Next month Prince William will travel to Singapore to attend the third annual Earthshot Prize Awards, and his four-day trip will take him to the world’s tallest indoor waterfall and largest glass greenhouse. In addition to events where William will spotlight the prize’s finalists and their innovation projects aimed at solving climate change, he will also host a summit based around the work of United For Wildlife, the conservation organization that he helped found in 2014.
The Earthshot Prize ceremony will take place on Tuesday, November 7 at the Theatre at Mediacorp, and will be aired on the BBC, PBS, and Mediacorp and streamed on YouTube on Sunday, November 12. For the first time, the award’s finalists will all attend the ceremony, along with a slate of not-yet-announced musical performers and celebrities. The next day, William will also host Earthshot+, a daylong event of speeches and panel discussions about climate, and according to Kensington Palace, board members Jacinda Ardern and Christiana Figueres will both take part in events.
Following last year’s United for Wildlife Summit at London’s Science Museum, the prince will host this year’s gathering at the Flower Dome, the world’s largest greenhouse, located in horticultural attraction Gardens By the Bay. The summit will feature global leaders from conservation, law enforcement, and government to share ideas about combating the illegal wildlife trade around the world. In 2021, United for Wildlife founded a Southeast Asia chapter, and during the event, William will learn more about the organization’s recent efforts to address wildlife crime in the region. The following day, he will also tour the Centre for Wildlife Forensics in the Lim Chu Kang area of the city-state, and the palace notes that he will “learn about the cutting edge approaches taken by researchers to identify and catalogue samples to understand poaching and trafficking trends.”
Though his schedule is packed with events focusing on climate change and conservation, the prince will also have a few opportunities to have some fun. Upon his arrival in the city-state on November 5, William will visit the Jewel Changi Airport, a mall and entertainment pavilion attached to the transportation hub. While there, he will visit the HSCB Rain Vortex, a 130-foot tall fountain that recirculates rain water, which became the world’s tallest indoor waterfall when it opened in 2019. Then the prince will take part in a walkabout with local residents at the Shiseido Forest Valley, an indoor garden.
The finalists for this year’s award were announced during William’s trip to New York City in September. “I know our generation can take the bold action we need to make changes towards a healthy and sustainable world,” he said in a speech announcing the five finalists in five different categories. “The challenge may feel huge, but as John F. Kennedy taught us, we rise to the challenge not because it is easy, but because it is hard. And vital.”
