Today marks the 30th Anniversary of the Death of Princess Chichibu of Japan, who passed away on this day in 1995! The British-born Japanese aristocrat who married a Prince, became a popular and widely regarded royal diplomat and the beloved aunt of Emperor Akihito, Princess Chichibu’s most spectacular jewel was her Diamond Honeysuckle Tiara!
Made by Mikimoto around 1928, the Diamond Tiara features Diamond Honeysuckles and was created for Setsuko Matsudaira when she married Yasuhito, Prince Chichibu, the second son of Emperor Taishō and Empress Teimei and a younger brother of Emperor Hirohito. The Parure also included a mirrored Diamond Necklace.
The Diamond Honeysuckle Tiara was worn by the newlywed Princess Chichibu for the first time on her Wedding Day in 1928, for some of the ceremonies at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo after those traditional ceremonies in the Imperial Shrine.
A few months later, Princess Chichibu wore the Diamond Honeysuckle Tiara for the Banquet after the Enthronement of Emperor Hirohito in 1928.
A decade later, Princess Chichibu wore the Diamond Honeysuckle Tiara for the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth at Westminster Abbey in 1937, where the Prince and Princess represented Japan. The Belle Epoque Diamond Stomacher usually worn with the Tiara and Necklace was likely an heirloom from her own family, likely acquired when her parents resided in the United Kingdom, where the Princess was born.
While she also had a Pearl Tiara, Princess Chichibu more frequently wore the Diamond Honeysuckle Tiara on numerous occasions including Princess Alexandra’s visit to Japan in 1961, a German State Visit, the Thai State Visit to Japan in 1963, the Belgian State Visit to Japan in 1964, and the Afghanistan State Visit to Japan in 1969 among many others.
The Diamond Honeysuckle Tiara was also worn by Princess Chichibu for the British State Visit to Japan in 1975, as well as the Spanish State Visit to Japan in 1980 and the Danish State Visit to Japan in 1981, as well as for the Enthronement of Emperor Akihito in 1990 among events into the latter years of her late.
After Princess Chichibu’s death in 1995, her jewellery returned to the Imperial Household Agency, but has, quite unusually reappeared, with the Diamond Honeysuckle Tiara being worn by Empress Michiko two years later for a German State Visit and then on the Japanese State Visit to Norway in 2005.
Empress Michiko also wore the Diamond Honeysuckle Tiara for King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s Diamond Jubilee Banquet and Reception in 2006 as well as for a Banquet at Uppsala Castle in 2007.
The Diamond Honeysuckle Tiara was also worn by Empress Michiko for some of the annual New Year’s Courts at the Imperial Palace as well as the Spanish State Visit to Japan in 2008, before she stopped wearing Tiaras around 2012. Princess Chichibu’s Diamond Honeysuckle Tiara has not been seen since but lets hope it reappears soon!
