Musician Lizzo sings that “all the rumors are true,” but it’s clear she wasn’t talking about this one.
“34 dead after Lizzo attempted to crowd surf,” an April 6 Instagram post read.
It was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)
This didn’t happen. Or, as Lizzo might say, “Y’all be running with fake news.” We found no reports, photos or videos that show this happened.
Similar hoaxes have been circulating since at least 2019. Lizzo herself addressed one on July 27, 2021, on her own TikTok account.
“So, I’ve seen a lot of annoying things about me on the internet, but the thing that bothers me the most is this rumor that I stage-dived at a concert and killed somebody,” she said. “Like, that rumor is a lie first of all, I’ve never stage-dived in my life.”
Lizzo’s Grammy-winning work celebrates self-love and body positivity and she speaks often about giving media representation to plus-sized people who are often ignored in popular media imagery.
