After concerns of population decline, DC’s population is bouncing back.

WASHINGTON — Population decline had many people from citizens to the current administration talking but DC is seeing positive signs of growth since the pandemic.

According to DC’s Office of Revenue Analysis says in 2020 that the District losses 38,997 residents which is 5.5% of the population. However, between 2021 to 2024 the city regained 32,994 residents which accounts for 4.93% but the population still remains 6,003 residents below the 2019 level. In 2019, the population at its highest was 708,253 and as of 2024 the population sits at 702,250.

Millennials (those between the ages of 28 and 43) are the primary driver of the population change. Between 2020 and 2021, 48% of the net population loss was millennials, but they were also the primary gain from 2022 to 2024. Millennials in their late 20s accounted for 78% of D.C.’s population loss between 2020 and 2021 and as of 2024, the younger half of millennials sit at just 38.6%. But millennials between 30 to 44 drove the population growth between 2022 to 2024.

Even though the younger half of the generation seems to be decreasing in the District, millennials still make up 38.8% of the District’s population.
