WASHINGTON — Dame Patricia Routledge, the British actress known for her role as Hyacinth Bucket in the ’90s sitcom “Keeping Up Appearances,” has died. She was 96.
The statement said the beloved actress “died peacefully in her sleep this morning surrounded by love.”
Routledge began her work on stage at the Liverpool Playhouse in the early 1950s, transitioning to Broadway in the 60s. She won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 1968, for her role in Darling of the Day.
But she is most well known for her appearances on television. She appeared as Hetty Wainthropp in BBC1’s “Hetty Wainthropp Investigates” and in As Seen on TV to Talking Heads: A Lady of Letters.
Her biggest role came in the 90s sitcom “Keeping Up Appearances” where she played Hyacinth Bucket as a snobbish middle-class social climber for five seasons from 1990 to 1995.
“Even at 96 years old, Dame Patricia’s passion for her work and for connecting with live audiences never waned, just as new generations of audiences have continued to find her through her beloved television roles,” the statement from her agent said. “She will be dearly missed by those closest to her and by her devoted admirers around the world.”
She was appointed as Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2017 by Queen Elizabeth II for her work in entertainment. Being named a Dame is the female equivalent of being knighted as a Sir by a British monarch.
