Publix Super Markets has secured plans for its uptown Charlotte store with a $4.8 million property purchase six years after first detailing plans for a grocery store there.
The Lakeland, Florida grocery chain operating as Publix North Carolina purchased 601 N. Tryon St. from 10th and Tryon Partners of Virginia Beach, Virginia, on Jan. 29, according to Mecklenburg County property records filed Thursday .
Property records also show that Publix and 10th and Tryon Partners terminated the lease agreement that same day. Publix had leased the property since Dec. 12, 2019, the record shows.
The company confirmed the sale, in a statement to The Charlotte Observer, but said it had nothing else to say about it.
Charlotte Business Journal reported about the property sale earlier Thursday.
Publix plans for uptown Charlotte
Publix has long had plans for a 28,000-square-foot store at the 10 Tryon building on the northwest corner of Tryon and Ninth streets. This project adds a third grocery store to the uptown neighborhood.
The stalled plan included 175,000 square feet of office space, housed in a 15-floor tower, The Charlotte Observer reported in 2021.
Publix expanding in Charlotte
Publix has been rapidly expanding in the Charlotte region since opening its first North Carolina store in Ballantyne in 2014.
Last year, Publix opened three stores and its 26th store in the Charlotte market at Arboretum, following store openings in east Charlotte and Carmel Commons Boulevard.
Publix has at least three more stores planned in the Charlotte region:
A 50,325-square-foot grocery store in Wesley Chapel will open on the southeast corner of Weddington and Waxhaw Indian Trail roads in Union County.
A 68,000-square-foot store at the corner of Sharon and Colony roads in SouthPark.
50,000-square-foot store in Matthews will anchor the 82-acre Cadia Matthews mixed-use development at Stallings and Idlewild roads. The Matthews store is expected open in late 2027.
