Police shoot, kill knife-wielding man in Northwest DC neighborhood

The shooting was reported around 12:30 p.m. on Sherier Place Northwest.

WASHINGTON — Authorities are investigating after a shooting involving an officer in Northwest D.C. Tuesday afternoon.

Police were first called to the 5100 block of Sherier Place Northwest just before 12:30 p.m. for the report of a shooting. That’s not far from Palisades Recreation Center and Playground.

According to Metropolitan Police Department Assistant Chief Andre Wright the incident began around 11 a.m. when officers were called to a domestic disturbance. Responding officers learned that a man made threats to damage vehicles in the neighborhood. Before police arrived, the man left the scene.

Wright said the suspect came back a short time later while police were interviewing the victims. According to police, the man, who has not been identified, was armed with two knives.

The man ran toward the officers while armed the the knives. Two officers made multiple commands for the man to drop the knives and he refused. Officers deployed their Tasers twice, and the man continued to ignore commands from officers.

That’s when Wright said both officers fired their weapons at the man. Wright said the man was struck once. Despite life-saving efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both knives were recovered at the scene.

Police have not identified the officers involved or the man shot. Wright said the victim and the suspect were related.

Police are asking the public to avoid the area during the shooting investigation.

It is not yet clear whether body worn camera footage of the incident will be released. Wright said the investigation is still in its initial stages.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Additional details have not been made public. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call DC Police at 202-727-9099 or text the department’s tip line at 50411.
