Petty Thieves Brewing in Charlotte is sold. What we know about the deal

A Charlotte brewery with an eclectic style and a loyal following over the last half dozen years has a new owner.

Petty Thieves Brewing Co., located just outside of uptown at 413 Dalton Ave., was sold this month, brewery industry expert Aaron Gore confirmed Thursday.

Gore, a Fort Mill, S.C., resident and vice president of the American Craft Beer Hall of Fame, said he played a role in the sale helping the buyer, and has known the sellers for years.

Petty Thieves co-owner Ted Rosenau declined to confirm the sale or comment on Thursday when reached by The Charlotte Observer.

But late Thursday, the company sent a news release naming Brian Kletch as the new owner, saying the business will remain in operation without any closures or interruptions in production. Kletch has more than 20 years corporate experience.

“I wanted to take my business knowledge and love of people and employees in a new direction,” Kletch said in the news release.

Why the Petty Thieves owner sold the Charlotte brewery

Rosenau said in the statement that he decided to sell Petty Thieves for his “personal well-being due to the constant pressures of running a small business in a still-emerging area of Charlotte.”

The new owner, Gore said, is local and new to the industry. He intends to keep the brewery’s name and takes over at the beginning of March, Gore said.

He declined to disclose the sales price.

Petty Thieves Brewing debuted during the pandemic

Co-founded by Rosenau and Greg Calabria, Petty Thieves taproom opened nearly six years ago during the pandemic at The Shop, a renovated industrial building approximately a mile south of Camp North End.

The brewery is filled with thrifted finds, worn leather couches, reclaimed wood, vintage framed prints and other nods to Charlotte’s past. Concealed behind a rotating bookcase is a hidden room. In addition, the brewery also has an outdoor patio with a view of uptown Charlotte.

About Petty Thieves Brewing pints

Known for crafting a variety of German, Czech and West Coast-style beers, North Carolina Craft Brewers Guild called Petty Thieves Brewing a hidden gem.

“Outside, the shaded patio offers some of the city’s best skyline views, while inside you’ll find velvet chairs, a fireplace, and plenty of lounging zones to settle in with a pint that’s anything but ordinary,” the guild said in August on its Facebook page.
