The main trailer for No Other Choice, directed by acclaimed South Korean auteur Park Chan-wook, was released, confirming the film’s theatrical debut in South Korea on September 24, 2025. This black comedy thriller, adapted from Donald E. Westlake’s 1997 novel The Ax, stars Lee Byung-hun as Man-soo, a middle-aged office worker who spirals into desperation after being fired from his 25-year job at a paper company, and Son Ye-jin as his resilient wife, Mi-ri.
The film, which marks the first onscreen pairing of these Hallyu icons, will premiere at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on August 29, competing for the Golden Lion—the first Korean film in the main competition in 13 years since Kim Ki-duk’s Pieta—before opening the 30th Busan International Film Festival on September 17. Distributed by CJ ENM in South Korea, Neon in North America, and Mubi in multiple international territories, No Other Choice promises Park’s signature blend of psychological intensity, dark humor, and elegant visuals.
The main trailer, shared by outlets like SportsChosun and AsianWiki, sets a tense and ironic tone, opening with Man-soo’s nervous demeanor at a job interview. When detectives mention the disappearance of two rival applicants, his quip, “I’ll call you as soon as I disappear,” injects dark humor, while the line, “In the United States, they say getting fired is like ‘wielding the axe.’ In Korea? ‘You’re getting your neck cut,’” underscores his desperation.
Mi-ri, portrayed by Son Ye-jin, supports her husband with practical cost-cutting and encouragement—“You can do it”—but her joking remark, “Kill them all,” reverberates ominously, looping in Man-soo’s mind. The trailer’s tagline, “Four people, one position,” highlights his competitors—Beom-mo (Lee Sung-min), Si-jo (Cha Seung-won), and Seon-chul (Park Hee-soon)—as scenes of violence, including a clash with Beom-mo and his wife A-ra (Yeom Hye-ran), hint at Man-soo’s chilling plan to eliminate his rivals. A haunting moment shows him muttering, “No other choice,” while lighting a cigarette in the dark, foreshadowing a morally complex descent.
The star-studded cast, including Yoo Yeon-seok as Mi-ri’s dentist, enhances the film’s appeal, with Park’s longtime collaborators like Lee Kyoung-mi and Lee Ja-hye co-writing the screenplay alongside Don McKellar. Filming, which began in August 2024 and wrapped in January 2025 after 85 days, marks Park’s first feature since his 2022 Cannes Best Director-winning Decision to Leave.
At a Seoul press conference on August 19, Park described the film as “heartbreaking and hilarious,” while Son Ye-jin praised her chemistry with Lee Byung-hun, saying, “We matched so well on set that it felt like the scenes ended too quickly.” Lee echoed, “She performed with such detail, even more than I imagined for Mi-ri.” Netizens on X are buzzing, with comments like “The direction and color palette are insane” and “This is epic,” reflecting high anticipation for Park’s meticulous storytelling and the film’s gripping narrative.
As Park’s third Venice entry after Three… Extremes (2004) and Lady Vengeance (2005), No Other Choice is a passion project he’s nurtured for over a decade, initially inspired by Westlake’s novel before learning of Costa-Gavras’ 2005 adaptation, Le Couperet.
