Premier League Team of the Week
It’s been another fantastic week of action in the Premier League and it was a big few days for Arsenal in their quest to win the title as they beat Newcastle 2-1 and Liverpool fell to a 2-1 defeat at Crystal Palace.
The gap at the top is now just two points, while the likes of the Eagles, Sunderland and Bournemouth continue to outperform their pre-season expectations.
Here is our team of the week for Gameweek 6.
Goalkeeper – Robin Roefs (Sunderland)
Sunderland’s main objective this season is to avoid relegation and the Black Cats have given themselves every chance of being competitive after a stunning start to the season.
Regis Le Bris has guided his team to three wins and two draws in six matches and goalkeeper Robin Roefs put in another fine display in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest.
He made six saves to help Sunderland keep a clean sheet and everything is going to plan so far for the Black Cats.
Defender – Omar Alderete (Sunderland)
Sticking with the Black Cats and defender Omar Alderete produced a marvellous display to help his side over the line.
He scored one goal and made 11 defensive contributions to get his team into a commanding position.
The Paraguayan has adjusted well to the English top-flight and looks set for a big season.
Defender – Gabriel (Arsenal)
The man of the moment for Arsenal this weekend was centre-back Gabriel. The Brazilian made a whopping 17 defensive contributions to keep Newcastle at bay, while he also scored the winning goal in the dying minutes.
Gabriel’s winner could go a long way to Arsenal competing for the title this season and the dramatic scenes may be looked back on in a few months.
Defender – Matheus Nunes (Manchester City)
Former Wolves ace Matheus Nunes has been converted into a right-back by Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola, but he still has that attacking flair, as he showcased against Burnley in the 5-1 win at the Etihad Stadium.
Nunes scored a goal and grabbed an assist as the Citizens picked up an important win against the Clarets.
Defender – Santiago Bueno (Wolves)
Vitor Pereira’s Wolves were seconds away from winning their first Premier League game of the season on Saturday night, only for Joao Palhinha’s late goal to ruin their hopes, but Wolves defender Santiago Bueno was immense for the Old Gold.
He scored and also grabbed 15 defensive contributions in a fine display and continues to impress at the heart of defence.
Midfielder – Sean Longstaff (Leeds United)
Sean Longstaff is starting to make a real case of a regular starting spot in Leeds United’s midfield and his display against Bournemouth only adds to those claims.
Longstaff grabbed an assist for Leeds’ first goal and then scored a stunning effort of his own, which cannoned in off the post.
Sadly for the Whites they failed to hang on for the win, but Longstaff’s contribution was huge in their 2-2 draw at Elland Road.
Midfielder – Emiliano Buendia (Aston Villa)
Aston Villa finally ended their wait for a league win this season as they beat Fulham 3-1 on Sunday. That eased the pressure on Unai Emery and midfielder Emiliano Buendia certainly did his part to help.
He was only on the pitch for 45 minutes, but his contribution was telling as he scored and secured an assist.
Midfielder – Ismaila Sarr (Crystal Palace)
Crystal Palace midfielder Ismaila Sarr returned to action in a timely fashion on Saturday as he bounced back from injury to score in his team’s 2-1 success over Liverpool.
Sarr played 74 minutes in his team’s victory and his contribution was massive as Oliver Glasner’s team moved into third in the table.
Striker – Erling Haaland (Manchester City)
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland was the overwhelming favourite to score anytime this weekend in the clash with Burnley.
He took his time, but he eventually grabbed a brace, scoring in the 90th and 93rd minutes. Haaland now has eight goals in six matches and he has a four-goal cushion in the race for the Golden Boot.
Striker – Igor Thiago (Brentford)
Brentford striker Igor Thiago led the line brilliantly on Saturday in the lunchtime kick-off victory over Manchester United.
Keith Andrews’ side ran out 3-1 winners on home soil, with Brazilian Thiago scored two goals in a majestic display.
Striker – Danny Welbeck (Brighton)
The third striker on our shortlist also grabbed a brace as Danny Welbeck came up with the goods in a superb substitute appearance.
The veteran frontman scored two goals in just 23 minutes to help Brighton beat Chelsea 3-1 at Stamford Bridge.
