Princess Grace’s Cartier Engagement Ring

Today marks the 70th Anniversary of the Engagement of Prince Rainier III of Monaco and Grace Kelly, who announced their engagement on this day in 1956, 70 years ago! Grace Kelly received this magnificent Cartier Diamond Engagement Ring after the engagement, which she notably wore to film ‘High Society’ before becoming a Princess.

Prince Rainier initially proposed at Christmas in 1955 with a different ring: a modest Cartier eternity band set with rubies and diamonds, symbolizing the colours of the Monaco flag.

However, Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly were spotted looking at jewels at Cartier in Paris and acquired this spectacular Diamond Ring featuring a massive 10.48-carat emerald-cut diamond flanked by two large, tapered baguette-cut diamonds set in platinum.

Just a few weeks after the engagement announcement, Grace Kelly began filming her final film ‘High Society’ and wore the Cartier Ring in the film instead of a prop.

Princess Grace wore the Cartier Diamond Engagement Ring for the rest of her life, with the large diamond prominently visible for the most public and private occasions.

After her death in 1982, the Cartier Engagement Ring passed into the ‘Palais Princier Collection’, and has been displayed along with some of her other jewels, most recently at the landmark Cartier Exhabition at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London last year.
