Police officials said Saturday they were investigating if a driver was targeting a 16-year-old girl when he hit and killed her with his SUV.

The collision happened just after 4 a.m. Saturday at Roosevelt Avenue and Benham Street in Elmhurst, according to the NYPD.

Police officials said when officers arrived they were told that a 38-year-old man driving a gray 2009 Chevrolet Suburban hit a 16-year-old girl and a 32-year-old woman with his vehicle. The teenage victim, who police identified as Jhoanny Gomez Alvarez of Manhattan, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police officials said there was an altercation between Gomez Alvarez and the driver beforehand and that it appears she was targeted. The 32-year-old woman was transported to Elmhurst Hospital in stable condition, according to police.

The NYPD says the driver fled the scene in his vehicle and later struck a parked and unoccupied vehicle on the same street before being taken into custody.

The driver’s identity has not been released by the NYPD. Police said he was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in stable condition.
