PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Two Portland police officers and a suspect were taken to the hospital after a fight Saturday morning when the suspect tried to grab an officer’s gun from his holster, authorities said.

The incident unfolded around Oregon Park on NE 30th Avenue around 10:30 a.m. when the officers spotted a man who was believed to have been hitting passing cars with a metal pole earlier in the morning near Northeast 33rd over I-84.

When officers spotted the man, officials said, “the suspect began fighting with the two officers.” Backup was called and alerted the suspect — whose name has not been released — was trying to get the holstered gun from an officer.

The fight lasted nearly 7 minutes, officials said, and during the fight “an officer put the suspect in some kind of neck hold.” The suspect remained conscious and alert, but was taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation. He remains in custody at the hospital.

No weapon was fired, but both officers involved were injured — one with a head injury, the other an injured hand.

Because of the level of force used, an investigation was launched in accordance with PPB policy. The names of the officers involved have not yet been released, and the officer who used the neck hold was placed on administrative leave during the investigation.

This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact PPB regarding case number 25-266458.
