frightening it must be to be taken against your will by terrorists, unsure of what they are going to do to you. My employers are visiting in Israel and I hope and pray they stay safe and make it back to the U.S. unharmed. I also pray and hope for eternal peace for all parties involved. Arlana Solomon Girven Walker

Make the state

Yonkers: How many more wars is it going to take until this madness ends? One side starts it, the other ends it. Every time, there are losses on both sides and they build again, and destroy again. What I think is it is time to have the UN vote on an independent state of Palestine and have the U.S. vote for it like it did in 1947. No more blocking Palestinian self-determination. Let’s stop talking about who is right or wrong. Just give people a voice. We have a voice, let others have one too. Joe Gomes

Uneven understanding

Manhattan: It is disingenuous to refer to the Hamas attack on southern Israel as unprovoked.  Since the new Israeli government took power, attacks against Palestinians escalated to a previously unseen level. The attacks on the Al Aqsa mosque by the IDF during Ramadan were an outrage to any who believe in religious freedom. Excursions into Lebanon, a sovereign country, to “eliminate” terrorists is an outrage. And yet, when the people who have experienced continual brutality rise up, elected representatives and mainstream media condemn it as terrorism. Too many people have died in this conflict. That is unacceptable. It is also unacceptable to blame those who have died the most for trying to throw off their oppressors. Lee Levin

Life vests

Richmond Hill: I wonder how the Israelis would feel if their government said it would be illegal for them to own body armor. Robert Clolery

Bad takes

Brooklyn: The NFL season isn’t even half over and the Daily News’ self-proclaimed experts of the Bettors Guide are already struggling to pick half of the games right. That column is a lost cause, year in and year out. I also notice that all the experts are men. How about we see some diversity? I bet a woman could do better. Joe Ferra

Proper compensation

Manhattan: Hey, New York Giants, pay Saquon Barkley what he wants. It’s not like it’s coming out of your pockets. Fans will pay his salary when their ticket prices go up (as they do anyway). The Giants offense is terrible. Their starting receivers wouldn’t even start for any other team. I don’t even know who our tight end is. You gave Dave Brown and Daniel Jones top quarterback money. Now give the only real pro on the Giants offense the money he would have gotten anyway as the franchise player. Edward Drossman

No way to go

Middle Village: The main purpose for congestion pricing is to discourage people from driving their cars into Manhattan and take public transportation instead. But what about people with disabilities who have an NYC disabilities parking permit? In order to qualify, you need both your doctor to examine you and to certify you have “a disability that severely impairs your ability to walk and requires the use of a private automobile for transportation.” If we are unable to take trains and buses into the city and our only way to get there is to drive, then it is punitive to punish us with these high tolls for driving into Manhattan. Our driving into Manhattan is not by choice, it is by necessity. Lee Rottenberg

Racket rules

Oceanside, L.I.: How many people agree that the current structure of the lottery payouts is out of whack? Take the current billion-dollar payout. Get powerplay alone: $4; PB +1 = $4; NPB plus two = $0; PB plus two = $7; NPB plus three = $7; PB plus three = $100, NPB plus four = $100; PB plus four = $50,000; NPB plus five = $1,000,000; PB plus five = jackpot. I think the New York State Gaming Commission can reallocate the prizes in all of the lotteries to be a little more friendly to the lower hits. I, for one, would play more often if I thought I had at least a chance at getting something. You need a power ball, which is one out of about 50 or so or five matching numbers, which is tough, so maybe a mathematician can come up with a way to increase the lower denominations’ payout without upsetting the lottery officials too much.
